I see very little discussion about him here on the forum, and wonder how he might factor into the Giants draft strategy.
While I favor taking Scherff with our first round pick, I'd be happy to take DL Shelton if I thought Jones had potential to be a starter. He looks good on tape, but I realize he's been playing at a much lower level of competition in the CFL.
And when did "Edge" become a position? If I'm drafting a pass rushing lineman, I want him to be a DE or DT!

Thank you and I really did love the signing I like that the Giants are exploring all options to improve the talent along the OL. Now Jones admittedly knows he has a long way to go but he has the attitude to succeed. He will be closely watched by me during the preseason but I would be shocked if he earns a starting job.
1. No, not as good a chance as a second round pick in the upcoming draft IF we do nothing else in FA and draft Cann or Thomlinson in Rd 2.
2. Yes/maybe, if we do not dsign a Tier 2 OG in FA and only draft Marpet in Rd 3.
Tough to say in a vacuum.
Jay, if he starts at OG the yard is immaterial, since NFL OGs are generally almost a yard behind the C when they line up. To me the issue is whether he can pull and anchor as well as is needed against NFL DTs.
If he wins the backup C gig, it's a good start for all.

To me that's the question here. An OL who first wins rookie of the year and then the OL of the year awards in a pro league is pretty impressive, depending upon the level of competition. La'el Collins won it in the SEC, Scherff won the Outland Trophy. It's hard to know how Jones compares, but he totally dominated the guys across from him.
in the CFL is not so far out of his element

If he can long snap, maybe he will compete with DeOssie.

Can you give us some insight into how you came to that conclusion? Because you offered nothing to back up those opinions. You could be right, but educate us as to what makes you so sure of his talent level.
It's really hard to say whether grown men -professionals- would beat college kids?
Most of those guys played at US colleges, too.

If the Giants are real lucky, he will make the 53-man roster and be the second backup (behind Jerry) at guard and the 3rd backup (behind Reynolds) at center.

Yea I don't get this either. I liked him on tape, but if anything, he is an URFA from an SEC school....maybe.
Willie, that was Ivan15 saying that. I asked him to back up his comments...so far crickets, but I'm patient.

FWIW I was involved in a discussion with someone who is very close to the Calgary coaching staff and brought up the name of Brett Jones. Reaction was quite positive from this former CFL player towards Jones. Described Jones as a tough nosed, well anchoring lineman who rarely gets beat by any lineman that he faces. Very bright and able to make the line calls that are required. Projects well according to him as a good guard and feels that he has enough mobility to pull if required. Definitely sees him as capable of playing in the NFL and would not be surprised if he were on the opening day roster. He does agree that there is an adjustment period required but believes Jones to have the same demeanor as DD who many of us really liked. That is all for now, but will chat with this former player again soon and if other info. comes along will pass it on.
