Will Cooper be There at 9, Or will The Bears Draft him?

InvisibleBlack : 3/6/2015 12:38 pm
The bears need defense and Pass rush. Need mocks.
Cooper feels like

the perfect compliment to Alshon.
Bears are interesting - Fox is a trenches guy so i'd guess pass rusher
Eric on Li : 3/6/2015 12:42 pm : link
but OL could also be in play. If they are switching to a 3-4 I think they'll add a nose in FA, but if not Shelton would make sense too.

Shelton to the Bears for a while now. Feels really likely based on their history and preferences.
Fox is a D guy
Coach Mason : 3/6/2015 12:43 pm : link
and their D is a mess. Tons of good WR options in round 2 (not that it matter to the new regime but they also got Jeffery in round 2)
Osi, thanks for that

Trading Marshall might change the calculus ...
Shelton or a pass rusher
jeff57 : 3/6/2015 12:45 pm : link
is still my guess.
Bears will go
Lionhart28 : 3/6/2015 12:46 pm : link
OL or DL in round 1 would be my guess... Tons of good mid-round receivers and they just need somebody to compliment Jeffrey... Furthermore, that D was absolutely atrocious last season
the bears need
area junc : 3/6/2015 12:48 pm : link
pass rushers alot more than they need to spend #7 overall on a NT

why not throw a few $$$ at a NT in free agency and draft into the strength of the top 10?
Not sure it makes sense to trade Marshall, then
drkenneth : 3/6/2015 12:49 pm : link
draft a WR top 10. I mean, they had a top WR duo + Bennett + Forte.

Spending a top 10 on a WR doesn't make sense.

Trading Marshall

is most likely a signal of a personality conflict with Cutler, imo.

I'd agree they probably go defense, though.
My only hope is the Giants pass on Cooper at 9...
WillieYoung : 3/6/2015 12:57 pm : link
he then falls to the second round and we pass on him again, just to torture the Cooper posters the way they've tortured the rest of us. I am starting to long for the Aaron Donald days.
the other thing to consider
Pep22 : 3/6/2015 1:02 pm : link
is that Cooper falls to 9 and the Browns possibly see an opportunity to move up for the cost of their 12th pick and a 3rd rounder or their 19th pick and a 2nd rounder
Bears
stretch234 : 3/6/2015 1:03 pm : link
Their D is terrible, especially if they let Paea walk. Are they really going to rely on J Allen & L Briggs as old as they are.

They have to draft defense. They were 31st in points allowed, 30th in yards allowed in 14, after being ranked 30th in both in 2013

Is that something recent? I thought he targeted Chicago in a trade from Miami because of Cutler.

Here is what Marshall had to say about Cutler pre-trade to Chicago.

Quote:
"It's hard to find that and sometimes it's once in a lifetime," Marshall said, "…when you take two guys and put them on the field together and they have that chemistry, that's what's almost impossible to find. I can't explain it. That's why I said it's almost painful to think about.

"We'll line up there and we'll get a coverage and he will just look at me and I'll know exactly where he wants to adjust my route. You don't find that. It got to a point where coaches, they didn't know what we were doing so we'll install a whole play and they'll give us a play on the front side and put me on the back side and they'll tell us just do what you all do and just make it work. We had a lot of freedom in our offense, and we made it work and chemistry was great. It was something special."

The Browns Could've had Watkins. If they Trade for Cooper...LOL
Their relationship on-field last season
JonC : 3/6/2015 1:08 pm : link
appeared pretty icy. Cutler, in general, isn't a player who consistently inspires his teammates with his attitude or his performance, so it wouldn't surprise me if things soured quickly with a fiery star WR.

I'm starting to allow myself
bceagle05 : 3/6/2015 1:10 pm : link
to at least dream of the possibility of Beckham, Cooper and Cruz. If Mariota's gone (one way or another) and the Jets are not looking WR, it's not a crazy thought.
or
JonC : 3/6/2015 1:10 pm : link
perhaps they simply wanted out from under BM's contract, given the team is essentially now in a rebuild. Fox coming in will likely dictate some significant change, strong personalities could get the boot, given how poorly the Bears performed in 2014. They were as bad at times as the 2013 NYG.

Yeah, Cutler was a pariah last year, he even appeared to justify his "Don't care" meme.

I haven't seen anything that has mentioned Cutlet as I don't think he even has that kind of pull (to get a player traded) when he himself is known to be available for trade.

From what I've read and have heard reported, this was about freeing up money for the present and in the future when they will have to pay Jeffrey. I also keep hearing about the FO not being happy with Marshall flying out to NY every week to record Inside The NFL. They feel he is not 100% focused on football.

PFT on NBC Sports channel yesterday had one of the sportswriters from Chicago on. He said that Marshall would be gone because he is not 100% about football anymore (working on television in NY), declining production, and no desire to be a true leader in the clubhouse. Said the chances of Marshall being on the Bears was less than 10% and would be gone within a week.

Sounds like the guy was very plugged into the situation.

Pat Kirwan on Moving the Chains the other day and he felt that Vic Beasley would be their guy at #7 to play the 3-4 pass rushing LB which made a lot of sense. This would be a better senecio for the Giants to get a Shelton or Cooper, if available.
The 'Bears have to draft defense' argument is ironic, from Giant fans.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/6/2015 3:21 pm : link
The 2014 Giants were 29th in total defense, and 30th vs. the run. Chicago was 30th overall, and 30th vs. the pass. If the Bears "must" draft defense, the same logic applies to the Giants.

Yes, the Giants have a new coordinator. So do the Bears, and his recent track record is much better than Spagnuolo's.
BBB- The thing is:
drkenneth : 3/6/2015 3:26 pm : link
They already stink with one of the most talented (if not, the)offenses in the league.

The idea that they would go back to the well again and draft a WR is silly.

The Giants defense has talent, despite what some here say.

ColHowPepper : 3/6/2015 7:04 pm : link
except to the extent that need on OL is big to solidify the pieces and ensure that Eli and the offense can run BM's offense.

I understand the Cooper love and the abundance of riches he would confer, but Reese has been there, done that, and we have a very unbalanced roster to show for it. If Shelton, or Beaseley or someone else is there at 9 who is ranked ~ equal to the offensive pieces, give the D some love; then OL, then grab the next Rueben Randle at 2.

doc, as you say, I think you'll get an argument from many here. You're saying Fewell was the problem more than personnel? Ouch, poor Spags
I just think Fewell was an issue.
drkenneth : 3/6/2015 7:12 pm : link
Shit- If Spags can stop a 3 & 17 here and there, he would already be better than PF.

I think Rolle has gas left. Teams would kill for DRC + Prince. You have a top DE (JPP), a rising DT (Hankins), Kennard, Wynn, Ayers.

People here act as if there is zero talent on D. That just isn't true. Injuries were a big factor as well.
Moore (who I think is being undersold here)

Da Bears had an embarrassing defense, they've got Fox (a defensive coach) and their franchise identity is defense. They're picking a pass rusher or a DL
Dr.Kenneth - How many of the defensive players you named are:
Big Blue Blogger : 3/6/2015 7:34 pm : link
a) Even a little bit proven and;
b) Signed beyond this season?
Answer: Two - Hankins and Rodgers-Cromartie.

I'm a pretty strict BPA guy, but I'm kind of hoping the BPA at #9 plays defense.
This thread calls to mind the discussion of Kirwan's new mock.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/6/2015 7:50 pm : link
So here's the first half of his Round One prediction:

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State.
2. Tennessee Titans: Leonard Williams, DT, USC.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Randy Gregory, OLB, Nebraska.
4. Philadelphia Eagles (trade with OAK): Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon.
5. Washington Redskins: Dante Fowler, OLB/DE, Florida.
6. N.Y. Jets: Vic Beasley, OLB, Clemson.
7. Chicago Bears: Landon Collins, S, Alabama.
8. Atlanta Falcons: Shane Ray, DE-OLB, Missouri.
9. N.Y. Giants: La'el Collins, OL, LSU.
10. St. Louis Rams: Andrus Peat, LT, Stanford.
11. Minnesota Vikings: Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama.
12. Cleveland Browns: Kevin White, WR, West Virginia.
13. New Orleans Saints: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan St.
14. Miami Dolphins: Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa..
15. San Francisco 49ers: DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville.
16. Houston Texans: Danny Shelton, NT, Washington.

Of the two Collins picks, I like the Giants' better than the Bears'. If Shane Ray is really good enough to go to Atlanta at #8, the question becomes why Chicago would pass at #7 and take an imperfect strong safety prospect. I guess the theory there is that Ray grades out much better in a 3-4 than a 4-3.
I am 100% for going defense #9.
drkenneth : 3/6/2015 7:51 pm : link
The issue there is: Can you show me who this defensive player is?

I understand we are all guessing at this point, but it sure as shit looks like BPA is an offensive player: WR (Cooper/White/Parker) & OL (Collins/Scherff).

None of these DE/S/LB prospects make any sense.
And..I just don't think this D is bad as it looks.
drkenneth : 3/6/2015 7:53 pm : link
I think people are over-reacting. The offense was a complete shit-show for over a year, and now arrow is up. O was/in much worse shape.
Seriously?
Doomster : 3/6/2015 10:02 pm : link
You have a top DE (JPP), a rising DT (Hankins), Kennard, Wynn, Ayers.

Kennard, Wynn and Ayers in the same sentence with JPP and Hankins? Wishful thinking.....
drkenneth: The biggest reason the arrow on offense is pointing up...
Big Blue Blogger : 3/6/2015 10:19 pm : link
...is last year's draft picks, particularly the selection of Beckham early in the first round. The arrow on defense isn't going to turn upward magically.
And again, that's not an argument for forcing a pick.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/6/2015 10:23 pm : link
It's an acknowledgement of the talent Spagnuolo inherited. As the roster currently stands, the Giant defense needs nearly perfect health just to be average. Obviously, there's plenty of time for it to improve.
Blogger, I would agree with that statement
Coach Mason : 3/6/2015 10:38 pm : link
but only because we absolutely have zilch at safety.

With near perfect health and a good FA safety you have JPP, an emerging Hankins, Ayers who played extremely well last year, Moore who at the least is an effective pass rusher who hopefully blossoms under a new system, and arguably one of the top CB tandems in the NFL in DRC and Prince.

LBers w/ a healthy Beason are not bad and have a promising youngster in Kennard . Even without Beason we were able to win two super-bowls without necessarily spectacular LBer play.

Not to say this defense is championship caliber but with some health, a more player friendly system , and maybe a couple FA and draft contributors, it may be alot better than we think.

What Coach said.

my hunch
hightop cleats : 3/6/2015 10:43 pm : link
is that the first 4 (5?) rounds will be focused exclusively on a combination of linemen and linebackers. and frankly, i'm not particularly consumed with who they land in rd. 1 and 2 -- there will be plenty of talent available. and given that its the giants we are discussing, one of the first 4 picks will inevitably be someone most of us have never even heard of.

additionally, i bet they take care of safety almost exclusively in FA (except maybe a throw in during round 6 or 7). that's a GIGANTIC need given how many plays of 40+ yards the team gave up last year. rolle - though i LOVE the guy's heart - has lost too many steps too quickly in this more up-tempo game. but what a inspirational player/leader he was. sign him up immediately as a position coach.

furthermore, i doubt they either will or can afford to break the bank on a ton of FAs when they become available the next few days (absent safeties). why? a) they don't have the money (absent an unlikely eli extension) and b) because they had such bad luck last year with FAs at or near the ends of their careers. like too many organizations i can count, they will over-react and swing way back to the other side of the pendulum taking only young guys coming off their introductory lease.

my bet, too, is that they absorb harsh criticism for what will be perceived as an unaggressive and uninspired FA season and wait to pick up guys they need at final cuts.... but only after they straighten everyone's contract and better understand where the gaping holes are. but , hey, what do i know? i have no friggin idea what's going on over there!

if Cooper is there at 9, hopefully the Giants will run to the podium. If he's there in the 2nd round (he won't be), they better fucking teleport to it.
If we sign a starting OLineman in FA
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 3/7/2015 1:51 am : link
Cooper has to be the number one pick. We have Eli Manning, playmaker. You saw what he just did with just Beckham. If he had another young WR who got open at will at all three levels like him...

Last years rookie WR class was amazing. All 3 of the top guys flashed potential, Beckham leading the pack. I'd take Cooper 4th. ODB 1st. Evans Watkins a toss up, but I'm a Watkins guy. Cooper might be the safest but I don't know if he has the same ceiling as the other two.

But we just saw Beckhams ceiling. Cooper feels like a safe bet to atleast be a clear upgrade over Randle. With the potential of Reggie Wayne but tougher. Cooper being a "safe" pick means that Beckham/Cooper would be a safe bet to be a dominant duo with Randle/Cruz interesting options with potential.

Give Eli weapons. FA OL like Franklin + Safety + Cooper is my favorite scenario right now.

He might last. Stranger things have happened. Despite all his production he is just so smooth in the way he plays that may work against him.

Many teams in the top 10-15 want a player that screams 'freak of nature' or 'dominant' when they watch tape. This kid doesn't have amazing height or blazing speed per se (though a 4.42 isn't slow by any means) and when you watch him he doesn't 'break ankles' like Odell.

He just gets it done though is going to be a damn good football player.
