Bartolo Colon at Max Sherzer!
This might be an opening day preview! I'll be at the game even though NO position starters will be there. lol. I'll try to give a summary tonight sometime to let everyone know what I see. Let's Go Mets!
(Lineups to follow)
To me that's the perfect storm. Flores gets plunked on the wrist, swing gets messed up, performance suffers, Tejada starts the season at SS and Flores never gets going.

He's fine. But I share your concern lol

Collins (per Rubin) said he was fine and hit in the glove hand and could possibly have been able to play today. If we don't see him play this weekend, then I'd be concerned.
Yeah but scheduled to travel is usually decided beforehand. I wouldn't read anything into it.
Funny, remember all that hate when he was drafted...

Shows how much you can listen to Collins though. He said Flores will play tomorrow (today) and is fine. Yet he wasn't listed on the other thread as a players r traveling...

Yes, but I'd still read into it.

positive buzz on Milton Ramos right now. Gonna have to hit a bit but maybe he's a poor mans Simmons?

Wasnt he supposed to be an all glove no hit player?
Your not high on Edgin? He was great last year. I know we need to see more, but he definitely seemed to have matured last year.
Edgin. Sure I like what he did last year. But am I 100% convinced he is a mainstay? He is like Faa,ilia was going into last year for me. Could blossom, but wouldn't be shocked to see him in AAA by year end either. Other than being lefty, would you consider. edgin a lock to make the 25 if he threw righty?
Also what Gilmartin does during spring training doesn't really mean much. At the major league level he's pretty much going to be an exclusive LOOGY as he has a history of outstanding splits against them. In spring training however, everyone is trying to get work in, and he likely pitches entire innings. It's not going to be all that surprising if a few right-handed bats smack him around a bit.

Shecky,
I dunno I actually saw quite a few people calling him the best defensive infielder in the draft and that it was a good pick. The Eudor Garcia pick was one a lot of people shit on.

I don't really get the point of that argument. He was devastating against lefties last year which is what we need. He also was pretty good against righties which is why I see Edgin as more than a LOOGY eventually. He's young, he throws pretty hard(for lefty standards). There's a lot to like.

Don't know anything about placement. But I jusst find it funny that Ramos is getting so much buzz, but no one liked the pick. Not like he showed anything special or wowed anyone at GCL last year. Reyes probably played as much at SS as Ramos did there.

Selective memory last season, Edgin gave up the go ahead homer to a light hitting Chris Coghlan after a great Wheeler start. One month later, he gave up a grand slam to Chase utley in a 6-0 loss. It was Hamels versus Gee, so that slam just sealed the game at that time.
Outside those appearances, he gave up only 4ER (2 of the via homerun) all season long, his FIP, K/9, BB/9, and his other peripherals are outstanding. He can definitely be the top LOOGY coming out of any bullpen.

Can Matt Reynolds play a mediocre defensive SS? I like his tools and wonder if he's a better option than Wilmer Flores.
Klaw
(10:43 AM)
He could be a fringe-average defensive shortstop, maybe even average. But when you say you "like his tools," what tools do you mean? He's a mediocre hitter without power, so I don't know how much offense you'll get.
Speaking of, as expected Flores did not ride the bus today apparently.

Shecky,
Pretty positive he's saying that about Reynolds.
9th from last in attendance = 9th from last in payroll
Can't wait to the fan reactions of "we promised we would raise payroll if the fans came. Attendance is up 20%, and so is our payroll, near $100mm now"
I haven't been much of a Reynolds fan. Obviously you can't ignore last season that he had. But very, very impressed by the kid so far this spring. He would have been the talk of camp except a few guys stole his thunder. Harvey live pitching while Reynolds was hitting line drive after line drive on the field next to him. Against Matz. Yet not one person of importance in I the media noticed it. Could have been a lucky day, but very hard line drives.
Never wish injuries on anyone, but this is the exact type of news the Mets want to hear more and more of.
Really doubt they are taking Colon at 11 million if Darvish has a major injury. Their season would basically be shot. He's their ace on an already thin staff.
Mike Minor to see Andrews jeez.

You sure Dan? Didn't Rice pitch yesterday??

by an eagle eyed person on NYFS, Black and Rice aren't listed as scheduled to pitch through Monday. Something to note.
You sure Dan? Didn't Rice pitch yesterday??
Nope. Was scheduled to but didn't pitch. Most just thought it was because "not enough innings" but now he's not scheduled through Monday? Seems odd.
And black has thrown, so don't worry there either.

Just seems odd to not be listed as a scheduled pitcher
Dear Mr. Murphy,
As a gay man, life-long Mets fan, and father of a budding Mets fan, I feel compelled to reach out to you, as you have certainly reached me with your feelings regarding my family.
To me, you are a great baseball player who has demonstrated commitment and determination when faced with adversity. I have followed you in your quest to become an All-Star second baseman and truly admire what you have accomplished.
To my son, you are more — you are a role model. I understand that may not have been something you signed up for, but for better or worse, for him and others like him, you are larger than life.
Let me try to explain why what you said was not an innocuous sound byte, but rather an offensive statement. First, I do not have a lifestyle. I didn’t choose my sexuality the same way you didn’t choose yours. Second, being gay is not what defines me, but rather it is just one important part of who I am. So when you say that you disagree with who I am, you are also disagreeing with my son and my family. We are not a lifestyle choice — we are a family.
Even though I am extremely disappointed and hurt by your remarks, I am grateful that you spoke your mind, as it has started a national conversation. The discussions taking place today on social media, in bars and churches, and around the dining room table are exactly how GLBT progress is achieved.
I know it is hard moving to an unfamiliar position (think about your transition to second base), but with faith, openness and commitment, positive change can truly happen.
Some wonder how the gay rights movement has progressed so well so fast. To me it is quite simple: once you recognize that your brother, son, neighbor, or co-worker is gay, you don’t just continue to “love him” but you learn to actually accept and respect him for who he is as a person — and that changes everything.
So Mr. Murphy, thank you for starting a very important dialogue. My son and I will be travelling out from San Francisco to root on our Mets this weekend in Port St. Lucie. If you are around we would love to meet you and continue the conversation in person.
Thank you for your time.
All the best,
Jon and Sammy

Keep in mind these are only my opinions and observations from where I was sitting and what I saw so with that....
Bartolo Colon was a magician for the first two innings. I don't know how he does is but the Nationals were swinging out of their shoes and he simply was toying with them and he knew it. He especially made Ramos and Desmond look foolish in the second.
Mayberry looks huge and CRUSHED a homerun off Sherzer in the second inning. Might have been my vantage point but it looked like the ball wasn't even coming down yet when it went over the LF wall.
Puello does not look chubby, or big, or out of shape, or anything like that. I know there has been a couple closeup pictures of him post pump or something like that but he almost looks lanky. At least in my opinion. He was very fast in the outfield and on the bases. Seriously not being partial, asked everyone around me(all Mets fans) how they thought Puello looked, and he almost looked skinny/athletic if thats such a thing. Again, it could have been my vantage point but he looked in really good shape.
Robles came in and was real shaky initially but was able to get himself out of trouble.
Campbell looked really good. Maybe just my imagination but he seemed like he was a man playing with boys. Just his body language and how he was calling for balls around the infield and the way he carried himself. Of course he also crushed a two run homerun off Roark.
The biggest take-away with both Cambell and Puello is that most of the starters came out around the fourth and fifth inning and Puello and Cambell did not. Campbell shifted from first to third which of course is telling but more interesting to me, Mayberry, MDD, ect were replaced early and Puello was left out in RF for an extended look. Its super early, but that tells me they do indeed want to see what they have in the kid for now.
Ynoa came in on fire. Struck out his first two batters and made Harper look foolish(keep in mind in the 4th inning Robles and Ynoa were still going against the Nats A++ lineup) For some reason on his third batter he started nibbling and throwing off speed stuff low and in the dirt. He had a lot of tough pitches fouled off and I think it rattled him. He let up a few hits and at least a run before Edgin came in and cleaned up the mess.
Edgin came in for another whole inning and allowed a hit but looked good overall.
At this point I decided to get up and head over to the Mets bullpen on the other side. At Spacecost you can walk right up to the cage and talk to the pitchers. Cory Mazzoni was warming up and nobody seemed to know who he was. I asked him how he was feeling and he said "Great". I asked him if wanted to start or relieve this year and he just grinned. I got some really close up pictures Ill try to post tomorrow. Mozzoni was throwing HARD. The catchers mitt was cracking unlike any other pitcher that threw tonight. Im pretty sure when he went in the game he relied on it too much and the Nats teed off. I watched Bradford throw for a little too and wasn't overly impressed. When I first walked over Satterwhite was there too.
Around the 6th or 7th I went right to the Mets dugout on the first row right behind home base. I would consider these the two best seats in the stadium if it were possible to pick. Its a very relaxed atmosphere and people are walking around and hanging out at the tiki area or the grassy areas so security doesn't check your seats and many seats opened up. I sat about 2 feet from the Mets actual dugout and was able to watch Herrera and Nimmo right in front of me as they took practice swings.
Nimmo looks awesome. He didn't do much except hit a bunch of balls really really hard foul but he doesn't look like the same player Ive seen in years past. He looks stronger and bigger.
All in all, it was a great game. I especially liked that our "B players" smacked around Sherzer and Roark and Colon blanked their "A players". It was a beautiful night and I got some really nice closeups Ill try to share.
Ill be at another game in a couple weeks and will share more when Im there.
