After the season, he thought he was unrestricted but missed being an unrestricted FA by 2 days.
Lions then made the mistake of giving him a low round tender which opens up the opportunity for the Giants to steal him.
Giants would not have to give up anything to sign Johnson. They should give it a shot and make an offer.
He's set to make 1.3mill next year. Give him a 3 year deal with some guaranteed cash and we have a valuable addition to the DL at a bargain
We need pass rush help. Johnson flashed plenty last year in the NFL. He's long and athletic. Can slide inside on passing downs or give us a quick outside rush.
Johnson Available - (

The Giants should think outside the box and make a nice offer to Johnson, a restricted free agent who was tendered at the original-round level by the Lions last week. He's a 27-year-old pure pass-rusher who could blossom under Steve Spagnuolo and outplay the value the Lions assigned to him with the tender. Detroit would have the right to match any offer, but it would be worth the Giants' time to find out whether they could steal him away. -- Dan Graziano

The current depth chart at S sure is ugly, isn't it? We need a guy like Miles more than Johnson.
JPP and Ayers are locks and you have to give strong consideration of Wynn and Moore as 2 more locks to make the squad. (I actually prefer Wynn over Moore-far better at playing the run).
If you sign George Johnson, is there room on the final roster for 5 DEs? Unlikely
They could always go 5 DE if the talent is there. DT right now is only Hankins, Jenkins, and Bromley.
Kid has loads of talent and just needs to be let loose.

That is a good point Mason. I forgot how much Webster thrived once Lewis was gone. Let's hope for the same thing from Moore.
Last year: 141 3rd down snaps for Johnson. 11 tackles. 4 sacks.
And consistently disruptive.
For comparison 3rd down play of:
Jerry Hughes: Past 2 years: 387 snaps, 14 tackles, 6 sacks
JPP: Past 2 years: 320, 16, 6.
George Johnson, DE, Detroit Lions
He is an outstanding natural pass-rusher who has length, speed, power and slipperiness in getting to the quarterback.
He also really likes Vereen.
Shane Vereen, RB, New England Patriots
He has speed, separation quickness, the ability to avoid defenders as a runner, really good hands and is obviously smart enough to master varied alignments as part of New England's pass package. He's also a better runner from scrimmage than most give him credit for, despite his size. He would be a good addition to almost any team because of his versatility.
Polian on FA - ( New Window )
If someone else out there wants him they will bump the price up and maybe we let it go. If nobody then its on Detroit.
At least he wont be dangling out there so if he is on JRs radar, then gone, JR plans forward accordingly.
That said, doesn't GJ have a reputation as sort of lazy, which is why his price is likely lower.
This team needs some sort of free agent that can improve our oline or dline. How this free agency period has gone I'm not sure how us fans would react if we have another swing and miss(Mccourty, Dan Williams,Brandon Graham)

I would be so shocked if this actually happened that I'd suspect my morning coffee of being laced with DMT.
The other DE position will likely be rotational with Moore and Ayers primarily. I hope Wynn really shows well in camp too.
Our DL is just not that deep or talented and if we have any major injuries we are likely in big trouble.
Johnson wouldn't be a bad move but we aren't likely to get him as the Lions would match.

Color me optimistic my friend but Moore is a strong candidate to emerge under the watch of our new DC.
Ayers was also our best DL the first half of last season. If he heals up, I think our DE rotation may not be better than most expect.
I still think JPP should play mostly on the left side and Moore would would move to the right. Then the Four Aces formation you can put them anywhere you want.
Adding Johnson would be a good move when you also look beyond this season.
and making those '5' looks more easy to implement. I mean, the guy is barely 250 lbs.
