Mock Off Season

Pep22 : 3/6/2015 11:03 am
Just having fun w/ some guesses (hopes) for this offseason. Accuracy would be sheer luck at this point.

FA losses: Rolle, Williams, nobody else worth mentioning

FA acquisitions: DE Sheard, S Moore

Draft:

Rd 1 - DT Danny Shelton - I don't think he is limited to one position (its been suggested that he is a NT in the Wilfork mold), I think Shelton + Big Hank gives us a DT pair that can dominate games like the Jets, Lions and Panthers have had at the DT position of late.

Rd 2 - G Tre Jackson - I thought he was the best OL at the Senior Bowl practices. He has the perfect physique, mentality and mobility to be a very good guard prospect. This means Pugh stays at RT. I think Beatty - Jackson - Richburg - Schwartz - Pugh can be an outstanding line.

Rd 3 - LB Stephone Anthony - As much as we all like Beason, esp at reduced $, going into the season w him at MLB w/ no viable backup is fools gold. Anthony is perfect protégé for him.

Rd 4 - WR Ty Montgomery - I see him as a Swiss Army knife player, sort of a poor man's Percy Harvin (less explosive, but still an impressive athlete). Elite returner, dangerous with the ball in his hands, better WR than his 2014 production. High character kid.

Rd 5 - TE Nick O'Leary - Yes, his measurable aren't ideal and he will drop a couple of rounds as a result. But he's ultra competitive/smart/reliable and to the extent teams want to give all that attention to OBJ, we need to make them pay with easy 1st down pitch/catches where safeties vacated their spots.

Rd 6 - LB Ben Heeney - Going back to the LB well with a BBI favorite. Kid is an athlete than may be overwhelmed size wise at MLB. I see him as a certain special teams maniac and possible WLB.

Rd 7 - RB Thomas Rawls - Reminds me of the Bradshaw pick. Same size, similar violent style, and a checkered past. Reese will give him the same message "one strike and you're gone".

Rd 7a - CB Cam Thomas - Tall, feisty, confident CB that may ultimately translate to a S. Ball hawk but not a burner.

Anthony

Is not going round 3. Supposedly killed his Pro Day yesterday and buzz at Clemson was that he is definitely a top 45 pick.

As Draftniks

We're only as good as the websites allow us to be. To have certainty over him being a top 45 seems unlikely. But if it makes you feel better, sub in Perryman.

Certainly speaks volumes about the validity of your plan and your overall maturity.

Well, you were kind of being an asshole about it. I don't love his plan and I think we need to sign at least one starting OL before the draft but you were being pretty condescending about it.

Also, in this era of the NFL I think GMs expect a 2nd round guard to be able to start.

2/15er. Who is the dupe?
yatqb : 10:11 am : link : reply

Doesn't matter, Pep. You put out a plan, so let folks comment on it without the vitriol.

I too think that Anthony could go in round 2, and frankly think he'd be a great pick for the Giants if we take care of other business in FA.

Shelton is a puzzle to me. First, I think a 3-4 team will take him before #9. But in games I've watched he can be a powerhouse, or he can play high and be neutralized by pretty ordinary players. I'd prefer Malcom Brown given our scheme.

that is fair and balanced. Thanks

Let's talk about the DT spot. We have Hank and little else. I like Kuhn as a 4th DT. Bromley is not something we can count on yet. I think a starting DT needs to come out of the draft or FA. None of us see Suh happening. Fairley doesn't have a prefessional's mentality. Knighton is a pure NT. Raji has had two off year's in a row. Melton, Paea, Williams are interesting targets. But if no starting caliber FA DT lands w/ the NYG, one would think its a priority draft target. Certainly our DL was incredibly talented in Spags previous regime, but how would you describe his scheme as it relates to DTs? Tell me what you think/know about Brown (I didn't get to see Texas this year).

Overall I like the draft
SLIM_ : 10:36 am : link : reply

and not critical of addressing the line until rd 2. They could also sign another journeyman lineman for competition and bring back Jerry. I'm in the minority but you can put together a competent line with Jerry as your 5th starter. The problem was last year, he probably was the 3rd best as Richburg was a rookie playing out of position and Walton was subpar. Jerry and another vet could be enough to not have to be forced to take an OL in the 1st round but a potentially better alternative to sinking money into a free agent lineman. Best case is that we get a major upgrade in the draft but again it doesn't force us to pick.

I want the draft to focus on the front 7 (def) and front 6 (off). We get a DL and 2 LBs that could contribute along with an OL and TE also. Not bad.

Giants

generally dont take DT's in round one because they tend to redshirt them their first year. Plus he is a better fit for a 3-4... I cant see them going Shelton..
2 things
Pep22 : 3/6/2015 11:09 am : link
1. I deleted the nonsense in this thread
2. Re: red shirting DTs - true, but while Hank effectively replaced Joseph, Bromley likely isn't ready to step into a significant role
Pep, Brown is a very athletic 3 technique DT.
yatqb : 3/6/2015 11:35 am : link
Fast, penetrator, gets sacks as a DT, gonna go by about 20, I'd guess, and perhaps a lot higher. Very hard working, mature, married with a kid. Can also swing to DE at times.
pretty compelling

Like the O'Leary pick

Be cool to have the golden bears grandkid on the team
March 6, 2015 Fanspeak's mock draft.
chiefmps : 3/6/2015 11:58 am : link

1). DT DANNY SHELTON WASHINGTON.
2). DE XAVIER COOPER WASHINGTON STATE.
3). TE JESSE JAMES PENN STATE.
4). OT CEDRIC OGBUEHI TEXAS A&M.
5). OLB JORDAN HICKS TEXAS.
6). WR DEZMIN LEWIS CENTRAL ARKANSAS.
7). OLB TONY WASHINGTON OREGON.
7). RB COREY GRANT AUBURN.

Why? As of now the Giants have Ayers and Jenkins as starter on the left side of the defensive line. Ayers is ok but like him more as dept and Jenkins is aging veteran who best days are behind him. Shelton is a day one starter and a vast improvement over Jenkins and Cooper is someone that should be a starter but will play backup but for only a short time.

James, was not sure with this pick, could have gone WR but did not feel that the Giants will get a talented TE if they waited.

Ogbuehi is a steal at this pick and a need for the Giants, will still like to see the Giants sign one free agent on the offensive line still but when healthy and that should be by mid pre season Ogbuehi will be the starting RT for the Giants.

Hicks and Washington, the Giants need linebackers, what else is there to say. Just hope that Hicks will remain healthy.

Lewis is a talented WR and would willing to work his way into a starting spot unlike using a high pick on a WR.

Grants, great speed, just give him a a whole and just watch him out run the linebackers.

really nicely done
One last thing about mock draft.
chiefmps : 3/6/2015 12:30 pm : link
Free Agents... Secondary needs with free agents and not the draft. Can Giants can only do so much with the picks they have.
OK here's one from me, but only 6rds deep Mock Draft

FA: Resign JPP, address DT & OL (prob RT), S (prob Moore)

Draft:
RD1: Cooper/White - one of them will be there and I don't see JR passing on a blue chip WR.
RD2: Kendricks/McKinney/Anthony - obv would love to see an ILB here
RD3: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu
RD4: David Johnson/Javorius Allen- deep RB class
RD5: Jarvis Harrison
RD6: Xavier Williams

Draft:
RD1: Cooper/White - one of them will be there and I don't see JR passing on a blue chip WR. --> if OL were sufficiently addressed, this would be one hell of a WR corps
RD2: Kendricks/McKinney/Anthony - obv would love to see an ILB here --> McKinney I believe to be overrated and not instinctive, love the other two
RD3: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu --> great player, likely to play in 2015?
RD4: David Johnson/Javorius Allen- deep RB class --> love David Johnson, think he's very similar to DeMarco Murray
RD5: Jarvis Harrison
RD6: Xavier Williams
I like picks 3-6
JonC : 3/6/2015 12:49 pm : link
Would prefer an OT over OG, but would be cool with Tre.

Malcom Brown would be a better fit than Shelton for NYG, but I'd be shocked if they picked a DT that early, it would be a change in philosophy.

They're going to look pass rusher, WR, or left tackle at #9.
There is no way
tomjgiant : 3/6/2015 7:09 pm : link
That they do not address the OL before the second round of the draft, and I mean in a big way.
I am all for Tre Jackson but that can not and will not be the only premium addition to the team.

Tommy, you're in for a big shock. The Giants will get a nice FA guard or guard/tackle. That will free them up to go BPA in the first and that means no Oline guy at pick 9.

tomjgiant : 3/7/2015 1:17 pm : link
they will add at least 2 premium OL I was including FA,so the 1st round pick does not have to be OL.
