Vic Beasley Shows off LB Skills At Pro-Day

Emil : 3/5/2015 8:18 pm
Anyone know if the Giants were in attendance?

"Beasley wants to prove he belongs in games for more than just third-and-long."

"I felt like I've elevated my level as a linebacker," he said.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Beasley held his own in drills with two of the Tigers starting linebackers from last fall in Stephone Anthony and Tony Steward.

"That just shows you the kind of guy Vic is," Swinney said. "He looked pretty good and didn't have any issues at all out there in linebacker drills with two very polished guys."

So Bill Bellichick, Rex Ryan, and Chip Kelly were all there. Definitely some major buzz around this guy since the combine. If the Giants were to take a flier on a "tweener" this would be the guy. He is strong, fast, instinctive, and can put on a few more lbs if needed. I like the idea of drafting him, technically as a LB, playing him on the weak side, and having him put his hand in the dirt on 3rd down. A four aces/nascar package of a Beasley, Moore, Kennard, and JPP sounds potentially devastating to me.

If he weighed 255lbs I think the Giants would run to the podium if he was there at #9. At 246, he might be close enough. This defense needs playmakers and a guy like Beasley helps fill two positions and is an impact player at both.

I go back and forth over who should be on the short list a #9, but for me, Beasley is certainly on it.

I love this kid

He would do for our defense what OBJ does for our offense. The kids is explosive, has proven track record against top competition, lit up the combine.

I can see him wearing number 55 and becoming a fan favorite. God please let him be there at 9 and God please have Reese select him.

on Reese and drafting of LBs. And you know better than this, too, Emil..

Moore? Not ready to be annointed anything.

Agree that we should strongly consider Beasley, but if you had to chose between Beasley and Cooper, who would you take? This could actually be the scenario we are faced with.

Additionally, I think he would add such athleticism to the LB corps. Something we've been lacking there in the middle of the D. I do not see him as a 4-3 DE. I see him as more of a Von Miller type of player.
If Giants see him as one of those rare do-it-all LBs
Coach Mason : 3/5/2015 8:36 pm : link
that can both blitz off the edge on pass downs and also play adequately LB, not look lost in space and be able to occasionally turn the hips and cover a TE/RB, he could be in the mix.

He does seem like a special talent.
I definitely like him more than Fowler

even with the fit question marks.
I think
Bones : 3/5/2015 8:39 pm : link
Reese is more receptive to drafting a LB earlier because of the success the D had when a healthy Beason was in there. Clemson does not appear to be one of the Giants favorite colleges however.

I know I know, I feel so ashamed.

Going against my better instincts here, but this defense needs help and he seems like an impact player to me.

Whatever JonC is going to say, I know I will agree with. I'm just ignoring it tonight and dreaming.

If Cooper's gone, I would be very happy to have Beasley. Everything I've read, says the guy can just flat out play. I think OP hit the important points.

Very tough call, I like both players. Cooper to me is a can't miss talent and at the end of the day, would probably be my higher rated player.

I'm with you Dave
Bill Bellichick, Rex Ryan, and Chip Kelly?
TheShade : 3/5/2015 9:01 pm : link
All 3 of them are there but none of them will be in position to get Vic Beasley. Rex doesn't have a 1st rounder, Bill is at #32 and doubtful to trade up, and Chip wants his QB he recruited from Oregon.
You can't use the Giants don't draft LB
NoGainDayne : 3/5/2015 9:02 pm : link
Rule with him. He is a pass rusher and "you can never have too many pass rushers" a guy who had a faster 3 cone than Melvin Gordon and Kevin White. (Just a hair behind both in the short shuttle) Not to mention production that makes fowler look like an amateur. IF he makes it to the Giants that's who they should take. Period. (Ok maybe Leonard Williams but he definitely won't be there)
I like Vic Beasley
Semipro Lineman : 3/5/2015 9:05 pm : link
but I wonder if people here are going to be patient enough to live with his rookie linebacker growing pains since he has such limited experience there? I hope so
I dont think he will reach 9
blueblood : 3/5/2015 9:09 pm : link
so im not even focusing on him too much..
I want him
geemanfan : 3/5/2015 9:31 pm : link
But I can see him going to the Falcons right before we pick.

Falcons or Chicago...
My question would be: Can he play,
ColHowPepper : 3/5/2015 9:40 pm : link
and more importantly, stop, the run while taking on pulling guards and tackles on straight-ahead blocks in the scrum of bodies of NFL size and talent? Or is he, as described here, strictly a pass rusher from the outside and, therefore, easy to scheme? Is he too slight, too light? Another draft pundit said he had trouble in space on WRs.

Is he one-dimensional?

Yeah unfortunately I don't think he makes it past ATL. He looked great on tape pre-combine and his great pass rush skills really worked against him in that, why wouldn't you send him after the QB every down?

That being said he weighed in 11 pounds more than I expected crushed the bench press and demonstrated the speed, quickness and fluidity that he can pick up the LB position. I didn't really like him at all @ 9 pre-combine. It's a shame. He showed the athleticism to be a top 5 pick.

I could also see him going to the Raiders or the Jets. He has to be especially intriguing to the Raiders opposite Khalil Mack, we all know how they feel about athletes. Not a pass rush duo i'd like to be facing for the next 10+ years.
I'm tell you
Rjanyg : 3/5/2015 10:32 pm : link
We need front 7 elite talent and he possesses it. His quickness and speed are the makings of a playmaker.
Shane Ray's gets his chance March 19th
Torrag : 3/6/2015 1:12 am : link
His workout could rival Beasley's.
Still think Dupree is more what the Giants are looking for at pick 9,
BlueLou : 3/6/2015 1:25 am : link
with his size, length, and athleticism. His sack and TFL stats look good, but in fact were very toned down by what Kentucky asked him to do - often dropping him in coverage. Line him up at DE consistently and cut him lose to rush the passer, at least on obvious passing downs, and IMO he'll be a beast at the NFL level in a year or three...

Beasley actually started only 1 year (13 career starts at Clemson). He's explosive, but truly undersized for an NFL DE. Would the Giants draft an LB at 9? I doubt it. Anyway he should be off the board to a 3-4 team, IMO.
I like him
Howyadoin : 3/6/2015 1:51 am : link
Pass rusher for sure
NIce - ( New Window )
How big were Freeney and
section125 : 3/6/2015 5:54 am : link
Mathias from the Colts? Were either one over 250? Had to be the two smallest starting DEs in the NFL.
Maybe the Giants should change to a 3-4 afterall
Giants2012 : 3/6/2015 7:17 am : link
rather than continually drafting DT, developing some, missing on others, losing good ones in free agency, etc, etc

Maybe one nose tackle is easier to find than continually looking or two DT starters, depth at the position and non-stop DE.

Would Beasley and Moore playing OLB would put as much pressure on the QB as the Giants DEs? Heck, Beason and McClain could play the middle.
Section
Rjanyg : 3/6/2015 7:48 am : link
I think Freeney was 6'1" 260. Mathis was lighter.

Giants2012. With JPP franchised and Spags coming back, talking about a base 3-4 defense is a waste of oxygen. Spags would defenitely use Beasley as a 3rd and long DE.

As much as I want him, I think Reese will go another direction, plus I would be shocked if Atlanta doesn't grab him.

Either way, Beasley is a stud athlete and will be a great pro.
Simply listing height and weight tends to be misleading
JonC : 3/6/2015 8:18 am : link
It goes beyond that into body type, power, leverage, etc.

If NYG decides they can't pass on one of the edge rushers at #9, so be it. It would signal a shift in philosophy for them, but as Torrag has said recently, spread offenses and the speed on that side of the LOS might dictate adding more speed and AA to the defense moving forward. Teams are mitigating DE with quick drops ...
If they draft one and expect him to transition
JonC : 3/6/2015 8:44 am : link
to a regular pro WILL, then insert the Goodfellas meme here. They need to continue their trend of picking well in the first round.

All teams were at the Clemson Pro Day

Beasley is a beast
George : 3/6/2015 10:40 am : link
but I'll bet teams were looking just as closely at Stephone Anthony. Either would look great in Giants' blue. Getting both of them would make me a very happy camper.
All of these reports sound a lot like
Lionhart28 : 3/6/2015 11:52 am : link
Khalil Mack last year. Played 4-3 end in college, was super productive but undersized. Then he blew up the combine and showed really well in LB drills. Yes please...
Giants tend to like the guys with 'freak' production
Coach Mason : 3/6/2015 12:09 pm : link
combined with some level of 'freak' measurables that high in the draft. Dominance early in their college career is also a big bonus as it shows such great ability that it trumps the learning curve/maturation process. Just as importantly though, as a GM you need to make an accurate assessment on character, drive, and determination.

If you look at the top 3 rounds the Giants draft pattern has been heavily tilted toward WR,CB,Pass-rusher.

The big if with Beasley is are they willing to guy for a hybrid guy that high up. He's pretty much got the production as a pass rusher combined with the freak measurables but do they beleive he can play in space? (I think he can). Honestly, I think it's either him, a surprise other pass-rusher or one of the WR's if we get an starting caliber OL in FA.
Looking at college production and
giantgiantfan : 3/6/2015 12:10 pm : link
what guys did in combine drills. My 1a is Cooper and 1b is Beasley. I'd be happy with either of these two as long as the Giants believe Beasley can be a linebacker as well as slide down to the DE roll in a Nascar type package on 3rd and long.
Giants loved Mack, had a top 5 grade on him
JonC : 3/6/2015 12:11 pm : link
but he's built a bit thicker and larger than these prospects, for the record.
Giants MUST improve linebacker pay REGARDLESS
blueblood : 3/6/2015 12:13 pm : link
period...
I'd fully expect NYG to have done significant homework
JonC : 3/6/2015 12:24 pm : link
on VB, Ray, Dupree, and perhaps even Gregory, and would be confident Spags will figure out how to deploy him off the edge.
