but the other is wide open. If Cooper Taylor could stay healthy then I think the both of them could form a solid duo but Taylor can't make it out of the preseason healthy. They need to add a safety in the draft and add a veteran like Jeromy Miles or trade for Kenny Vaccaro. I do not want Stevie Brown back but I have a feeling his return is inevitable.
is more of a starter than Behre but both will likely start unless we get 2 safeties early in the draft or sign some one. I don't get why Behre is entitled to a spot but Taylor isn't. They are both 5th round picks. Taylor has actualy playing time. What is so different about them>?
In those highlights, Berhe reminds me of Bob Sanders
before he got hurt last preseason, Cooper Taylor was looking good.
True. Do you remember his injury, what it was? I'm hoping he's 100% and been practicing his conditioning program. It would be very important for him to participate in a full camp before the real games. I hope for once we get an injuries-derailed draft pick to turn it around and be productive & healthy.
Taylor is basically a rookie, and comes from a lower level of competition. Berhe was a fifth round pick, who played very little on defense last year. It could be a long season at the safety position.
ball that Will Hill had. I am not comparing him to Hill, but he finds the ball carrier and will put a hit on him. I have no idea if he can cover a lick, haven't seen enough to form an opinion
be the Gary Barbaro & Deron Cherry of this generation, playing for the Giants instead of the Chiefs. Taylor & Berhe have been in the program. This is their time.
I have hopes that both of them can fill the starting roles.
I don't know how anyone can say that Berhe can be a starter next year. It's baseless. I know coaches like him, but are we really supposed to be confident in him as a starter?
Well, so be it. But I still believe we need a veteran FS who can cover down the field. We were TORCHED down the middle all of last year cause our LB's and Safeties sucked in coverage.
If Behre and Taylor step up with Brown re-signed and rotating in & playing dime we will be OK I guess. Rookie mistakes early in new defense will hurt. And by rookie I mean first time starters in Behre and Taylor.
If the team just flat out admitted it was rebuilding and we started restocking the lines. We're signing mid 20s fringe type LBs, when is that a strategy? If Berhe can play, great, if Taylor can, great, but we have no evidence of either yet, why else was Reese ready to pay McCourty so much? Because we don't have a safety problem?
RE: Exactly when was Cooper Taylor looking good...
As I recall, he was leading the team in tackles in the preseason before he got hurt, and was primed for the "Deon Grant" role. He'd eclipsed everyone on the depth chart except for Rolle and Brown.
however, they are probably bot SS. Taylor might be the guy who could be a Free Safety with his height and athleticism. I would be perfectly ok with both of these guys starting, however, we still need 2 more safeties, as the Giants usually keep 4 and we need someone to help out with veteran savvy and leadership. My hope is that we make a deal to bring in one of the older Free Safeties as a mentor and depth. Still a few of this guys hanging out there.
All Taylor has done is look good in preseason games?
Berhe couldn't crack the lineup with Demps and Brown out there?
We may have to convert a corner to play safety....If there are no safeties out there, it's a possibility....guess what McCourty was before?
I know it is your shtick but I wouldn't use the fact that Behre didn't "crack" the starting lineup as a gauge in his ability. The whole Demps over Behre was questioned by beat writers who have more access to team practice than you. Stapleton just a couple of weeks ago called it a mistake. For whatever reason Fewell wanted to go down with vets if possible for the most part. He was DC and it was his call.
Reese has gone on record saying that he likes our young safeties. I'm sure they will get a vet or two to fill the void. But I think they are going to lean on the young guns at safety.
I mean, why draft them if you aren't going to play them...

Nothing to do with Schtick.....just like anyone else on this board, my opinions are based on what I see of games on TV and in highlight films.....there are writers and there are writers.....Do you really think, that Fewell would put players out there, that he didn't think were better than on his bench? If true, then his tenure here was one year too long...
It's not schtick to question the reasoning for having two fifth round draft picks, with no experience, being starting safeties for this team...
If Berhe can grow two inches since the combine, I believe he
Damarious Randall (FS - Arizona State)will be selected by the Giants in the 3-4 round. The kid still needs a year of coaching and weight room but he should be a good player by 2016.
There you go. Someday we will have 2 decent safeties.
That is not the answer. Reese can talk all he wants about how comfortable he is with the young safeties. The only difference between the safeties this year and 2009 is that we had a potential pro bowl safety in 2009 that got hurt in week 2. Its looking more and more like the pick will be landon Collins at no. 9

I dont think so.. The Giants simply dont value safeties that high.. You would have to be an extremely special talent at safety.. im talking Ed Reed, Sean Taylor... Collins is neither..
I cannot see any scenario where Collins will be the highest rated player on their board @ 9..
Maybe I don't know shit, but neither of those guys was Ed Reed.
Note for what I say below: I realize that the stated value of a contract is one thing, and the guaranteed money is another. I just don't have that data so I'm going to go by what I know. In the words of Billy Burr, "Don't listen to me...I don't read."
Ron Parker's new contract average annual cost to Kansas City: $5 million
Nat Berhe's average annual cost to NY Giants: $600,000
Nat Berhe doesn't have to be as good as Ron Parker to be the smart selection over signing Parker. He only has to be half as good. I'll say that again because that's a heavier statement than it seems at first: if Berhe is half the player Parker is, we're better off going with him than Parker.
As I move along as a football fan I am more greatly convinced that the difference in titles is determined by either the players at the very top of the pay scale or those at the very bottom. Tom Brady (on his 6th round rookie deal), David Tyree, Malcolm Butler, Kevin Jones, Malcolm Smith...all cheap and unknown players that had enormously important moments for champions. On the other side you have Eli, Peyton, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, Flacco, Brees.
I'm a few beers in so who knows if I make sense, but to me champs have seen their fates determined by high profile and high cost players, and cheap anonymous guys. Unless Ron Parker has a David Fulcher feel about him, is he really worth it?
As I recall, he was leading the team in tackles in the preseason before he got hurt, and was primed for the "Deon Grant" role. He'd eclipsed everyone on the depth chart except for Rolle and Brown.
Thanks Klaatu. I don't follow the pre-season as closely as others, but I do recall Corey Washington leading the NFL in touchdown catches too at some point.
What Washington did was nice, but a little flukey (kind of like that kid from the Seahawks in the Super Bowl). Anyway, the real WR star of the preseason was Marcus Harris.
Now, if you'd been paying closer attention, you would have seen that Taylor showed good speed, good awareness, and was a sure tackler. That's why he'd shot up the depth chart. You can knock the guy because he hasn't been able to stay healthy, but you can't knock his performance on the field. He may end up being the next Gerris Wilkinson, and that would be a shame, so I prefer to keep the snark to a minimum, and keep hope alive, too.
I think JR needs to have a few beers. I can see no reason to pay JPP 13.5 or 14 mil. Paying out those $ ham strings the entire D-Line. We could have signed 4or 5 good functional D- Line players for that much or less. Assuming JPP has a banner year, he can not have the same positive effect as 4 or 5 others. Watch JPP and SUH and see if either team make the playoffs or not. I know that neither team will make it on the backs of their defences. JPP may have a fab year but only if we play 10 or 12 games against poor teams.
yeah, doomster... every team is littered with RD5-7
Also Berhe is more a SS type which is the least valuable of the two safety spots.

He was. But he's been hurt in back to back seasons and I don't think he or Behre have the range to play center field.
I like Taylor as the third safety in the Deon Grant role.

It would be very important for him to participate in a full camp before the real games. I hope for once we get an injuries-derailed draft pick to turn it around and be productive & healthy.
To rely on Taylor is negligent. He can't stay healthy and there is too small of a sample of his play to warrant that
Can anyone name all the good defensive starters we have drafted from the fifth round on, in the last 10 years?
</sarcasm>
Has he paid his child support or is there a warrant on him?
Is this some kind of a joke?
You have any rumors?

We shall see, we shall see.
Why did he not see the field more? Did his injury occur before the Giants were officially done, which came pretty early in the season.
Is this some kind of a joke?

If he can't even get there because of health issues, then he isn't even worth calling a JAG.
But yes, I would love for Taylor to contribute at yet another position on the field we have bottom of the league talent.
