very active against us for whatever it's worth.
We all assumed the Cowboys defense would suck last year

Selvie was one of the guys who proved to be better than expected for them in 2014

Another guy in that 26-28 age range we seem to be focusing on.

More on Selvie from Ranaan article

Here's what Selvie would bring to the table for the Giants.

A solid run-stuffing defensive end ‐ This is what the Giants tried to get out of Kiwanuka last year, although the results weren't very good. Selvie finished 14th among all 4-3 defensive ends (according to Pro Football Focus) with a +6.1 grade against the run. That would help the league's 30th-ranked run defense. Kiwanuka finished at -9.4.

A veteran with a proven track record ‐ Selvie has played in 68 career games. He's finished with a positive PFF grade against the run each of the past three years. The Giants know what they're getting if he signs a deal.

A quality complement to Robert Ayers/Damontre Moore ‐ Right now, Moore and Ayers are atop the depth chart at left defensive end. Developmental prospect Kerry Wynn is also in the mix. But Ayers and Moore are significantly better at rushing the passer. Selvie would provide a different dimension to the group.

Strong work ethic ‐ A term often used to describe Selvie is "high motor." He makes plays because he never gives up on plays and chases down everything. Effort isn't something the Giants will likely have to worry about if he's added to the mix.

I also think he has a bit of pass rush upside as 7 sacks albeit in 2013 is not a bad number.
Seems like run stopping would be well addressed

if the starting DL is Pierre-Paul-Hankins-Ellis-Selvie.

No idea if selvie would be the starter, but that would make Ayers, Wynn, and Moore situational pass rushers along with Jenkins.

Q: How much did (George) Selvie, on the other side, how much did that benefit him?

A: We will talk about Selvie later. This kid is a great player. Selvie --- not much; not much. This kid helped Selvie.

Q: Then how do you know he won't - two years ago people were talking about Selvie kind of how there were talking about Jason PP now. How do you know he is not going to be another Selvie?

A: They are totally different players; totally different skill set; totally different athletic ability. The media was talking about Selvie - the guy had a tremendous sophomore year. He had 15 sacks or so. But his production has gone down and that is where you evaluate their skill set; their athletic ability; the height, weight, speed, the quickness, the strength, those things.

On the whole, Ross wasn't wrong. Selvie wasn't and isn't a great player, not in the class that JPP was. However, Selvie has proven to be a solid if unspectacular NFL player, which is more than Ross seemed to be giving him credit for coming out of college.

First down and short yardage deployment vs. the stronger running teams. Don't. Spags will have the ability to mix and match for ideal match-ups with the depth Reese is gathering.
I must admit

Absolutely, injuries have hurt badly, the Wilson pick, which was a controversial pick to begin with, really hurt, to get nothing out of your first round pick sets an organization back. If that first rounder is a QB, and hopefully a franchise QB, that can kill an organization, we need only look at the Jets, first they were unable to develop and/or surround Sanchez to continue with him, which actually started out pretty good, then they look like they whiffed again on Geno Smith.

But to get back to us, the 2012 draft when we picked Wilson in the 1st and Randle in the 2nd rounds had a really bad affect on us, now it looks to me like Randle just was ill suited to play in Gillbride's offense, but the Wilson injury really set the organization back, then if you add in Kenny Philips who was our first rounder in 2008, that also turned out to hurt us, then in that same draft we landed Steve Smith in the 2nd round and that turned out to be another killer.

So injuries as much as anything have really hurt the Giants and Reese. Those three players could have been core players, instead they all had very short careers, and all did show promise, although some could make an argument against Wilson.
Not thrilled with Selvie as a difference maker

If they sign Selvie

I do not think they draft DE at 9.
If I remember Correctly,. Selvie beat Pugh continually

You might also remember that Pugh was playing with one arm..
If they sign Selvie he'd get a small guarantee and likely still be
yatqb : 3/19/2015 4:43 pm : link
cuttable if he didn't win a spot in camp. I see no reason why Selvie would prevent us from drafting a DE early, just as I see no reason who adding Ellis would stop us from taking a Dt early.

I guess what I'm saying is that signing him can't hurt us.

Intriguing...Another role player...Another dollar spent and were still no closer to improving the talent level of this team. What's funny is were reworking contracts for cap room to sign guys who will make little or no difference to this team. I Could care less if people say I'm annoying but there has been very little to be excited about this year and off season. 3 loosing seasons, 2 assistant coach changes, bad free agent signings and 1 great pick in Beckham Jr. sums up the Giants the past couple of years...The fact that people were hyping this guy to be some big free agent is also a head scratcher. I guess at this point we just let Jerry keep cherry picking his budget shopping and we hope for the best. What else can we do. Couldn't get any worse.
Adequate depth signing
TD : 3/19/2015 4:47 pm : link
He's a solid #3 or #4 DE and would help for the reasons others have pointed out above.

He would have no impact on our draft plans, however.

Who would you have signed? The Giants went after McCourty and he decided to stay home, and Suh was too rich for us. Other than that there weren't a lot of difference makers at positions of need for us. Paea, maybe, but Ellis might be able to do the same job for tons less money, and if we draft a DT in the 1st 3 rounds it might be superfluous to have that FA after a year.
Forgot Dan Williams.
yatqb : 3/19/2015 5:24 pm : link
But all these other Safeties that signed elsewhere were SO overpriced that it wasn't worth it, and might even have caused grief when we later tried to re-sign Amukamara.

I wonder if he remembers when Jerry Reese claimed JPP made Selvie.
Thats pretty interesting, because Spags has to have input into the talent pool available. So if he signs off maybe there is something more to Selvie that others realize. I am a Spags believer especially in defensive ability.
Didnt realize he has so much starting experience
j_rud : 3/19/2015 5:45 pm : link
(29 of his 34 games with the Cowboyss). Like Ellis, would be a solid under the radar signing and would give the Giants a nice stable of pass rushers with JPP, Moore, and Ayers. I'd be a fan of this move.

You have to remember this is a team sport and although some of the signings may seem underwhelming to the average fan, they actually play a role on this team and will probably fit in quite nicely in fact. So you can call the money spent wasted, but in my opinion and that of the Giants, all these guys will probably play significant roles in the grand scheme of things. Take the latest signing, for example, Ellis is a run-stopper, and to pair him inside with Hank should provide a significant upgrade to our run D. Ellis alone might be a meh signing, but paired with a potential all-pro, could be the right formula and think we paid much, much less for him then any of the other sought after DTs on the market. I think the Giants got it right.

Sign a veteran safety and on to the draft. Of course, we need to nail this draft too.

Intriguing... you continue to have no fucking clue what you're talking about. Having better depth leads to improving the talent level of the team. Because we didn't sign the players with the names you recognize, the Giants are having a bad offseason in your eyes. Kick Returners, 3rd down backs, run stopping DTs, they don't make a difference in the football game? Hmmm.

Agent: Bucs reach out to former USF DE George Selvie
sphinx : 3/19/2015 9:10 pm : link
The Bucs, searching for free-agent help at defensive end, have reached out to former USF All-American George Selvie, according to his agent, Deryk Gilmore.

Selvie, 28, had 10 sacks and 29 starts in the last two seasons with the Cowboys, who just signed former Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy. Selvie is reportedly visiting the Giants today, and it's not known whether the Bucs are lined up for a visit should he not sign with New York.

If the Giants want him, they may have to keep him out of Tampa.

Found this on a Cowboys message board.

A guy started a thread updating Cowboys fans on Selvie and Spencer:

"I was on plane with Selvie earlier today. He is signing with Giants he was headed over for physical and to sign. Also said Spencer is in Seattle and doubts he is coming back. Said we were in good hands with Hardy and Mincey and Lawrence and that we would grab another DE in draft. By the way what a helluva nice guy. Total class act and gentleman for the short time we spoke and also with other passengers on plane."

Hard to believe
RetroJint : 3/19/2015 10:38 pm : link
but going into his last season at USF, the player evrrybody was talking about was Selvie. He tanked. To his credit, he stayed with it, and is now a respectable player. The Giants have JPP, Ayers, Moore & Wynn. One more for competition in camp won't hurt.
