Don't Shoot the Messenger...Latest Rumors...

Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/4/2015 8:30 pm
- JPP deal is getting messy over guaranteed money, but there is a chance a new long-term deal will be done before Monday.

- Jon Beason's contract re-structuring is done.

- Giants will invite safety Devin McCourty (Patriots) and Rahim Moore (Broncos) to visit. McCourty is 1a and Moore 1b.

- The interest in Ndamukong Suh is smoke.

is pointless, but it sure would be fun to blast away at the slew of morons frequenting these threads this time of year.

Would love to see McCourty here.

I wonder if JPP signed the "tag" contract yet? Or if his agent is shopping him?
its so easy to point out drafting blunders
UConn4523 : 3/5/2015 12:41 pm : link
a monkey can do it. Its lazy and doesn't require anything other than looking up a name and remembering if he did anything for the team or not. Then you point at JR and feel superior, yadda yadda yadda.

I by no means excuse poor drafts, but i'm not ignorant enough to finger point when I know no more than the next fan about who would have worked out for us and who wouldn't. Too many factors (health, bad coaching, lack of luck, etc).

of this place was thrilled or accepting when they were drafted because we believed in our mock drafts, observations, watching them in college they were going to be good players, I guess Reese did also that's why he drafted them. Now a few years later, no one wants to claim ownership around here for loving or liking the picks when they were made and throw Reese under the bus and distance themselves and never acknowledging how happy they were when those guys were drafted.

That makes 0 sense to me. This is the first back up QB since Warner that has looked half decent running the offense (even if only preseason). In fact he had a better preseason than Eli did. Also Eli though a model of durability is 34. I would be pretty unhappy to give up a solid insurance policy for the most important position on the team especially for just a 3rd.
Chances are quite strong
JonC : 3/5/2015 2:15 pm : link
that if Eli is lost for an extended period of time, the team will struggle. The regime might have their eye on an upgrade with the pick in return, or a player that might quickly become a starter.

They can sign an equitable backup QB.

You get a 3rd for Nassib, you run to the phone to accept. I don't see anyone offering a 3rd however...
Trading Nassib

makes sense if the Giants plan to extend Eli.

Matt M. : 3/5/2015 2:21 pm : link
it depends on the rest of your off season and cap space. Do you think you will get a decent backup cheaper than Nassib? I don't think you want a rookie as your primary backup, so that leaves you with needing to still fill that slot with a veteran. is a 3rd round pick going to make up for that?

of course, I never thought they would get more than that for Nassib under any circumstances, so i always thought the calls to trade him were moot and pure fantasy.
Teams do crazy stuff
pjcas18 : 3/5/2015 2:22 pm : link
at the QB position.

AJ Feeley turned a 75 QB rating into a 2nd round pick.

Matt Schaub cost 2 2nd round picks

Kevin Kolb yielded DRC and a 2nd round pick

Matt Cassel (and Vrabel) yielded the 34th pick in the draft

and there are a lot more...

Granted Nassib hasn't played a meaningful down in an actual NFL game, but a 3rd might be realistic given the stupidity around the QB position
I refuse to believe this Nassib rumor until

Thomasarea junc confirms it.
We all have our own opinions
Coach Mason : 3/5/2015 2:23 pm : link
But I really liked what I saw out of Nassib last year. Giants also spent a 4th to get him. So Giants would only be netting a 1 round 'value' for him while investing a few years of developing him. Now if there is some 'sleeper' QB they are in love with perhaps it makes some sense but otherwise I'd prefer to hold on to Nassib.

Yes, a 3rd round pick will make up for that. If Eli gets hurt, Nassib isn't going to save the season. I'd rather have the extra 3rd rounder.

All of those came after brief periods of success that the other team was hoping to cash in on. Nassib's only claim to fame is having a good camp this past summer. I can't see any team trading enough to make it worthwhile. For a team to do that, they have to be willing to at least consider having him vie for a starting spot. Is any team crazy enough to do that?
Nassib quite likely never sees the field for NYG

I'd heard they were shopping him for a #2, perhaps a #3 is the trigger.

Don't know, that's why it's not a 2nd round pick though like (at least) in all the examples I provided.

It's not so much about saving the season as it is not losing the season. The real answer to that is not simple because other factors would be in play? How log would Eli be out? Where are the Giants in the standings? How does the team look overall. Etc.

If some of these loons were correct and the Giants were offered a #2, i would agree you jump on it. A #3 is still worth consideration, but not a slam dunk, in my opinion.
Every name on that list 95% ...
Torrag : 3/5/2015 2:36 pm : link
Fans are supposed to get excited when our team drafts a player. Why? Because we have an expectation they will contribute to our success. The professionals employed by our owners hand picked them from the available prospects. The idea we can't criticize or be disappointed with our recent draft success is just plain dumb. The owner recently did so himself...publicly. It isn't a secret.
If the Giants
Metnut : 3/5/2015 2:38 pm : link
start out, say 6-3, and Eli has a 4-6 week injury, we'd all be pretty to have kept Nassib. I'm not saying that rolling the dice and taking a 3rd rounder is a bad idea, but there's a good case to be made for keeping him too.
Metnut
Matt M. : 3/5/2015 2:41 pm : link
I think you make the same argument that taking the 3rd rounder and getting a veteran backup might be the better option in that scenario. My problem with that scenario is that there aren't really any high quality veterans to fit the bill and any they could get would cost them. so, I have no problem standing pat with Nassib.

Jon, was wondering if you could elaborate a bit more. I had not heard that. I would love to believe it as this is the year to shop a young QB. The Vikings just got a 5th and a 7th for Matt Cassel. Would think the Giants could get better for Nassib.

Sure did. As unbelievable as that may seem.
we gave up a 6th
UConn4523 : 3/5/2015 5:29 pm : link
don't see what the big deal is. a 4th and 6th round pick is worth getting a solid, cheap backup QB that has an outside chance of being more than that at some point if we ever needed him to be. If he never plays a down here its still worth it (and its what we should all want).

JonC : 3/5/2015 5:40 pm : link
I'd heard a couple times they were open to moving Nassib for a #2. A compromise on a #3 would be more likely, and I'm speculating perhaps that's enough to trigger NYG to make the deal, but nothing to back that up from the rumor mill other than what Eric was told.

Problem with that is I can't see anyone offering us a #2 for Nassib.
arcarsenal : 3/5/2015 5:44 pm : link
Why would they? 2 years ago, every team in the league had 3 (and some had 4) chances to take him and passed. No team in the league thought he was worth a 2nd or 3rd rounder at the time of the draft and he hasn't taken a snap in a regular season game so I can't see how his stock could possibly have elevated at all.

I think he has more value to NYG as a backup with potential for now. Obviously I'd take a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him in a heartbeat but I feel like his actual value in a trade is a fair amount lower than that at this point or at least I'd assume so.
yeah I mean
UConn4523 : 3/5/2015 5:45 pm : link
sign me up for a 2. I'd live with a 3, but I don't see any team doing that either unless its unexpected desperation.

I'd agree there's not enough film on him for a team to leap to trade premium pick for him, but teams do get desperate in the NFL at times, especially for QBs. Stranger things have happened.

I wouldn't move him for a #4 or lower, at that point I'd agree his value as the backup and trying to build him for future trade talks would make more sense to me.
Why wouldn't shopping Nassib make sense?
pjcas18 : 3/5/2015 5:56 pm : link
especially IF the Giants plan to extend Eli.

In 2015 Nassib is in his 3rd year of a 4 year deal, so once he enters year 4, he'd have less value IMO, because the Giants are not likely to extend Eli AND give Nassib a 2nd contract nor would he probably want a 2nd contract as a backup. So he's likely to hit free agency.

You'd think he'd at least want an opportunity to compete for a starters job so if Eli is extended it means again IMO, that Nassib's gone after year 4 of his deal.

If the Giants recoup a 3rd round pick for him it would be trading a 4th and a 6th for a 3rd in two years. probably a fair deal.

Fantasy Football.
Klaatu : 3/5/2015 5:57 pm : link
Giants trade Nassib for a 3. Then they sign Mark Sanchez to back up Eli. Eli goes down late in the season. Sanchez leads the Giants to a Super Bowl victory a la Jeff Hostetler. Jet fans commit mass suicide.

Yeah, I would be shocked too if he nets a 3rd round pick.

But like I posted earlier there is a lot of stupidity in the NFL around the QB position and a lot of stupid teams. Combine those two and Nassib can possibly get a 3rd.

The guy I had my eye on as a parallel to how the Giants would handle Nassib was Ryan Mallett and the Pats and I hoped the Pats got a high round pick for Mallett, but in the end I think all he got the Pats was a 7th. And Mallett was the classic "first round talent in the third round" cliche. I guess not. And that does not bode well for Nassib. He really just needed a meaningless game with a great performance and it could have benefitted the Giants.

Could happen closer to the draft
Phil in LA : 3/5/2015 6:15 pm : link
and depend on how teams feel about this year's class. The concern would be that they would trade the "extra pick" to move up in a flat draft.
Nassib stays
SGMen : 3/5/2015 6:47 pm : link
He knows the offense. Eli can always get hurt - God forbid! Nassib, let's say he starts two games and excels his value skyrockets. Remember, the Giants have playmakers.
Or it could be a chance to get another pick in the meat of this draft
