NFT: NFT - Greatful Dead Reunion

tomeee : 3/6/2015 8:08 am
Just curious about what others have heard.

I send in two separate money orders for two separate nights.

I got one returned in the self addressed enveloped indicating I didn't make the cut.

The second one is in limbo?

I have heard from others who got an email saying there in and tickets will be mailed by June.

I know of several others who like me got no email no snail mail and just don't know.

did you send it to the right address? check the spelling on the ticket order.
Isnt it "Grateful"?

thing (4 & 5 July shows) and have received nothing to date. I refused to decorate my envelope. Just a plain ol' white business envelope. I am hoping no news is good news, but everything I've heard sounds like they've made this a much larger money grab due to the demand, so lottery tix may be a pipe dream. We'll see. I am holding out a very slight bit of hope. That'd be one hell of a show...or shows!

I agree No Jerry no Dead but does that mean you no longer listen to the music?

It can still be a good time.

I DO agree that the Pigpen era is my favorite, by far.. the later years cannot be discounted. Keith and (gulp) Donna years were great musically, and Brent was the MAN (just a shame that Jerry was so strung out from for 90% of the Brent years)...

68-72 to me was their peak.. and I can see how someone who loves that era wouldn't like the later years. It's completely different. One was a bluesy jam, and the other is a structured song based show.

I happen to love both, but I get what yat is saying.
I LOVE me some Brent.

His sound for Feel Like a Stranger and that voice for Dear Mr. Fantasy, Hey Jude...I'm also a huge fan of Easy to Love You and Built to Last

right.. which is why I don't agree with Yat, but I totally understand where he's coming from.

it's really two different bands if you look at 1969 & 1989. there's nothing wrong with liking one of them, and not the other..

HELL, I know plenty of people who would cringe at a 2 hour set of this:

Good Morning Little School Girl> Lovelight > Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven > Caution > Feedback

sign me up for that 1000 times out of 1000

Agreed. I actually was not much of a fan of the super bluesy/folky dead

I could easily listen to that 2 hour set. In fact I would be ecstatic.

I loved the dimension Donna brought and also loved Brent.

Different era's different times. I still refer to the go to heaven album as new stuff.
I sent in for 2 ($200) for 7/4...

tommee, I always hoped (unrealistically) that just ONE show in the 80s/90s I would be surprised and they'd do a 6 song 2 hour set.. just ONCE, revert back to the 60s.

closest they came was the Hampton shows in 1989.. "Formerly The Warlocks" which was the standard "formula" with old gems.
And I love all Dead,
drkenneth : 3/6/2015 10:12 am : link
But am partial to 89-90'.....Even Bobby says that was the best years.

But, I love all eras.
I've seen over 100 shows
tomeee : 3/6/2015 10:19 am : link
but have never seen St. Stephen -> The Eleven.

Did see it by the other ones at Brendan Byrne
"Formerly The Warlocks" is a great set of shows...
drkenneth : 3/6/2015 10:23 am : link
But I have to say: 3/29/90 "Wake Up to Find Out" (The Branford show), may be the best show I have ever heard...

Sound is amazing, great set list, Jerry's on fire..

I've never heard that before.. I can see if there's a sentimental connection to the late 80s (first show or so on), but to be involved with it and like it more than late 60s - late 70s? wow.

thanks! I wonder if he was just trying to sell the box set?

Hey, it's his taste.. but...

1) Jerry's chops were never the same after his coma
2) Jerry's voice was never the same after smoking so much heroin and snorting so much cocaine
3) Predictable formula every set

I thought when Brent died they were hitting on all cylinders and really gelling.. but I personally have a hard time comparing it to 1970, or 1977.. it was a different stratosphere then.
I think they were having a lot of fun in 89-90...

If you sent in one envelope and you got an email daying that you got tix then all of your orders will be filled... Don't go by money order status. I got the email and none of my moneyorders have been cashed at this point. If you didn't get an email then you are NOT getting tix, UNLESS you forgot to provide your email address. If you say one order has been cashed then I am assuming you will be getting tix for whatever you ordered

Keith's keys were awesome.. I refer to the great keys during Big River.. awesome. But..with Keith you got Donna . lol

But, I loved Brent's use of the B3

that being said.. Pigpen ripped up the blues harp, and held his own on the keys.

I'm all about the pigpen

Bluesy jam band vs. more structured and melodic but softer sound. Liked both, but a lot of younger folks don't even know from the original Dead's sound.

I loved that Hammond B3 sound. Did not care for Donna's caterwauling. And Jerry was the best 9-fingered guitarist on this or any other planet. IMO.

$$$$. Phish / Dead fans are all over this.
As recently as a week ago ...
BronxBob : 3/6/2015 2:04 pm : link
the dead50-dot-net site indicated they were still in the process of returning money orders. Before I read that, I though my friend who had heard nothing was in good pose. But, I hadn't heard about the email heads-up mentioned above, so he may be s.o.l. after all.

I mostly saw shows between 1971-77 and a few after that. I don't think there was one where they did not play China Cat/IKYR. OTOH, I hardly ever saw St. Stephen, and when I did, it wasn't sandwiched between Dart Star and The Eleven.

I saw Lesh at Forest Hills last summer and he played The Eleven; it was great to hear. I think it's my favorite fast jam, though I have come across die-hard fans of Viola Lee Blues for that, too.

If I manage to get to any of these *Independence* shows, I will take it for what it is and hope I hear some of my faves ... and I suspect they will try to offer fans from/of every era that possibility.

Good point they get both the Phish and Dead markets.

If they really wanted just the $$$$ why didn't they add more shows? They could have done 3 at the Meadowlands.

Dark Star Orchestra? Have they ever played an arena let alone a stadium?

Trey plays the Dead phenomenally. Listen to these 3 shows if you dont think he should be playing with them.

4.17.99

Trey absolutely crushes these shows.

Rob Barraco was doing that to Lesh off and on in the show I saw last summer, but Phil was gracious; it seemed like Barraco was actually doing some conducting of the whole performance and maybe Phil didn't want to put his nose out of joint.

Because Dark Star Orch is a cover band. Tribute band if u want to take it a step further. A good one, but a cover band nonetheless. They dont improvise. They arent as jazz oriented as Trey and Phish. He is the best at what he does: jam on guitar. Yes he needs structure, but he is the best at that jammy guitar. DSO's Mattson is stuck in a rut as far as his playing: Dead songs for Dead acts. I think they want more for this show.

And yes, I think the band recognizes that it has an influence over Phish too and as such should incorporate a bit of its style to their final send off seeing as how 4 of their band members couldnt be present (excluding Welnick of course).
I received my returned money order
tomeee : 3/10/2015 7:39 am : link
So as I have been thinking if you didn't get a positive conformation e-mail it is just a matter of time until they stuff all the self addressed envelops with rejection letters.
FWIW ...
BronxBob : 3/10/2015 2:39 pm : link
... I've never been to a Phish show, but I caught Los Lobos at Irving Plaza a few years ago and they brought out Trey toward the end of a long set and all launched into an extended Not Fade Away. I wouldn't be worried about how he's going to work out in these Chicago shows.
