What would be a disappointing off-season for you?

CMicks3110 : 3/5/2015 2:40 pm
Free Agency begins next week, and the draft is not too far away either. What would you consider a disappointing off-season? Not signing JPP long, not resigning Eli or Prince; only getting maybe a 2nd tier safety and an average o-lineman, spending our top pick on someone like Peat or Ray?
not reaching a deal with JPP

and not signing any impact trench players in FA. Forcing us to reach for Dupree/Armstead at #9.
We need to stay away from guys with an injury 'rap sheet'...
Torrag : 3/5/2015 2:55 pm : link
...unless they come dirt cheap. We've been burned too many times and JR doesn't appear to learn his lesson.

the ST & OL coaches. Bringing back Stevie Brown. JPP leaving.

post pertains to FA. Then focus on BPA at #9.
Unless they have a plan to replace JPP

I'll be irritated if they don't re-sign him, sign a FA RT, and find an edge defender starter who can make an impact opposite JPP.

Sign at least one quality S.

No upgrade at TE

would be disappointing. I don't believe Donnell is the answer. I would also like Thurmond back. Eli extension is important as well. Finding a safety.

After that pray to the injury god for no more injuries.

You better toss in the towel, then - at this point, they are most certainly not making a change with Quinn and Flaherty...
failing to quadruple down on the defensive

trenches in every conceivable way, even if we get additional talent and upside on O.

that would not be much fun as a giants / NFC East / old school type football fan
Re-signing

most of our own FAs, and, repeating our 'sign as many cheap players as possible and HOPE' FA philosophy from last year.
They need..
Chris684 : 3/5/2015 3:39 pm : link
to solidify LG and RT.

Pugh is the answer at one of those spots so they need to find the other.

I have been hoping they'll be more aggressive in FA than they've been in the past, mainly b/c I don't love how the prospects fit their needs at #9.

I have been hoping for one of Suh, Iupati, Franklin or Cobb. I'd be happy with Sheard or McCourty as well.

I'd count our needs as follows:

1 starter along the OL
1 starter at S
1 rotational DE
1 WR
1 starter at LB
1 blocking TE
1 RB

I'd like to see more competition brought in for LB, CB and S.

I would expand on that. I agree we need to sign 1 FA to start on the OL. We likely need another vet for depth. But, on D, I think we need to sign more than 1 impact starter. The way I see it, we need 2-3 between DL, LB, and S. That is all before we even get to the draft.
With 84 million available next year, not going
Coach Mason : 3/5/2015 3:45 pm : link
For it and at least trying hard for Suh.

Elite defensive gamechangers like Reggie White, Deion Sanders and Revis were all worth their gargantuan contracts as they helped bring their new teams Super Bowls. I think Suh is in that class, and we need to take a serious run at him.

With Suh in thd fold I'd gladly take the mid level guys at S and OL with guys like Moore or Searcy and Newton, Boling or maybe even Byron Bell.

Some value guys at some other spots like LB , a good draft and then go to war next year on defense featuring a ferocious DL that rivals 2011, Prince, DRC and a mid level safety as the core.
Huge disappointment if
mrvax : 3/5/2015 3:47 pm : link
they did not sign a real good FA run blocking guard or tackle/guard.
Matt
Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/5/2015 3:48 pm : link
it's unlikely that the Giants or any other team can sign more than one "impact" starter.
Eric
Matt M. : 3/5/2015 3:49 pm : link
If they don't sign 2 on D, I can't see this team being very good. Right now, they have no starter at S, 2 on the DL, and maybe 2 at LB. They aren't filling those holes plus depth, plus OL, TE, etc. via the draft. They need at least 2 quality starters on D.
Eric
Matt M. : 3/5/2015 3:53 pm : link
Also, i recognize I may have overshot with impact, but we need, realistically, 3 legit starters in D via FA.
We won't really know
phil in arizona : 3/5/2015 3:57 pm : link
until the season. We could sign every big ticket guy, but that doesn't necessarily translate to production.

We need to nail this draft and get SOME productivity out of free agency. We need a few "Fred Robbins" kind of signings.
What would disappoint me
Emil : 3/5/2015 3:58 pm : link
1. Not fixing the OL by bringing in at least one new starter
2. Not investing in the DL

well said. I would add drafting a player that doesn't fit our style of play or panicing and drafting a player not worthy of the slot.

Matt M. : 3/5/2015 4:03 pm : link
I agree. When i say legit starters, I don't necessarily mean well established veterans. Between age and cost and diminishing returns. we can't go that route too often. We need to pluck some of the diamonds in the rough coming off their first or second contract (depending on the length of them). In other words, we need to sign the 25-27 year old players.
Not resolving JPP contract
Watson : 3/5/2015 4:18 pm : link
Not signing a starting quality FS, and a LOG or ROT.
Agree with many
NYG07 : 3/5/2015 4:23 pm : link
Not reaching a long term deal with JPP would really hurt. Reese can free up at least another 5 mil in cap space this year if JPP signs.

I will also be dissapointed if the Giants do not sign an impact free agent safety. The Giants need a new starter via free agency so they are not forced to draft one in the 1st or 2nd round due to a weak draft class.

Looks like it'll be a disappointing offseason for you. Thurmond likely gone, and the team believes in Donnell.
I feel like we're going to miss the target
#10* : 3/5/2015 4:26 pm : link
I think they'll bring in a few guys they like but I think this off-season will be a missed opportunity to leap frog some great teams and become a dominant player in the NFC not just the East.

If Jerry wants to be great this is the off-season to do it.
Not sure
Mike in Boston : 3/5/2015 4:56 pm : link
Why anyone thinks long term deals for Prince, JPP or Eli are urgent. They can be done in the season or next year too. Yes we can get some cap room for this year, but we will pay for it next year or the year after. We need at least 1 solid OL, preferably 2, and one or two impact players on D. Everything else is gravy.
The 53 on Labor Day looks like shit.

if
NYG4246 : 3/7/2015 7:44 am : link
they dont put serious stok into fixing the O-Line, at least 1 of the first 2 draft picks and several free agents
Letting Rolle go
Great White Ghost : 3/7/2015 3:23 pm : link
then missing out on McCourty would qualify as disappointing to me.
What Eric said
illmatic : 3/7/2015 3:28 pm : link
Need to upgrade at least one position on both sides of the ball in free agency. They have the cap space to make it happen so it would be really disappointing if they couldn't do it. Not being able to work something out with JPP long term would be kind of disappointing too.
