Safety depth in FA/Draft

Dunedin81 : 3/5/2015 11:48 am
I saw a Tweet from Jordan Ranaan on the subject so I figured it was worth a discussion (it's a quasi-snow day anyway).

In the draft only a handful of prospects have even Day 2 grades, and in FA it's McCourty, Rolle, Will Hill and not much else. A very thin market on both fronts.

To what extent might this drive up the asking price for even a past-prime Rolle or the draft position of Landon Collins?
I don't know what the right answer is or will be

But I'm very uncomfortable with our Safety situation.
I don't think its a thin market in FA

there's McCourty, Moore, Gilchrist, Parker and Delmas. I'm probably missing some too.
You forgot Rahim Moore

But it is a thin group. The Giants only need one so we just have to hope they've got what it takes. McCourty is a Jersey guy at least. Don't think it affects the draft so much. You don't reach just because there aren't enough players at apposition unless you're a bad drafting team. Could certainly affect FA prices though.
I'd love Moore

Agreed. I actually think its relatively deep with mid level talent.

Searcy from Buffalo is a solid prospect

I also like Parker from KC

I have seen Eskridge from Syracuse on a few occasions. Good down hill attacker who is good in coverage when need be and is very physical and involved against the run. Probably better in box safety but has good instincts for the position. Would be happy to get him in rounds 4 to 5 but might have to be earlier with the dearth of good players at this position this year. I believe he is better than Shamarko Thomas taken in the 4th round I believe last year by the Steelers. I wanted us to take him but I believe Eskridge has a higher ceiling. Fingers crossed.
There are some corners in the draft

who would make good free safeties.
I think there are about 30 UFA Safeties.
Klaatu : 3/5/2015 12:12 pm : link
Sure, not all of them are starting-caliber (some are old, like George Wilson, or dealing with injuries, like Chris Conte, or just plain suck, like Taylor Mays), but around 8-10 would be clear upgrades over what we have now, which isn't saying very much.

I figure the Giants will make a push to sign one of the top-tier UFAs - McCourty and Moore have been mentioned as potential targets by Eric - and, possibly, a lower-tier guy as well (maybe even re-signing one of our own, like Stevie Brown).

In the draft, it's anybody's guess at this point. The Giants may have their eyes on a good prospect in the 2nd or 3rd round, or they may wait until Day 3 and take a flyer on a guy like the kid from Syracuse, Eskridge.
Giants showed a willingness to spend

Big at FS with Rolle. One of the highest avg yearly contracts for an outside FA.

Now with Rolle not likely back perhaps they want another top S back there so they don't miss a beat. Especially if they envision more pressure packages in Stevie's Giants D 2.0
here's Cosell on the FA safeties

Ira: Good point about CB--> S conversion projects.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/5/2015 12:36 pm : link
I think we already have one in Bennett Jackson. Don't know how he's currently viewed in the organization.
I think the CB to S conversions are a fair point...

but some of these "mid-level guys" just aren't very good at this point. They're guys who have had success in the past, or that many of us liked in the draft (I really liked Chung and Delmas), but who have been relatively disappointing of late.
Herb Welch and Kenny Hill

Focus on the front seven please.
Is it even a possibility
Simms11 : 3/5/2015 1:05 pm : link
that Landon Collins lasts till the Giants second round pick at 40? He would be a great addition to the back end, however, he is nothing more then a very good looking SS. Not sold on Stevie Brown either. He seems to be a step slow and no help as a safety. Giants need at least two more safeties and competition between Berhe and Taylor for # 3 and 4 safety, since the Giants usually carry 4.

Would Spags play the three-safety look like Fewell? If so, the Giants probably need 3 more safeties, if Rolle not resigned.
Use the FA market

to fill immediate need. In my opinion Searcy is their best play .
Gilchrist

is someone I think we should really focus on. I think he could present some value.
there's some decent talent available.
RAIN : 3/5/2015 2:18 pm : link
both in talent and quality. McCourty and a draft pick would be ideal.
