Guy riding the bench behind a very good starter wants to spend a year on a team that will (probably) give him more reps so that he can establish value before committing to a long-term deal.
We'll have money to re-sign him next year if he works out for us. Otherwise I'd be disappointed in the one year deal. But this way Ellis can be guaranteed to earn a starter's salary if he performs well this year.
why one year? Say he does really well....see ya.....like Bennett
I agree. However, maybe it was Ellis's desire to have a one year deal (similar to Thurmond last season) to prove himself for a more lucrative longer term deal that we may not have been willing to make with him. If it could have been similar to Harris's deal, I would have taken that in a heartbeat.
next conversation moves to....does this eliminate Giants taking DT in round 1 or 2? Some will say yes, some will say no. Ellis won't be guaranteed a spot.
On a one year deal, gives the team a clear view of what he can do in a larger capacity. This immediately changes the composite of the interior d-line rotation and gives the LB's room to roam, occupies lineman for stunts and blitzes Spags will surely bring.
You've gotta consider that he might not have been willing to sign
JT Thomas 3 years, Castillo 3 years, Vereen 3 years, Dwayne Harris signed for 5 year what were the Giants thinking to long of deals... Ellis signs for 1 year... What were the Giants thinking to short of a deal. smh Can't win. I thought people wanted players on prove it deals?

I think the thing you missed is that Ellis has the potential to provide a much greater return than the other three.

Source confirms Kenrick Ellis in the fold for the #Giants. In line to possibly earn a starting role at DT.
Maybe the Giants offered a multi year and the PLAYER turned it down.. Maybe the PLAYER actually has a choice in what he wants to do.. you think ??? Maybe ????

No, BBI posters think he has more potential than the others. Thomas and Harris absolutely have some untapped potential.
Bennett didn't want to sign a longer deal believing that he can cash in for more money after the season. But in this case, the Giants won't be tight against the cap hoping to save money to sign Cruz and then Nicks which was the plan. So a good season from Elli can easily lead to him being back in blue for the long term
Unfortunately the BBI Mouthbreathers Society still isn't happy.
Love this guy..Wish it was for 2 years, but otoh, unlike the offensive positions, we'd probably have better luck extending him, then we had trying to hold on to Bennett for that kind of money(at the time)
Like him on the team and the signing. Wish it was longer than 1 year but the player probably wanted it that way to log more snaps and cash in next offseason.
It seems as of right now, Ellis has a much better chance to start the entire season and play very well compared to Harris or Thomas. Hence the disappointment in him being an UFA next offseason and signing a lucrative deal with another team.
If a guy with historical motivation problems wants a deal
most guys are either signing something long term & lucrative or short term. Given we don't seem to be shopping in the expensive aisles I'm sure Ellis prefers the upside of cashing in on a hypothetical big season vs a mid range contract that locks him in. Probably not the worst idea to have a 350 pounder on a 'prove it' deal in our end also.
Was buried on the depth chart with the Jets, but offers potential. Would it have been nice to have someone with his upside a little longer especially when his value was low, yes, but Ellis may not have wanted that on those terms. He may have preferred a one year deal to boost his value (see what Nick Fairley did with St. Louis)

But in this case, the Giants won't be tight against the cap hoping to save money to sign Cruz and then Nicks which was the plan. Quite likely. I'm guessing the Giants tried to sweeten the pot with extra guaranteed money (ala Harris, Thomas, and Casillas) that "overpaid" him based on his production to date, but that Ellis felt like a strong season in 2015 will get him much more money than the Giants were willing to offer in 2016.

Ohhh so because you think the player wanted a longer term deal and that he was worth a longer term deal we should of got him for one, but because you think the others aren't worth longer term deals and would have signed for only 1 year we should have gotten them for only 1.... JT Thomas will probably start for us. Harris will be a KR, PR, and Gunner plus 3-5 WR. Castillo is a very good ST player and back up. Vereen is a 3rd down difference maker. All are young and all can make plays. I am super happy with Ellis signing. I have said in many threads I think he can start, but I am not going to bitch about everything like I know how the negotiations happened! NONE OF YOU ARE A BETTER GM THAN JERRY REESE... I hope that helps. The egos on this board.
next conversation moves to....does this eliminate Giants taking DT in round 1 or 2? Some will say yes, some will say no. Ellis won't be guaranteed a spot.
No it does not...assuming Ellis comes in and pulls a Marcellus...then has multiple teams bidding and then leaves after 1 year the Giants will need to protect them selves...
The Giants don't draft by need they draft for impact....If the best available is player @9 is Shelton @9 so be it...and they will really be able to solidify an area of the team they have sucked in since Linval mad mistakenly not resigned...
For the draft right now...I have the following:
1) Beasley
2) White or Cooper
3) Shelton
4) Schareff
It's increasingly likely that Either Cooper or Shelton will be available when the Giants pick...
It seems as of right now, Ellis has a much better chance to start the entire season and play very well compared to Harris or Thomas. Hence the disappointment in him being an UFA next offseason and signing a lucrative deal with another team.
As of now, Thomas looks penciled in to start with Beason and Kennard (at least I hope so). I'm at least (cautiously) optimistic that he can play well, especially with a big dude like Ellis (hopefully) swallowing up the OL in front of him.
Bennett didn't want to sign a longer deal believing that he can cash in for more money after the season. But in this case, the Giants won't be tight against the cap hoping to save money to sign Cruz and then Nicks which was the plan. 1 MIL of Thomas, Casillas, and Harris' guaranteed money is in the form of this years base salary. It is future guarantee money that matters not total guarantee money. They weren't going to be cut this year no matter what so that 1 MIL guaranteed salary this year is to bump the total "guaranteed" money signed for.
Three-year starter who stuffs the run from tackle to tackle. Transferred from South Carolina. Has all the tools to play on the next level. Big and athletic. Explosive when he plays low and with leverage. Pushes the pocket and pressures the quarterback. Inconsistent in his play. Disappears at times. Long arms and big hands for the position. Question instincts and awareness. Was dominant in his league. Could stack and shed at the point of attack. Can neutralize a double team. Inconsistent use of hands to control and separate from blocker. A developmental nose tackle who is a size prospect with inconsistent skills. Has several red flags to clear up before a team may draft him. Excessive weight gain and endurance are two potential problems that will need to be addressed

I agree with you. I like all these deals and think they are worth the gambles. None of them involve cap crippling amounts of guaranteed money (partly due to the structure of said guarantees) if the players don't work out. And I'm confident that this time next year BBI will be calling Harris a "steal".
If you've seen him play, I can sort of understand why it's one year. He really has not played all that much and he did not look like Haloti Ngata when he did play.
He did not look terrible by any means but he did not come into games and have you thinking... "Whoa! Who's that guy??" lol (Yes, yes I watch the Jets... lol)
Now I'm not saying he won't turn out to be a great signing and player for us (fingers crossed) that completely excels in a DT role in a 4-3 and burn us on a one year prove it plan... but I think people are getting a little excited prematurely. There is not hardly a ton of evidence that he is going to come in and dominate. Personally I feel he will end up as a decent rotational player for us, that will push people like Patterson and maybe Kuhn off of the roster... nothing more nothing less.
We don't want him on our team, we NEED him on our team. Let's assume, with the other deals we made, we pushed for a longer contract but he said he's go visit other teams and see what he could do. If that assumption is correct, we locked him up for 2015 and will have first hand knowledge of his work under our new "Spag based" defensive line. If he does well we can put some extra money away for his renewal contract.
And keep in mind he came from New York going to New York..... family friendly. He won't necessarily bolt if we can pay him.
can't have everything. People were worried about this year and that's what this signing reflects. No one knows what was offered; Ellis could just have easily said he wants a short deal for 1 last payday after proving himself. If he puts any stock in himself, he's at the right age for a big contract if he plays well, kudos to him and I hope he ears a fat payday.
he was surplus to requirements on a very deep Jets DL but is a solid fat-guy DT who will really strengthen the run D. Hankins and Ellis are going to stop a lot of 1st down rushes to no gain or a gain of 1
I think this gives us some obvious and needed depth...
It's only a 1 year deal, which means Hankins/Bromley remain the only DTs under contract for 2016. And they can still easily upgrade the 5th DT spot (Kuhn/Patterson). And that's assuming Jenkins still has something left.
RE: RE: Not sure I'm in love with the 1 year deal in his case(27 years old)
Could it be possible they still intend to draft Shelton or Malcolm Brown and just give him a year to get acclimated? If they drop Patterson and Kuhn it would make sense.

Gets $1.65M, with $500K guaranteed RT @RapSheet Former #Jets DL Kenrick Ellis is signing a one-year deal with the #Giants today, source said
Hankins/Ellis actually gives us hope in that area. Along with a good run defender like JPP and a new DC in Spags, our DL has some real potential to improve against the run.

Via @AlbertBreer, Kenrick Ellis gets $1.65M, with $500K guaranteed in his one-year deal with the Giants.
I don't think DT was really being strongly considered at #9 to begin with. I think it's pass rusher or WR with OL being the backup if the guys they like at pass rusher/WR are gone.
It's the same thing over and over again with the 1 year deals
A guy who thinks he's worth more than anyone is willing to pay him, and doesn't want to take an incentive laden contract.
Instead, he gives a team a discount on one year, tries to play it up and cash in.
IMO, it works for both. If he's no good, we're only on the hook for this year and he's gone. If he's good, one good year isn't going to make him untouchable, and we probably give him the contract that he was looking for from the jump, maybe with a little added extra as a bonus for that one year.
Would have worked great had it not been for the cap constraint (remember we signed Cruz) when Bennett was a FA.

He has a good chance to outperform that deal. He wants opportunity, he now has it.
Much needed DT with talent to be something more than hes proven so far. Also, dont mind that its a 1 year deal.
If he proves to not be capable of being a starter, you didnt waste anything on him. If he does show out, you pay him next year when we have tons of salary cap room.
per Eric, or is Ellis so big they thought he was a second person?
If it is true probably wont here about it until later this afternoon...Usually visits are afternoon and dinner then next morning for Physical(if close to deal)
may move DT to a 2nd round need (I was heavily in favor of Shelton - despite some thinking he was a NT only). But I wonder if DT Michael Bennett might be a great addition in Rd 2 after Sherff or Collins in Rd 1.
Then - oh what the hell - you go:
Rd 3 - DE Nate Orchard (I do think he'll slide a bit) or Anthony Chickillo
Rd 4 - S Derron Johnson or the best regarded S at that point
Rd 5 - TE Nick O'Leary
Rd 6 - OG Shaq Mason
Rd 7 - CB Cam Thomas
Rd 7a - P Kyle Loomis
While the contract is fun to discuss, is it possible for you guys to qualify your comments a bit? You have NO idea what was offered and what was desired at either end, you know?
Casillas, but I like the Harris signing even though the money was a little out whack.
I just have a feeling that Harris will see more offensive snaps than he did in Dallas, especially if Cruz isn't ready.

Why is DT a need at all? Hankins is a young stud, we drafted Bromley in the 3rd...Now you want to draft another DT.
The revolving door at DT needs to stop at some point.
We really didn't have any other great run stuffers at that position other than Hank. If Hank went down, we'd really be up the river without a paddle.
Eric wrote a piece a while ago on the difficulties of assembling a modern defense. I think bringing in a lot of specialists is the key and that's what we are doing. Last year we found out Herz and Kennard were pretty good run thumpers. We've now got some linebackers that can cover. We've got some defensive tackles that can pass rush, and now we've got some defensive tackles that can all out stop the run.

The revolving door at DT needs to stop at some point.
It's a need because they only have 2 guys signed for 2016 and usually go 4, if not 5, guys deep at the position during the year. That said, if Bromley takes a step forward, then it's likely not a rd 1-2 need.
I was just surprised when other DTs were discussed, i never heard his name come up
Yeah he really did not play that much for the Jets. Pretty much strictly a backup to their starting NT. Plenty of reason for optimism in my view, based on his size and the role he would play here in a 4-3... but really not a ton of evidence that he will even beat out some other guys on the roster unfortunately. Let's hope we struck gold though! I have been looking for a bigger guy to plug in at DT since Gabe Watkins dominated the senior bowl! lol
and I'm supposed to care why 5 years later? You say he's slow, if there is 1 position on the field( if he is in fact slow) that I don't care is run stuffing DT. If he has to chase down backs 15 yards downfield we are screwed anyway
Liked Ellis since his rookie season. Sounds like the Giants wanted more years and it was Ellis who wanted the 1 year deal. Works out for him to get more snaps and gets to stay in his house and look to get a bigger contract next season. Giants will have a lot of cap space which I am sure him and agent are very aware of as well.
Couldn't the Giants have kept control of him for another year with a 2-year contract by offering a big roster bonus if he was on the roster in March 2016 along with a nominal 2016 salary?
Are there rules or cap implications that prevent that from happening?
If Ellis and a draft pick can unseat Patterson and Kuhn, it's all the better moving forward. Jenkins is probably safe as they could well need him to give DE reps this season, given the thin state at DE. Patterson won't be back, Kuhn probably slides to inactive.
Not sure if posted already, but PFF says he's a "secret superstar"
One thing that has been a consistent for the Jets under Rex Ryan is a defensive line that can stop the run. In his first year he had Shaun Ellis, Calvin Pace, Marques Douglas, Sione Pouha, Mike Devito, and Kris Jenkins all with a positive grade against the run.
As the years have gone on most of those players have left the team. This has left the Jets investing heavily in the position including several recent first-round draft picks. Among the Jets starting linemen, two of them made our Top 100 and another just missed the cut. While a lot of the reason the line is so good is due to those three starters, another reason for it is their depth. With starters like that, its easy to miss just how dominant Kenrick Ellis was at stopping the run.
lol...I'm hoping there is some sarcasm there...You cant be serious right...These moves helped us go from mediocre to slightly mediocre...Also, 1 year?? Oh Jerry your a genius...

You are fucking awful - here's hoping you and Emlen's Gremlins choke while 69ing each other.
Contracts are negotiated - two parties - Ellis apparently thinks the way to maximize his earnings (you know, his goal) is to go some place to play, play well and see what next year's market will bear. It's completely reasonable, and from what we have seen this year, the player's original team has the inside track on signing the player.
This is a really easy deal to get on the right side of and like, but you managed to screw it up.

The Giants sign several young up and coming players who should start out as depth and people complain because they want the big name expensive players. They complain because these players were signed for too long or too much money even though most have little guaranteed money in their deals. Now Reese signs another young player who is likely to start to a 1 year deal for very little money and people are complaining because it's only for 1 year!

+1... Some of these posters are making this site unbearable... Seriously why can't we have an ignore feature? Why is that such a big deal. I don't want to sift through the few bad posters that keep posting the same crap here to read the people I like and respect.
but since it is only a 1 year deal he is going to work his ass off to get in shape and to have a big season in order to secure a lucrative long term deal next offseason. I hope he has a great year even if he bolts because that means the Giants will get a comp pick for him.

can't fathom what thought process leads to any feeling on this signing more negative than mild indifference.
If he is cut tomorrow, it doesn't matter....zero downside and the best case is that we have to figure out a way to pay him next year...signing players is about risk/reward...
With the 1 year, Giants have the money next off season, he wanted the opportunity to START, he wants to show how good he is, and he will get that chance, it is good for the Giants and good for Ellis. This is the best signing of the off season, by far.
was Revis, who won a SB being a shut down corner...
Holy shit do you realize 10 years ago the Giants signed Kareem McKenzie to a contract that solidified the OL for years? Also Derrick Ward was a great running back for the Giants for several years and the Giants got him for nothing.

Not for nothing but I believe the Pats had Brandon Browner, Mcourtey and Revis last year and a helluva defense. Also I'd like to mention that Revis was horrible in Tampa and was burnt on a regular basis.
Mackenzie, was a good tackle and Weatherford is a punter. ALL PRO AND JETS rarely if ever are uttered in the same sentence.
you are a fool. Who was the last Jet to do anything Curtis Martin??? I guess you haven't watched them in a decade because they have had several good to great players like Revis, Cromartie, Muhammad Wilkerson, Richardson, Mangold, Ferguson, David Harris, etc.

i am talking about the posters who go out of there way to derail threads....Negativity doesnt make you a troll...

For every "diamond" Reese finds there are 10 other bums he either signed or drafted. I'm sorry you have your head so far up your a$$ you cant see the light. Yes !!!! your right : Because with the exception of Revis every single one of those players had done wonders for a superbly horrible Jets team. Please. All the supposed talent on that team and Fat Rex couldn't do squat. Look at the Jets. They are god awful. Period.
I would have also been good with more than one year
1st I think they guard themselves if he gets injured this year (Or he'll pull a Walther Thurmond). Otherwise, He'll play for his next contract and establish his value.
Gives them some draft flexibility. I think they will pick a DE high and DT towards the middle to lower rounds in case Ellis walks to a bigger contract.
If he likes NY and stays healthy they can offer him more money next year after seeing what he can do.
downside, he can price his self out of the Giants range next year. Not as worried about this if he likes Ny and Ny likes him at the end of the year.
RE: I would have also been good with more than one year
A 3-4 year incentive laden contract with bonuses, escalators etc. Unless Ellis only wanted 1 year to prove it and see if he could strike it rich next year. That's possible too.

Have you looked at the performance against the run last season? In this league you have to stop the run to be successful. The ideal is to have an effective rotation. Present roster is somewhat lacking. Patterson and Kuhn is not the answer. IMHO
As others have said, the Giants probably offered a multi year deal, but Ellis, like Thurmond, wants to hit FA again next year. He knows he's got a good chance of having a very productive year with the Giants. Don't blame him a bit. Welcome aboard Mr. Ellis.
you are a fool. Who was the last Jet to do anything Curtis Martin??? I guess you haven't watched them in a decade because they have had several good to great players like Revis, Cromartie, Muhammad Wilkerson, Richardson, Mangold, Ferguson, David Harris, etc.
Yes !!!! your right : Because with the exception of Revis every single one of those players had done wonders for a superbly horrible Jets team. Please. All the supposed talent on that team and Fat Rex couldn't do squat. Look at the Jets. They are god awful. Period.
Brilliant logic so since the Jets were a bad team all their players are bad! Yeah I guess Odell Beckham sucks because the Giants were 6-10 last season.
Fat Rex get them to the AFC Championship his first 2 years
Ellis' biggest contribution will be to tie up blockers which is a huge benefit to the defense because he will keep the OL off of the linebackers. This is huge since LB's such as Beason, Thomas, Casillas are undersized and this will free them up to make plays.
I am a run-stopper and I like doing it, Ellis said. That is the strength of my game. I look forward to helping the Giants get back to their glory.
By default, thats who I am. Im a journeyman. I come in and do my job. You dont get much recognition for it, but you get the job done and it helps out the team. Ill take on the double-teams and take on the work no one else wants to do. Its just who I am. I take pride in what I do, which is being a big man in the middle and try to make sure no one runs the ball.
Maybe the Giants offered a multi year and the PLAYER turned it down.. Maybe the PLAYER actually has a choice in what he wants to do.. you think ??? Maybe ????
Maybe it's how you manage the cap under the 89% rule. Still can't figure how you manage it if you cut players, use 89% of the cap ith true dollars and keep your dead money/air only chewing up the remaining 11% without going over.
if he doesn't see a number of Jets that the Giants would be thrilled to have, he is obviously just trolling or too stupid to be taken seriously.
Your right, the Jets are loaded with talent, so much that I wish I could trade every bum on this team for one. Congratulations !!!
Who said they were loaded with talent you idiot? They have one of the best CB's in football and they also have the best 3-4 DE not named Watt or Campbell and another great young DL in Sheldon Richardson who received several All-pro votes for his play last season. I think the Giants would be happy with Ferguson and Mangold right about now.

You wish in your wildest dreams the Jets had a stud star on their team like Beckham Jr. If it wasn't for Beckham JR the Gmen may not have won a game last year. Who on the Jets had the same impact on that team? Noone. In fact most Jets fans couldnt wait for the season to be over.
In fact your best player Revis wasn't even on your team last year and I cant't wait to see him and his overblown ego and paycheck get toasted this year.
that all the Jets players suck because they were a terrible team so I mentioned that by your brilliant logic Beckham must suck because the Giants were a bad team. Also the Giants did win a couple of games without Beckham since he missed the first 4 games of the season but I know your not a big fan or facts or reason.
except for the one year deal which I think we are all sick of. On the flip side, it seems like we might have more cap space next year so if he performs as hoped it might be mor possible for the team to keep him unlike Bennett.
stop responding to these guys... It ruins a good thread. I know they say stupid stuff that makes you want to go dude you are an idiot and then explain why what he posted is wrong, but that is what he wants and it ruins a good thread for everyone. IGNORE HIM
The Giants like to redshirt their rookie DT's if they can (Joseph, Hankins for half a year, Bromley). This allows the Giants to do that with a mid-round pick (3-5) and have him contribute if Ellis leaves.
Ideally it is longer but the key for a one year deal is to bring him in and see if he fits. If he fits, you can always extend him during the year before he hits free agency. That scenario hasn't worked out well for a couple recent guys.
Bennett was a classic underachiever who made it big. The guy was quirky though. I think the Giants were reluctant to extend him halfway through the year and then he was outside their price range.
Thurmond played 2-3 games. There was no reason to extend him and he left.
If Ellis comes to camp in great shape, seems to fit in, embraces the culture and plays well out of the gate, they probably try to do something.
We really need to focus on our potential internal free agents for 2016. I'd rather use our money wisely on that than to overspend for schlock.
in McAdoo's offense, huge. I like Ellis, I like Harris, the other guys, I don't know much about but that Jag LB was a pain in the ass when we played them, seems like he was in on every play
i am talking about the posters who go out of there way to derail threads....Negativity doesnt make you a troll
Posters like Floyd the Barker, Jripper, Speak...those are trolls
* How about I'm a pissed off Giants fan who absolutely hates seeing his beloved team turned into a smoking pile of crap by a GM who clearly doesn't have his pulse on the team or understand that you can't win without talent, clearly something the Giants are lacking at almost every key position. For every "diamond" Reese finds there are 10 other bums he either signed or drafted. I'm sorry you have your head so far up your a$$ you cant see the light. Also, because your so intelligent to know what a troll is you get your sticker for your refrigerator. Now get your shine box !!!

Ummm the Giants won two games before Beckham got on the field. Don't let that stop you though. Lol.
I think Ellis is a great signing. This guy is a very good
run stopper in his prime. Jripper you are all wrong in your analysis. I actually like these depth signings because they are already proven depth that can contribute.
I'm thrilled with this pick up. He fills an important role as a run stopper. He wasn't expensive. As a run stopper he helps the defense by providing us with 3rd and long, so we can unleash the Kraken. He also won't affect who we draft in the first round, but he will alleviate our concern about the DL if we don't draft a DL in the first round because we may be just fine with Bromley, who isn't proven yet, but then neither was Hankins until he played his second year. Sure, we didn't get Suh, but between this guy and Bromley, we may be able to get the same or similar efect at a more sensible price. If he proves to be mediocre, he gets cut. If he proves he is worthy, he deserves to get paid his due.

Just wondering, where did this reputation as a run stopper come from that everyone is proclaiming when he had 8 tackles last year for the Jets? I would be thrilled if true but somehow I don't believe the numbers support such a claim.
The Jets fans on their message boards are all saying he should have been brought back for the price Reese got him for. They really liked Ellis and thought he was a starting caliber player but couldn't get PT when Wilkerson and Richardson are great DL in front of him

A good NT doesn't necessarily have to have numbers, as long as he's keeping his LB's clean for them to get the #s

Do you watch football? 3-4 Nose tackles rarely rack up tackles. Their job is to hold their ground and tie up the center and guard in order to free up the linebackers to make the play. Vince Wilfork had 23 solo tackles last season. Dan Williams of Arizona had only 21 solo tackles and 32 tackles total. The Steelers Steve McLendon only had 21 total tackles with only 12 solo. Sean Lissemore of the Chargers only had 12 solo tackles and etc. I know that that facts don't mean anything to you anyway.
Love it. IMHO this move is the first type of move which on paper is a difference making move at the LOS. It also takes away fear of the need for so much need based drafting. while the other moves were interesting this is the first one where I am excited about control of LOS.
I still think that we need a DT and DE, but this sure helps.
Perhaps if we land a guy like Preston Smith in the 2nd he could slide inside in a NASCAR package on 3rd and long, though, which would offset the need for a DT.

I am wondering what kind of defense Spags implements.. I suspect its a 4-3 under which gives them some flexibility in Pass rushers... It might not be a pure 4-3 DE.. and I dont know how much we are going to see NASCAR.. or even if we will see it..
I am expecting a different scheme..
Hard to know, blueblood, but I do expect it to be an attacking
Is he depth behind Hankins or can he really push Jenkins off the field?
Kuhn had a better year than he did last year, so I dunno what that tells you. They may give him Kuhns spot, but I doubt he can take it outright. That $500,000 in guaranteed money may mean they are committed to him, though. His stats are nothing special, and Kuhn is quite a bit faster, and a little stronger.Still, I think Kuhn is gone...
a good depth signing, guy has off-field baggage, not that it should matter, but worth mentioning and has an ability to be hurt often, a co-worker who is a die hard Jet fan told me he has been a disappointment since being drafted and its not just bc you cant crack Wilkinson/Richardson ... I think this is why the 1year deal was made ...
Ellis's off-field problems are many years behind him.
Jets have always used him as a NT, in recent years subbing in for Damon Harrison and getting significant time. He never was in competition with Wilkinson/Richardson and certainly does not possess their quickness although he is quite athletic for a huge man. He is certainly more athletic than the current version of Shelton.
This is about eventual money. Ellis and his agent do not want him to be always playing second fiddle to "Snacks."
"Snacks" could be the best NT in the League (not making that claim, but it cannot be dismissed out of hand) and then it becomes possible that Ellis is in the running for second best NT in the League.

Former #Jets DL Kenrick Ellis is signing a one-year deal with the #Giants today, source said. Finalizing now.
BOOM goes the Dynamite..
I agree. However, maybe it was Ellis's desire to have a one year deal (similar to Thurmond last season) to prove himself for a more lucrative longer term deal that we may not have been willing to make with him. If it could have been similar to Harris's deal, I would have taken that in a heartbeat.
Yep, my first thought - 1 year deal, smh
Seems like the special teamers we signed got more.
Yes. See Bennet and Thurmond.
I think the thing you missed is that Ellis has the potential to provide a much greater return than the other three.
Unfortunately the BBI Mouthbreathers Society still isn't happy.
Source confirms Kenrick Ellis in the fold for the #Giants. In line to possibly earn a starting role at DT.

No, BBI posters think he has more potential than the others. Thomas and Harris absolutely have some untapped potential.
and the player said.. NO...
Unfortunately the BBI Mouthbreathers Society still isn't happy.
The only complaints I've seen had to do with the terms.
Then everyone would be claiming they "overpaid" for another team's backup!
Oh really? Because you sound like you were sitting at the table negotiating the deal since you find it so hard to believe.
Maybe Ellis wanted a prove-it deal. Maybe the Giants offered 2 or 3 years.
Fuckin hell I swear some people just NEED something to bitch about.
Unfortunately the BBI Mouthbreathers Society still isn't happy.
Love this guy..Wish it was for 2 years, but otoh, unlike the offensive positions, we'd probably have better luck extending him, then we had trying to hold on to Bennett for that kind of money(at the time)
Throw in a healthy Beason....which is a big IF of course.
Gotta say, DT looks promising.
Hankins, Jenkins, Bromley, Ellis.
>"TOO SHORT A CONTRACT!"

I hope this guy comes in here and is a huge difference maker and he proves he's worth a multi-year deal.
Shit - you're looking at a 3rd round pick in his fifth year with very little wear and tear. Good size and athleticism - MAKE him prove himself.
I like it.

Hardly. Try again David.
As of now, Thomas looks penciled in to start with Beason and Kennard (at least I hope so). I'm at least (cautiously) optimistic that he can play well, especially with a big dude like Ellis (hopefully) swallowing up the OL in front of him.
Sometimes the player would rather have a 1 year deal...

So true
You sign him short term
Oh he's going somewhere else next season

Bennett didn't want to sign a longer deal believing that he can cash in for more money after the season.
They're not going to carry 4-5 young guys at one position. They like subbing in veteran pickups.
You sign him short term
Oh he's going somewhere else next season
Lol. Exactly. The "I need to see the numbers." crowd.
You have no fucking idea what the numbers mean. Neither do I. Enjoy the game.

Giants Sign DT Kenrick Ellis; OL James Brewer Visits Jets - ( New Window )
And keep in mind he came from New York going to New York..... family friendly. He won't necessarily bolt if we can pay him.
What is the consensus on Jenkins and his usefulness at this point? Obviously, he's past his prime. But has his game deteriorated more than that?
I think now, the Giants can focus in on WR, DE, or LB with that first pick.
Safety....just nothing there to warrant a pick at nine overall.

Left out OT, of course.
He gets mature, and picks up the system, he gets re-upped.
The Ellis deal is one year, $1.65 Million. 500K guaranteed. #Giants

What do you guys think?
Yes. See Bennet and Thurmond.
Could it be possible they still intend to draft Shelton or Malcolm Brown and just give him a year to get acclimated? If they drop Patterson and Kuhn it would make sense.

WE HAD THE WORST RUN DEFENSE IN FOOTBALL.
Hankins/Ellis actually gives us hope in that area. Along with a good run defender like JPP and a new DC in Spags, our DL has some real potential to improve against the run.
Really happy to have two big guys in the middle.
Via @AlbertBreer, Kenrick Ellis gets $1.65M, with $500K guaranteed in his one-year deal with the Giants.
Or the D guy at 9 and the OL at 40.
Via @AlbertBreer, Kenrick Ellis gets $1.65M, with $500K guaranteed in his one-year deal with the Giants.
He has a good chance to outperform that deal. He wants opportunity, he now has it.
This is a potentially strong four:
Hankins, Jenkins, Bromley, Ellis
Kudos to FO.
Now onto the others.
Yes, because we have been getting destroyed in the trenches and this helps.
a need, upside, and a good player.
expect the first pick to be Iowa OT and we are on our way to having some back bone again
If he proves to not be capable of being a starter, you didnt waste anything on him. If he does show out, you pay him next year when we have tons of salary cap room.
Giants are much more athletic at LB with Thomas Beason and Kennard...
If it is true probably wont here about it until later this afternoon...Usually visits are afternoon and dinner then next morning for Physical(if close to deal)
Jenkins is a pass-rusher. Ellis is a run-stopper.
Then - oh what the hell - you go:
Rd 3 - DE Nate Orchard (I do think he'll slide a bit) or Anthony Chickillo
Rd 4 - S Derron Johnson or the best regarded S at that point
Rd 5 - TE Nick O'Leary
Rd 6 - OG Shaq Mason
Rd 7 - CB Cam Thomas
Rd 7a - P Kyle Loomis
Not exactly the boxes your check when considering Giant signings.
And IMO, he moved very slowly on the field as a Jet.

No, I didn't know..
I just have a feeling that Harris will see more offensive snaps than he did in Dallas, especially if Cruz isn't ready.

Good. We need a little nasty on this defense.
He was signed pretty cheaply...less than any of the other flyers we took on young players during this free agency phase.
Is it a concern he wasn't able to win a starting job? Yes to a degree but the Jets D-line is talented.

Why is DT a need at all? Hankins is a young stud, we drafted Bromley in the 3rd...Now you want to draft another DT.
The revolving door at DT needs to stop at some point.
I *think* we'll be ok.

may move DT to a 2nd round need (I was heavily in favor of Shelton - despite some thinking he was a NT only). But I wonder if DT Michael Bennett might be a great addition in Rd 2 after Sherff or Collins in Rd 1.

It's a need because they only have 2 guys signed for 2016 and usually go 4, if not 5, guys deep at the position during the year. That said, if Bromley takes a step forward, then it's likely not a rd 1-2 need.
I have been looking for a bigger guy to plug in at DT since Gabe Watkins dominated the senior bowl! lol
This should be easy Draft Selection now for a DE'
This should be easy Draft Selection now for a DE'
Are there rules or cap implications that prevent that from happening?
As the years have gone on most of those players have left the team. This has left the Jets investing heavily in the position including several recent first-round draft picks. Among the Jets starting linemen, two of them made our Top 100 and another just missed the cut. While a lot of the reason the line is so good is due to those three starters, another reason for it is their depth. With starters like that, its easy to miss just how dominant Kenrick Ellis was at stopping the run.
Secret Superstars 2014: Jets - ( New Window )
lol...I'm hoping there is some sarcasm there...You cant be serious right...These moves helped us go from mediocre to slightly mediocre...Also, 1 year?? Oh Jerry your a genius...
Thurmond was offered a 3 year deal, he chose to take a 1 year deal...
Players at this point in free agency would rather thave a 1 year prove it deal rather than a 2 year deal that is cheap...
Obviously if they get a good offfer for a long term deal they will take it but at this point not a lot of money going around...

Someone did mention him not that long ago. Can't remember who it was, though. Might've been KWALL.
Ya. Its not the show me contract, its the show the league and walk contract.
Let's see on two things:
1. Can he stay healthy?
2. IF he can stay healthy, how much can he contribute?
I am kind of glad it's 1 year. Show me deal. Show me you can stay healthy and then show me you can contribute.
Well, if true, I'm glad it's the run-stuffer that is heavy legged..:)

* Please wake me up when Reese actually signs someone whose going to make in impact. It's not bad enough that we've signed a bunch of unproven recycled garbage but on top of it you sign a Jet. Its a freaking curse. Who was the last ex Jet who did anything?? Curtis Martin...lol...Jerry reaching with his budget shopping again...Worst Giants offseason in years...
He is a very good run defender... Did you not see our run Def last year?
Then there's McKenzie who anchored maybe the best offensive line the Giants have ever had.
And Derrick Ward who ran for 1100 yards.
+1... Some of these posters are making this site unbearable... Seriously why can't we have an ignore feature? Why is that such a big deal. I don't want to sift through the few bad posters that keep posting the same crap here to read the people I like and respect.

Umm Kareem Mckenzie was a pretty good signing...
Weatherford has been a pretty good Punter
Your right...Im sorry...two good players every 15 years isn't bad...
If he is cut tomorrow, it doesn't matter....zero downside and the best case is that we have to figure out a way to pay him next year...signing players is about risk/reward...
Holy shit do you realize 10 years ago the Giants signed Kareem McKenzie to a contract that solidified the OL for years? Also Derrick Ward was a great running back for the Giants for several years and the Giants got him for nothing.
New Giants DT Kenrick Ellis: I am a run-stopper and I like doing it."
More Ellis: "(Run stopping) is the strength of my game. I look forward to helping the Giants get back to their glory."

And more Kenrick Ellis: "I take pride in what I do, which is being a big man in the middle and try to make sure no one runs the ball.

Mackenzie, was a good tackle and Weatherford is a punter. ALL PRO AND JETS rarely if ever are uttered in the same sentence.
I think he's Eric's gardener.

Derrick Ward was pretty good with the Giants.. so um.. yeah..
Yes !!!! your right : Because with the exception of Revis every single one of those players had done wonders for a superbly horrible Jets team. Please. All the supposed talent on that team and Fat Rex couldn't do squat. Look at the Jets. They are god awful. Period.
A 3-4 year incentive laden contract with bonuses, escalators etc. Unless Ellis only wanted 1 year to prove it and see if he could strike it rich next year. That's possible too.
Have the trolls multiplying like rabbits.
If Eric won't ban 'em
While flames they are fannin',
Then, hey, Bold Ruler, LET 'EM HAVE IT!

may move DT to a 2nd round need (I was heavily in favor of Shelton - despite some thinking he was a NT only).
Why is DT a need at all? Hankins is a young stud, we drafted Bromley in the 3rd...Now you want to draft another DT.
The revolving door at DT needs to stop at some point.

Your right, the Jets are loaded with talent, so much that I wish I could trade every bum on this team for one. Congratulations !!!

I'll take B.

You're not a good troll. You're too easy.
Did he just drop the mike for us?
It is only the trolls (like jripper420) who try and spoil it for others
I'm excited to see the fronts Spags will use with the ability to stick a legit NT out there.
Impossible... havent you gotten the memo that Reese sucks horribly ??

Ummm the Giants won two games before Beckham got on the field. Don't let that stop you though. Lol.
They really liked Ellis and thought he was a starting caliber player but couldn't get PT when Wilkerson and Richardson are great DL in front of him
Quote:

If wining and dining was involved, I'm guessing it's not for the league minimum.
1.65 million.Another overpay to my mind.

My God...are you really gonna complain about a one year 1.6 million dollar deal? They should have saved 400 K?
This contract obsession has the passed the point of ridiculousness.
Throw in a healthy Beason....which is a big IF of course.
Mmmmmmm. Beefy.
