Antrel Rolle on WFAN now with Joe and Evan. WOW.

FranknWeezer : 3/13/2015 12:22 pm
Dude is extremely emotional about leaving the Giants.

Hopefully somebody else can transcribe or provide more highlights.

Most impactful exchange so far was when he was asked, "If Reese came to you and asked, 'how do I replace you...what do I need to do?'?

Trel paused and had to catch himself a couple of times, holding back...said something to the effect of 'Nobody outside the team will ever have any idea how much the Giants asked of me. Every week, they would pull me aside and tell me what then need me to do for the team, defense. 100% of the time, I wouldn't hesitate, and I'd do whatever they asked of me.'
I absolutely believe that

They let him go test free agency without making an offer until the last minute.

It looks bad, and it looks like they didn't want him.

strong suits, media. The way he conducts himself, and the message he wants to put across. Good for him, the fact that the giants made a last ditch effort to lure him back was too little too late. I think we acted hastily.

You are right. As nice of a gesture it sounds, it also sounds like the Giants did not have a solid plan in place, came up short.
They play

I really hope that part about calling with a last minute offer
Mike from Ohio : 3/13/2015 12:43 pm : link
is not accurate. As mentioned above, that makes it seem like they gambled on him not leaving for more money and realized too late that he would.

If they wanted him at the price supposedly offered last minute, that should have been done upfront. The team should put a price on a player and then not go above that, but it sounds like - again if this is true - that they were caught flat footed.
Make up your minds.

Many here felt we overpaid for Trel(I didn't) and now we lowballed him..

It's a business..Can't use emotion here..If, as many here often have stated of late, he's lost it skill-wise, it's clear they didn't want him back..I wouldn't bet against him joining the Giants staff when he retires..

Because of Trel, we were able to get a ring in '11 ('12)..Because of the Giants, Trel was able to see every penny of his $37(?) million dollar contract
my fear is, the Giants felt they could get a comparable player
mfsd : 3/13/2015 12:47 pm : link
for less money, so let Antrel look elsewhere...and now we've missed out on the other good safeties available

Still holding out hope for Parker...

Making him a last minute contract offer does not imply they didn't want him, it implies the exact opposite. I don't think they offered him something they didn't want him to take.

This isn't about whether he should have been brought back, this is about them making no effort to bring him back, and then suddenly trying to make an offer, which looks like they had to jump to Plan B. Plan B didn't work, so what plan are we on now?
What a mistake to let this guy go

I liked the signing, one of the best college players I ever saw. Great Giant too.

Definitely see the argument for letting him walk but again it looks like we were indecisive and failed to implement our plan.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions, sometimes less is more and it is still early days but let's say we witness a third consecutive year of non-competitive football this free agency period is gonna be tough to swallow.

offer. Clearly, the Giants saw the interest in Rolle, and had set their internal price target for the guy. They must have realized they were going to lose him. They tried one last offer, probably in line with their original internal target, and ended up losing him to the Bears.

I'm on record saying I'd rather have kept Rolle for the money he got, but I wouldn't take this as the lack of a plan or a last minute panic offer. If you want to criticize anything, it's letting him go without making a bigger effort to re-sign him before FA started. Whether or not that's a mistake is yet to be seen, but that's really what has you upset.

EA, if we suffer devastating injuries for a 3rd straight year, I guarantee you we will be non-competitive, no matter what we do in FA, imo..

Trel's sign from above - ( New Window )
I wouldn't use the term 'upset'
Mike from Ohio : 3/13/2015 1:13 pm : link
but what concerns me is that it looks like the Giants didn't make their best offer to keep him until he was sitting in another team's building ready to sign a contract.

This is not the same as when you are competing for a FA that just became available. There were months to determine where negotiations would start, and most likely, what price was top dollar. It doesn't seem like the negotiation got dragged out and we were just outbid. It seems like they wanted him back bad enough to up their offer at the 11th hour. That tells me either a) they had another plan that did not come to fruition, necessitating that they raise the offer; or b) they wanted to keep him but did not offer him their best deal until it was all but entirely too late.

Again, this is all based on what little information we as fans have, and losing Rolle is likely not going to make or break the season, but it does give the appearance of a front office that is moving from contingency to contingency.

Micko : 3/13/2015 1:16 pm : link
What it means is that the Giants only wanted him back on the cheap & even then probably on a 1 year deal. You gotta hand it to the giants when it comes to letting guys walk. They rarely make a mistake in that department.
Mike - that's negotiating though
jcn56 : 3/13/2015 1:24 pm : link
If you give a player your best offer, it's trivial for them to go and have someone beat it, which ultimately drives up your price beyond where you want to go.

This is more risky, but it's obvious that Rolle didn't fall into the category of 'guy we'd really like to keep'. I think that's where the mistake was, they might have undervalued Rolle's contributions in 15-16 vs. what the FA market and draft have to offer at S, but I don't think they botched the negotiation.
BB
English Alaister : 3/13/2015 1:26 pm : link
I concur on the injuries...it has been unparalleled bad luck. However we did lose our first two games and were 3-4 at the bye.

It is not just injuries. This time needs to have a sense of urgency because Manning and Coughlin are not here forever. It needs to execute its plans flawlessly in the next 15 months if we are to get a third trophy under Eli.

I'm not advocating Reese get fired or lunacy like that. But I am worried that we are not as sharp as we need to be right now.

Fewell built his entire D around Rolle. It was one of the worst extended Defenses in franchise history. just like the IM of an underperforming mutual fund, it doesn't matter how many hours u put in or how hard u try.
if the fund doesn't earn, your out.
Good dude

It was great meeting him at the BBI trophy presentation. Should have let him finish his career here even if a step slower.
jcn - I disagree with that approach
Mike from Ohio : 3/13/2015 1:44 pm : link
I don't think your best offer should be held back until the guy is sitting in someone else's offices. Most teams are not letting you leave to shop that anywhere. All that offer will be good for then is to milk a couple more dollars from the bears.

The guy has been here for years and the best chance to keep him - if they wanted him - is when they were the only ones negotiating. If they let him go negotiate a similar deal with another team, then they negotiated very poorly.
Really stupid
arniefez : 3/13/2015 2:12 pm : link
to let a guy like Rolle leave when they have no replacement. Never missed a game in 5 years. If they had a younger guy ready to take over it would make sense. But very little the Giants do recently makes sense. Sorry to see him go even though he's not the player he was 5 years ago. But for the price the Bears paid really stupid.
Every Giant fan should listen to the interview

It's not like he agreed to stay and mentor for the vet minimum or not much more..The kids will have to learn from their coaches..Spags has been a Secondary coach as well as DC.. They'll learn from him and whomever they bring in eventually..It's a team thing
It was the Justin Tuck treatment more or less.
arcarsenal : 3/13/2015 2:20 pm : link
They just didn't want him back. They feel he's declining enough to not warrant a new multiyear deal.

It's hard and I am torn on it but from a football standpoint I think it was the right decision. And that's hard for me to admit because I really love the guy and think he meant a lot to this football team.
I have no idea what the Giants wanted
arniefez : 3/13/2015 2:21 pm : link
and I know for sure you have no idea what the Giants wanted. My guess is that if the Giants offered him what he took from the Bears before they made their offer he would have been "insulted". But there are ways to manage around player egos. They didn't do it for whatever reason.
I put him on roughly the same level

area junc : 3/13/2015 2:34 pm : link
who can they find to play at last year's level? lots of guys. they waited all year for him to do anything and he just never did.

when u consider the fact the entire D was built around him it makes the fact he didn't make any plays even more glaring. it was all set up for him to have huge success in Fewell's scheme. 2013 is what they were hoping for every year with Rolle.

that's why he's one of the only players who doesn't get the "Fewell excuse" from me. That was a system for him, built around him.
Thanks area
arniefez : 3/13/2015 2:37 pm : link
Rolle kind of made mention of that in a way in his interview. Right now though you might be the best safety option so when they bring in some new players based on what you're saying I'll look forward to the improvement. I expect the front 7 to improve because of the subtraction of the DC.

Funny, I think exactly the opposite: These are the type of players you need to get rid of on a team that wants to win. In a salary cap league, you cannot hold on to high-priced vets who are underperforming their contracts.

Reese et al did exactly the right thing with Rolle. But it's a screw-up if they don't figure out how to replace his leadership on and off the field while also upgrading the safety spot.
Not upset he won't be coming back.
SanFranNowNCGiantsFan : 3/13/2015 3:16 pm : link
Sometimes it's better to be a year too early than late.

What I'm upset about is devoid of talent we seemingly appear to be at safety. We have no clue with Cooper or Behre, though Cooper did look good before he got injured.

Our defense looks terrible at THIS moment. Obviously a lot can change & will change before the first kickoff, but I'm getting somewhat worried, especially since my confidence in Reese has been badly shaken in these last few years.

Letting Rolle go was potentially the biggest off season mistake..
EricJ : 3/13/2015 7:45 pm : link
and it is not because of his play. Sure, maybe his on field production vs what he was asking was a bit high. However, he plays every game. How many guys have we paid to sit in the ice tub?

The biggest thing is that this team totally lacks leadership. Rolle was IMO the best leader we have. His ability to teach the young guys how to prepare, how to act, how to be a pro will be missed. All of the intangibles that he brought to the team was worth what he was asking.

Right now, our defense is just a collection names on the back of a jersey with no heart. JPP is a guy that can make a few spectacular plays but is not a leader. We have no leader and no identity.
I can understand releasing Rolle.
idol-mind : 3/13/2015 8:05 pm : link
It sucks, but it's a business decision.

However, why the team is bringing back terrible players who have no business being in blue while also letting a guy like Rolle go is beyond me.
