@JasonLaCanfora: Look for Suh deal to be massive. I keep hearing$17M/year and $60M-plus guaranteed. If he doesn't land in Miami won't be for lack of effort.
"Oakland is $56.3 million under the salary cap with the release of safety Tyvon Branch becoming official Tuesday. That becomes a league-high $69.5 million with the expected departures of defensive end LaMarr Woodley, quarterback Matt Schaub and running back Maurice Jones-Drew. That can buy a lot of players." Oakland will need to enrich the top deal by at least 15 mil. PFT broke down the advantages that Florida has with regards to no state income tax. Basically, the money that CA collects over the lifetime of the contract equates to approx $15 mil that Suh won't have to pay if he works for a Florida team. I don't think Miami is tho only contender for his services in the Sunshine State.
thing really isn't that big of a deal to these guys.
What? Do you have any idea how much income tax someone who makes 17Mil per year has to pay? Roughly 40% at the federal level. Getting a break on state taxes is huge.
about how they got to $15M but I want to point out that other states will tax you for the income you earn while working there. So he is likely to only have 1/2 of his salary be state-tax free if he plays for a team in a state with no income tax.
Your 40% argument is based on Federal income tax... Every state has to pay that. State income tax can range anywhere from 0.01 - 10%. Obviously, there are advantages in states that dont have charge a state income tax (FL, TX, NV, etc), but the benefit is usually minimized by a higher sales tax and/or property tax.
On the field but not an idiot, he will go where he can maximize his potential. Sadly, he thinks that may be NY, but Florida is his best option if he looks at pure salary. If he thinks he's marketable (he may be) then NY becomes more attractive but pure guaranteed dollars will be his aim and he won't get that in NY. DC yes, Snyder will fork over a ton for him, so will Khan in Jacksonville, but the market in Miami combined with the tax benefit may sway him that way. If he's smart he will look to NY, NE and Oakland who can guarantee marketing, titles and pure cash respectively, but my suspicion is that Suh signs somewhere no one expects...namely Dallas or Houston where the cap space exists and the spotlight can be just as bright as NY or the NFC East.

Yes I know, the only point I was trying to make was if you could get a break on the state taxes, if you're these guys you do it. Federal is already going to take a huge chunk, so if you can play in FL or TX, you probably do it.
I know the nature of NFL contracts is always that the next elite guy in line gets more than the last elite guy at his position. But that shouldn't be the case here, Suh isn't worth more than Watt.

Bingo. IMO the state tax issue does matter - as does market appeal value, ie which location boosts his endorsement earnings the most. And (non sequitur time) that's one reason Eli should give the Giants a home team discount big time to finish his career with the Giants...
state income tax. My NYS tax used to be about 1/2 what the Federal was.
Pretty sure Texas is another state w/o state income tax.
But they make you pay for it with those crazy property taxes. SOBs put up toll booths for no good reason. You don't even have to cross a bridge And taxing a Mr. Goodbar is just sad man, really sad.
RE: That contract would probably be a franchise killer by
A backloaded contract can easily eat up nearly 50% of the contract number in the last few years. An those years can be easily structured to avoid a cap hit when/if the player is cut.
The last 3 years of JJ Watt's $100 million contract pays him $45.5 million in salary, with no prorated signing bonus left. That means if the team wants they can cut him and save that entire salary off the cap.
Suh is right there with Watt. He's the most dominant run defender in the league and he gets constant pressure up the middle. I actually think you can bounce him outside in a 4-3 and he would see even more sacks.
One of the best stats of the year?
Check out that DET interior run D. It was the best the NFL has seen in 25+ years. Better than the 2000 Ravens and any other defense. Nobody could run on them. Suh beats the hell out of any man in front of him.
I would give him QB money. Not every team can have a franchise QB. Instead of overpaying for avg QB play, Suh can be the highest paid player on your team and get you to a SB.
DET was close to a Super Bowl this past year with avg QB play and he was the reason.
Suh is Reggie White. Just on another level than anybody else.
I would have liked the Giants to let JPP walk and sign Suh.
I'm not saying otherwise. And I agree that he has more positional versatility than people think. The kind of guy who'll thrive no matter what the scheme is.
But I still struggle to put him on the same level as JJ Watt. The Watt hype might be a little over the top but he deserves it. Hes a different species. As good as Suh is, McCoy and a healthy Geno Atkins might be better than him from the DT position.

It is millions of dollars.. I think its a part of things to consider.. but not THE determining factor.
I'll bet it is to their agents.

40% of 17 million is 6,800,000.
Granted, I'm sure he has a good accountant.
Just sayin, getting a break on state taxes is huge when you make big money.
LOL

If the guy gets $17 million per year and the cap goes up $10 million per year I don't forsee a problem.
This is why the Giants and really most teams were not in the running for him. That guaranteed money is QB like
As JJ Watt keeps proving, a great defensive player accounts for nothing without having a QB

Not sure if they are hoping for this or its grounded in a credible report.
Unless NS also plays OL and D.
