Pass Rush Prospects

SirYesSir : 3/5/2015 1:03 pm
I know there's been a lot of discussion on this group, but just looking for a consensus of opinion.

When the Giants pick at 9, all these names won't be available, but it's likely 2 or 3 will. Rate this group from top to bottom, or at least give the top 3 you would hope would be available from this group. (*please don't say none, I want Cooper or something, let's just pretend the giants go rusher here...)

Vic Beasley - Clemson
Bud Dupree - Kentucky
Dante Fowler Jr. - Florida
Randy Gregory - Nebraska
Shane Ray - Missouri

Assuming Fowler is gone

I like Beasley and Ray. Only tweeners I would consider
Beasley, Gregory, Fowler, Ray

I don't think Dupree has first round value. Someone will draft him there, but I think he'll disappoint.
Fowler, Beasley, Gregory, & Ray

Would not be interested in Dupree at 9.

1. Dante Fowler, Jr., Florida
2. Shane Ray, Missouri
3. Vic Beasley, Clemson
4. Randy Gregory, Nebraska
5. Bud Dupree, Kentucky

or so says Mike Mayock
Beasley

He's a clean player that does what it takes, gives maximum effort and his coaches love him. He really impressed me in how he put on the good weight without sacrificing speed and quickness. What I like about him more than the rest is that I think he could play 4-3 OLB like Anthony Barr and Von Miller and still be effective.

Ray has an explosive first step and speed but I think he's a pass rusher only. I don't see him being as successful dropping into coverage.

Fowler, Gregory and Dupree have major bust factors written all over them imo and personally I'd pass.
My personal list would be
Lionhart28 : 3/5/2015 1:47 pm : link
1) Gregory
2) Ray
3) Fowler
I like Beasley most of all of them...

I haven't seen Ray all that much, or Gregory. Fowler probably goes before us but if not I'd be fine with that. Dupree's a difficult sell at 9, if they're convinced that there is more there so be it and he's plenty athletic but he just hasn't done that much. Beasley has been an impact player for a couple years, just jumping off the tape, and in shorts at Indy you saw why. Otherworldly athleticism. Now there's no guarantee he can match up with athletic tackles 80 lbs heavier than him, or that he'd have an easy adjustment to playing in space. But the upside is huge.
Can Beasley

be a WLB in a 4-3 or is he a going to be a SAM. Personally I think he is athletic enough to play WLB.
If Spags is ready and willing to use a player

in the Von Miller mold, I would jump at Beasley. The guy has the "it" factor. But I just seem them liking the length of a dude like Gregory.
The problem is

none of the round 1 guys that will be available are really 4-3 type pass rushers. Fowler is the biggest, and even he isn't. The round 1 guys are all OLB-sized and project to 3-4 OLBs at the NFL level. None of the round 1 guys are the size of the guys the Giants like. Go compare their heights and weights to JPP, Osi, and Tuck and you'll see what I mean.

6'3"-6'4" and 270 lbs, give or take, is pretty much the standard. If you're longer or heavier and can still move great, but that's pretty normal for a 4-3 end and Fowler is close to it, 261 and has played in the 270's. Dupree is 6'4" and 269.
Beasley is my first choice

But Gregory looks like Aundray Bruce, Part II. have no interest in him. After Beasley Fowler and Ray look like players. I would play Ray at DE in a NASCAR package.
