but we've seen first hand what the learning curve can be like for young RBs whose main attribute is athleticism (Wilson).
Jennings is far from explosive and he had a very positive impact on the offense last year. Hopefully Vereen can build on that and do even more out of the backfield.
Tiki 2.0 he is not for all you bed wetters who think he may be, besides, who will open holes or pass protect in order to show this guy to be effective in any way ?

Troll harder. How sad is it that you can't even stick to one identity on a msg board?
The contract will influence my overall opinion of this signing. The player isn't the issue...he's a good player and fits a need. We have limited resources and just spent $$$ on Jennings in free agency last year. He also provides insurance in the slot as a WR in case Cruz suffers a setback.

Shane Vereen has agreed to terms what I've heard will be a four-year deal with the Giants. Could be worth more than $16 million total.

Welp, that will get the "overpaid" crowd in a frenzy...
But please quiet my fears. Was he benched by BB because he fumbled a lot? Or am I confusing this with another Pats running back?
Ridley was the Pats RB who got benched because of fumbling issues, not Vereen. Ironically Vereen got more of a chance to play because of Ridley's issues. According to Football Reference Vereen has only fumbled twice in his career
and all the guaranteed money (I'd guess about $5 million) is in the first two years. If I had to guess his cap # this year is very small (between $1 and $2.5 million)
This is insane. Come on now. BTW who will be blocking for him?????
The only insane thing here are opinions like this. the 16 mil number doesnt necessarily mean anything if some of the years are voidable, money isnt guaranteed, etc.
And because they sign Vereen, that means they can't sign O-lineman or draft O-lineman? Give me a break
before BBI jumps off a ledge of misunderstanding on how contracts actually work, go back and look at the Brandon Myers contract from 2013. He signed a contract that said 4 year, $14.25 million on all the scrolls...but wait, that's not how the contract really worked.
Quote:
The answer: A contract creatively structured to be very cap-friendly. Myers' contract is on the books for four years, $14.25 million -- but the final three years, each with a base salary of $4 million, are all voidable. So the contract is essentially a one-year deal worth $2.25 million.
Myers received a $1.5 million signing bonus, a $725,000 fully guaranteed base salary for 2013 and a $25,000 workout bonus. His cap number for 2013 is a very reasonable $1.125 million.
So at the end of the day. He really was a one year, $1.125 million contract against the cap on the one year he was actually on the roster. Details matter, if you actually pay attention.
Takes pressure of Jennings; we now have 2 guys that caN CATCH OUT OF THE BACKFIELD.
NOW OF WE CAN GET OL AND WR THAT CAN BLOCK SO THEY CAN GET SOME YARDS...
can people like Chip and Salty Meats look at the top line reported # on a contract and think that it is relevant? You have to look at guarantees and how much he'll make over the first half of the deal.
Interestingly ESPN Boston recently talked about a fair deal for Vereen being 16/4. Their structure was $4 million guaranteed, with base salaries of $1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5. If that is the structure, here is his total payment depending on # of years played here:
1 years: $5.5 million
2 years: $8 million
3 years: $11.5 million
4 years: $16 million
I assume no UFA will ever play out the full contract. 8/2 or 11.5/3 dont upset me. Seems steep, but I dont consider Vereen a big difference maker. But its not back breaking.
I don't see the Vereen signing influencing Jenning's
Yeahhhhh, I doubt that. Vereen fills a hole. Cutting Jennings would simply open up another one. He's a high character, locker-room guy that was very effective when active. By lessening his load, it effectively improves his status in my eyes.
RE: Jennings is going to be cut. Probably designated
But I do think they signeed Vereen in part to be insurance in case Jennings gets hurt again. Don't think the Giants 100% trust Jennings when it comes to being healthy, which I don't blame them for.
The Giants really needed a guy like Vereen. I'd still draft a guy if someone the Giants love slips but we finally have s pretty well rounded group, barring injury. Now addess the OL and the offense should be even better in 2015.
Vereen, Jennings, and Williams is a potent trio in the backfield. Obviously the Giants still have a lot of work to do on the O-line, but if they can stabilize it, then the offense is going to be pretty potent.
4 million a year for another part time player....Way to go Reese. Wow. I know he will be a weapon but money would have been better served spent on a DL DE or Safety.

We don't know the terms of the deal and FA doesn't technically start for another hour and 53 minutes. Let's pump the brakes on the Reese bashing.

Jennings gets hurt and all we have is a second year back and a rookie both of whom are still or will be learning how to pass protect in the nfl plus sv. Is an excellent receiver
about the confidence the coaches have in depth behind Jennings and how dramatic the fall off was last year after his injury. I don't think this has something to do with Jennings and more to do with #2 on.
Could be hurt since he was all last year but for some reason remained on the active roster of the Super Bowl contending Giants. This whole Vereen signing has most of us lost in space is he really a priority for this team to win games?
about the confidence the coaches have in depth behind Jennings and how dramatic the fall off was last year after his injury. I don't think this has something to do with Jennings and more to do with #2 on.
Disagree. I think it shows their concern about Jennings holding up a whole season.
'This whole Vereen signing has most of us lost in space'
And Jennings is going nowhere. He is the primary back, with Andre coming in at times, with Shane as the 3d down back. And if any of the three get hurt, you then have the 2 backs splitting time. Much better than having Hillis (last year) or Darkwa (if nobody signed) as your third back. In today's NFL, you need 3 backs. And a pass-catching back in a McAdoo offense is a terrific addition.

This is the NFL, every year, a month or 2 prior to the regular season, you can find a rotational RB and sign him to the roster and he can be an effective piece for a fraction of cost. I truly believe spending $16mill+ at a position that is not a dire need is foolish, I will shut my mouth once I start seeing the big bodies up front be signed.
Myers was a bad structure. A pay raise in year two that guaranteed it was a one year deal, but also cost us 1+ in cap space in year two.
If true this puts three significant rb. Last years pick is still cheap, but where are all these touches going to go.
If we're gonna spend that kind of money on a backup, would rather it be on some sort of decent ol, rather than the minimum wage dregs type of the past.

If you are going to battle over Eli's passing accuracy God help us. Eli is not TB and he sucks at hiting small backs out of the backfield, do you really believe all those previous backs ran the wrong routes?
He is pass catching threat out of the backfield. Brady has targeted him 146 times the last 2 years.
You guys are missing a much bigger picture. Brady has time to step back, survey his options, then get the ball out. Eli has had no such luxury for 3 years now.
7 playoff games - 32 catches 324 yds
He can handle the blitz and knows how to catch the ball
And I think he just turned 26.
My first thought was that Jennings would be cut as well.

Matt (thanks for the primer on him): "and worth every penny of it!" I hope the contract "friendliness" of Myers, if such is the case, is the only comparison hereafter made.
Jennings or Williams. Williams is going to need a run blocker or his YPC will always suck. He's no Ron Dayne but this shit Oline isn't going help Williams at all.
Seems like Vereen is going to make a linebacker get to a zone every time he's in the backfield. Good. Got Beckham doubled? Cruz too? I don't think so.
Dynamic receiving running back (99 receptions over past two seasons) who is a matchup nightmare against linebackers and can line up at receiver. Has improved inside, but hes not an every-down back. Best fit: Giants. With Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams, Giants have two solid every-down backs, but they lack a receiving threat to make Ben McAdoos system really go. http://mmqb.si.com/2015/03/04/nfl-top-free-agents-1-50/ - ( New Window )

Don't worry about the oline. Nobody else seems worried.
I asked always-upbeat Rashad Jennings about a potential Vereen signing: "I don't care who they bring in. This is my year."

what they are trying to do with this offense. This offense likes to have the dumpoff as a viable option when the receivers are covered. And he is very capable at picking up blitzers. 50 reception each of last two years. Not necessarily a home run threat but can occasionally catch some nice mid range passes too.
IMO though the single most important thing this team needs is a Safety with plus range. Steve will want to play a bunch of man with DRC/Prince and we need a safety back there that has the speed and instincts to back them up.
We have 4 out of 5 OL already penciled in as starters with another in Jones who they are high on. I'd certainly take another starter here but safety is by far the greater need given current state of roster and dearth at position in draft.
McCourty would have been the one guy I would have expected Giants to pony up for.
They now need to at least get one of Parker or Moore and not be afraid to pay current market price while doing so.
I said this morning I hoped they signed him. Living in New England
Barring serious injury, I don't see Jennings going anywhere. I think Vereen is going to play a big role and is a good signing if the G$ isn't crazy.
Giants are not a team that just cuts people after 1 year due to injury. When they sign a player they 'commit' to them for a couple years at least and give them plenty of opportunity to produce.
Jennings is not getting cut. Look to beason as another example.

Sounds like Shane Vereen's deal w/Giants will be in the 3-year, $12M range. Not 4 years. Guaranteed money will be about $5M, sources say.
He's here to fill the David Wilson role, except Vereen has a lot more polish in route running, vision, and pass blocking. Doesn't have the elite athleticism DW has, but a very good athlete with quick feet in his own right.
I fear that he'll be underutilized here, but I hope I'm wrong. To pigeonhole him as just a bubble screen guy would be a bad idea. He has legitimate RB skills and was even making goal line carries for NE.
Another thing is that this is just such a deep RB draft class, you'd rather use FA money elsewhere.
and would only save $1.2 million if released. He's not going anywhere. Plus he was the offense until he was hurt and is a beast.
I like the signing. If used right this threesome of backs could do some good things. ODB stretching the field with Cruz underneath, I hope, and now Vereen out of the backfield the whole field has to be covered. If Donnell makes strides this year it could be really fun to watch.

That's an odd fear considering all the ways they found to get Beckham the ball last year. And he was a rookie with no training camp.
I think you'll see Vereen lined up all over the field.
Lost out on Searcy, Baluga, Suh, Parnell Mcghee, Hughes, Branch...Reese hard at work I see...Hey but we signed Vareen...LOL
You named five players. Of 32 teams does that mean 27 GM's are failures in your eyes? Would you be happy if Reese signed Suh to 6 years 120 million?
Who would you cut to fit that number under the cap? I suggest you visit overthecap.com and try to find a way. When you're done, ask yourself if the team is better.
as such he offers insurance against a Cruz setback. Versatility is critical in keeping defenses guessing.
Great point Torrag, I was thinking about that earlier as well. I'm sure it's not lost on the FO that this guy has spent a lot of time operating out of the slot...
He and Jennings could run the entire playbook and it would allow more flexibility in using RB's. Both of them are like Bradshaw and Ward with Williams playing the Brandon Jacobs role. As an added plus, Vereen can split out as he is a match-up problem in space
McAdoo did a great job moving OBJ all over the field. Now, if Cruz comes back he'll have another versatile guy who can lineup in the back field and pass protect or go anywhere on the field. Should be able to cause some matchup problems with teams. Decent at ball security, too.
Adds a dimension the Giants didn't have. With Williams and Jennings, they can pound it inside and with Vereen (Jennings too) they can hit you with the pass.
Giants sign RB Shane Vereen (3 years, $12M; $5M guaranteed): A Grade
It makes absolutely no sense that a 26-year-old Shane Vereen is getting less money than a 32-year-old Frank Gore, but that's NFL free agency for you. I think this is a great signing. Vereen is the perfect complement to Andre Williams, as he happens to be a great pass-catching threat and third-down option to go along with Williams' power running.
Vereen will threaten to haul in 50 or more receptions with the Giants in 2015. He'll serve as a nice safety vale for Eli Manning, whose pass protection hasn't improved yet. Vereen will help the blocking issues, as Manning will just be able to dump the ball off to him amid a heavy rush. Vereen will also command attention out of the backfield, which can only help Odell Beckham Jr.
when we dont spend enough money. People bitch when we spend too much money without even knowing the details. Here's what I know.
We havent had a good pass catching 3rd down back since Tiki. He is an improvement over what we had. We have a lot of holes on this team and this absolutely fills one. You think the Eagles werent ecstatic over what Sproles did for them last year.
This is an absolutely a fantastic signing and people who are bitchign about this are the same people who cry when we cant get a back to convert third downs. Not only does Vereen catch out of the backfield, but he lines up as a WR as well. And here's another fun fact, he is a pretty decent runner too.

Good job Reese.
Exactly. And he got signed basically for pennies.
Does anyone remember how much our offense sputtered when
Vereen will give Big Blue another weapon they didn't seem to have last season. Improving the ground game is so important. Now they have to tighten up their line!
This seems like a great signing to me. The guy can catch and block. The entire Pats game plan in the Super bowl was throwing it Vereen. I remember thinking - hey, that's a smart plan to over-come a top secondary - wish we could do that. Well, now we can.
It looks like the way the team is trying to set things up
Is to take care of DT, S and LB during FA (this just based on who they've expressed interest in) and then OL and pass rushers during the draft. They must like what's available for a future RT, G and pass rushing specialist. And I can't say I disagree with that approach based on available talent. Now they just have to land some FAs (I know it's early) to see it through.
I'm happy we have McAdoo instead of Gilbride. McAdoo's creativity makes me feel good about this.
I think this RB corps could be pretty damn good. Jennings flashed some bigtime skills early on, but he's not an every-down guy. Williams was ok but he has bigtime power so we know he has a standout skill. Vereen is a great receiver who just helped win a Super Bowl.
Add an OL and a WR and let's go. Our offense isn't that far away. Beckham is that good.
draft choice for a whole lot less, is that the rookie will sit on the bench for half the season or more, before TC is confident enough in him to protect Eli.
and we line up with Beckham, Cooper, Cruz and Vereen out of the backfield. Oh baby
That offense would be incredible, as long as the OL matures...just have to keep Eli upright and they'd light it up. Don't think Amari is falling to 9 though, but stranger things have happened.
A couple of Dallas fans with brain cells to rub together on Twitter (I know, they exist) said that they're afraid of Vereen on the Giants because we could run wheel routes into the open space that Odell forces the defense to vacate
draft choice for a whole lot less, is that the rookie will sit on the bench for half the season or more, before TC is confident enough in him to protect Eli.
Vereen will play in Game 1. I like it.
And you only get so many draft choices. Rookies cant fill all holes.
Reese goes for the kill shot and grabs Cooper/ White/Parker. The Oline could be addressed inn round 2, there will be lots of guards out there and who knows, a projected 1stround Tackle might be there at 40. OBJ Cruz
Randle 1 of the 3 guys and Vereen out of the backfield? Good Luck trying to slow down this group
To not think this is a great signing, is to forget
how important a "match-up nightmare" for LBs..Not since Tiki have we had one..
As for money, don't worry about it, nobody goes into cap hell..I think Dallas, a Bryant catch call away from the NFC Title game, is proof of that..So stop worrying..We will never be in cap hell, imo and will do what we need to do to be competitive..
Just let them sign who they have to sign in any way Abrams pulls it off and just hope that this year, we will get out of IR hell...
RE: The difference between signing Vereen for a lot of $$$ and a rookie

Vereen will play in Game 1. I like it.
And there are no guarantees of rookie success. This guy is a pro and he will make the team better.

Gives us the flexibility to really run different passing concepts. I would love for us to to do what teams did to Fewell. Clear out and throw to the RB and have him run. We can flex Vereen out and run screens as well. This is a solid signing.

When you have a RB that can catch short as smooth as this guy does you have all the tools to make a defense go crazy. We needed speed and now we have some.
Kudos to Reese on this signing.
Our others signing are more for depth and special teams which is needed too.
Doesn't look like we'll get that starting RT in UFA.
I'm still holding out hope though that somehow Amari Cooper falls and we still get him at #9. Cooper is a playmaker and will have a brilliant NFL career. In today's NFL, it is about playmakers and weapons. Load ELI up.
As long as our OL stays healthy, we should be a little better in year #2 with Richburg replacing JD Walton at Center (should be a huge upgrade) and Schwartz coming in at guard and Jerry to backup OG. All is not completely lost and you can't have everything.
If we do take Scherff in Round 1 lets hope he is a starting RT as a rookie and does better than Pugh. Pugh can go to the inside and hopefully flourish.
The Seahawks KNEW it was most likely going to Vereen in the SB and they STILL couldn't stop him..This is not a ho-hum signing, imo
Yeah some people don't realize his potential in this offense. And completely new element to the offense has just been created and it could turn out to be a bargain price.
@art_stapleton: Per @RavensInsider: Shane Vereen's base salary with Giants for 2015 is $1.25 million, all guaranteed. That, from where I sit, is a bargain.

Vereen might very well be our 2nd best offensive player next year.
We have mutual feelings on Vereen. Was saw his talent in NE but never used to his full potential largely in part to what I believe was BB holding his cards as close as possible. Even at $4 million a year I like it, if $1.5 million with some other bonuses ends up being the real deal than this could be a huge huge signing for us at very little cost.
After watching every Pats game last year the though of Vereen being audibled to the slot next to Beckham makes me very excited.

Very nice signing at that price
Sounds like a great deal!
I am excited about what he can do on 3rd downs; apparently a great pass blocker a la Tiki, can run routes like a WR, and excels at dumpoff passes after his chip block (if Eli ever learns how to throw them). Not only Eli, but the WRs and OL should be excited.
The only nagging question is that if I'm right, WHY DID BILL LET HIM GO at that price?
just let go of Revis and Browner. BB also likes to plug and play at RB which is why I don't bother looking at snap count to gauge how much he likes a particular RB.
Vereen won't be close to a 20 carry back but if he's getting 5 carries plus 5-7 targets a game, he's going to be a huge weapon for us.
Who cares. He just had his first season in his first brand new offense and had one of his best years of his career with an OC that loves to pass it everywhere. Why would you ignore 2014 and refer to 2005?
Eli hasn't had a threat to catch passes out of the backfield like this since Tiki.

1 years: $5.5 million
2 years: $8 million
3 years: $11.5 million
4 years: $16 million
I assume no UFA will ever play out the full contract. 8/2 or 11.5/3 dont upset me. Seems steep, but I dont consider Vereen a big difference maker. But its not back breaking.
Yeahhhhh, I doubt that. Vereen fills a hole. Cutting Jennings would simply open up another one. He's a high character, locker-room guy that was very effective when active. By lessening his load, it effectively improves his status in my eyes.
Interesting...Jennings would be about $562K in dead money and $2.2M in savings if he were cut after 6/1
We don't know the terms of the deal and FA doesn't technically start for another hour and 53 minutes. Let's pump the brakes on the Reese bashing.
Ummm, you really need to learn how contracts in the NFL work...
Just die
7 playoff games - 32 catches 324 yds
He can handle the blitz and knows how to catch the ball
Jennings gets hurt and all we have is a second year back and a rookie both of whom are still or will be learning how to pass protect in the nfl plus sv. Is an excellent receiver
Disagree. I think it shows their concern about Jennings holding up a whole season.

Tiki 2.0 he is not for all you bed wetters who think he may be, besides, who will open holes or pass protect in order to show this guy to be effective in any way ?

This is the NFL, every year, a month or 2 prior to the regular season, you can find a rotational RB and sign him to the roster and he can be an effective piece for a fraction of cost. I truly believe spending $16mill+ at a position that is not a dire need is foolish, I will shut my mouth once I start seeing the big bodies up front be signed.
If true this puts three significant rb. Last years pick is still cheap, but where are all these touches going to go.
If we're gonna spend that kind of money on a backup, would rather it be on some sort of decent ol, rather than the minimum wage dregs type of the past.

about the confidence the coaches have in depth behind Jennings and how dramatic the fall off was last year after his injury. I don't think this has something to do with Jennings and more to do with #2 on.

that is kind of the same thing.

You don't have to shut your mouth we all ignore trolls as a matter of course.
Obviously not saying OL doesnt need to improve, but that helps.

June 1st cut
You sure about that? I don't think they're going to cut Jennings.
Yeah I don't see Jennings getting cut in any scenario (unless he shredded his knee and no one told us). If he's healthy he's not going anywhere.

He is pass catching threat out of the backfield. Brady has targeted him 146 times the last 2 years.
You guys are missing a much bigger picture. Brady has time to step back, survey his options, then get the ball out. Eli has had no such luxury for 3 years now.

Details matter, if you actually pay attention. http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2013/03/giants_sign_brandon_myers_to_c.html - ( New Window )
Matt (thanks for the primer on him): "and worth every penny of it!" I hope the contract "friendliness" of Myers, if such is the case, is the only comparison hereafter made.
Seems like Vereen is going to make a linebacker get to a zone every time he's in the backfield. Good. Got Beckham doubled? Cruz too? I don't think so.
New England (Age 26)
Dynamic receiving running back (99 receptions over past two seasons) who is a matchup nightmare against linebackers and can line up at receiver. Has improved inside, but hes not an every-down back. Best fit: Giants. With Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams, Giants have two solid every-down backs, but they lack a receiving threat to make Ben McAdoos system really go.

Don't worry about the oline. Nobody else seems worried.
I asked always-upbeat Rashad Jennings about a potential Vereen signing: "I don't care who they bring in. This is my year."

Both will be crucial for us next year.
This is just what the doctor ordered, in my opinion.
Giants are not a team that just cuts people after 1 year due to injury. When they sign a player they 'commit' to them for a couple years at least and give them plenty of opportunity to produce.
Jennings is not getting cut. Look to beason as another example.
Yep, I'm enjoying all the belly-aching from the Pats' fans around here today.
Yeah, another March 2015. They're like cockroaches.

Well said Coach, I agree on all fronts.
Sounds like Shane Vereen's deal w/Giants will be in the 3-year, $12M range. Not 4 years. Guaranteed money will be about $5M, sources say.
Shane Vereen is not a guy you sign to be a feature back.

He's a role player and a good one. Nobody on the roster has his skillset, which is valued in this offense.
I would guess right about 2.5. 4 mill signing bonus, base salary of 1.5-2 mill
It's unlikely to find a RB in the draft who can run, catch AND block, right out of the gate.
I like the signing. If used right this threesome of backs could do some good things. ODB stretching the field with Cruz underneath, I hope, and now Vereen out of the backfield the whole field has to be covered. If Donnell makes strides this year it could be really fun to watch.
If the o-line holds up.

That's an odd fear considering all the ways they found to get Beckham the ball last year. And he was a rookie with no training camp.
I think you'll see Vereen lined up all over the field.
@JordanRaanan
RT @Matt_SuIlivan you think Jennings gets cut? >>> Let's get this out of the way. No! Would barely even save money.
Jordan Raanan - Twitter - ( New Window )
Or you could sign a minor free agent and essentially plug and play.
or 69 aka @rmlimodriver69
You named five players. Of 32 teams does that mean 27 GM's are failures in your eyes? Would you be happy if Reese signed Suh to 6 years 120 million?
Who would you cut to fit that number under the cap? I suggest you visit overthecap.com and try to find a way. When you're done, ask yourself if the team is better.
Great point Torrag, I was thinking about that earlier as well. I'm sure it's not lost on the FO that this guy has spent a lot of time operating out of the slot...

Vereen is not only depth for Jennings, but possess traits that Jennings does not have.
Fantastic signing at a great price.
Why would you prefer Helu?
Cooper is my favorite at 9. He is a precision receiver for our precision/timing offense. He and Eli will likely develop that Qb/WR bond very quickly.
Vereen will play in Game 1. I like it.

Love the dollar amount. In this era of inflated salaries this seems reasonable to me.
Vereen will play in Game 1. I like it.
And you only get so many draft choices. Rookies cant fill all holes.
Randle 1 of the 3 guys and Vereen out of the backfield? Good Luck trying to slow down this group
Vereen will play in Game 1. I like it.
And there are no guarantees of rookie success. This guy is a pro and he will make the team better.
[quote] We get some offensive lineman to fix the oline.. Makes no sense to get all these offensive weapons but have no Oline? [/quote
We have 4 starters returning.... how many more do you want?
THIS

If true, not a bad deal.

Very nice signing at that price
We have mutual feelings on Vereen. Was saw his talent in NE but never used to his full potential largely in part to what I believe was BB holding his cards as close as possible. Even at $4 million a year I like it, if $1.5 million with some other bonuses ends up being the real deal than this could be a huge huge signing for us at very little cost.
After watching every Pats game last year the though of Vereen being audibled to the slot next to Beckham makes me very excited.

Vereen won't be close to a 20 carry back but if he's getting 5 carries plus 5-7 targets a game, he's going to be a huge weapon for us.
Who cares. He just had his first season in his first brand new offense and had one of his best years of his career with an OC that loves to pass it everywhere. Why would you ignore 2014 and refer to 2005?
