What about Brett Jones?

John K : 3/21/2015 12:55 pm
I see very little discussion about him here on the forum, and wonder how he might factor into the Giants draft strategy.

While I favor taking Scherff with our first round pick, I'd be happy to take DL Shelton if I thought Jones had potential to be a starter. He looks good on tape, but I realize he's been playing at a much lower level of competition in the CFL.

And when did "Edge" become a position? If I'm drafting a pass rushing lineman, I want him to be a DE or DT!
Jones is extremely raw
Jay on the Island : 3/21/2015 1:19 pm : link
The Giants can't and won't alter their draft plans due to the arrival of Jones. With that said I loved the signing at the time and I think he has a nice ceiling but he is most likely going to be redshirted this year if he makes the team.

Don't discount the Canadian.

I believe he will start from day one at guard.
I dont get it either
MotownGIANTS : 3/21/2015 2:13 pm : link
from the looks of his resume he is a player. Too me we got a high draft pick interior OL, if you want to factor in youth.

Career highlights and awards:

Grey Cup champion (2014)
2013 - CFL's Most Outstanding Rookie Award
2013 - Jackie Parker Trophy
2014 - CFL's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award
CFL All-Star: 2014
CFL West All-Star: 2014

Thank you and I really did love the signing I like that the Giants are exploring all options to improve the talent along the OL. Now Jones admittedly knows he has a long way to go but he has the attitude to succeed. He will be closely watched by me during the preseason but I would be shocked if he earns a starting job.
Start?
JerseyCityJoe : 3/21/2015 2:17 pm : link
Its unclear if he even makes the team right now.
Honestly
Jay on the Island : 3/21/2015 2:20 pm : link
expecting him to start this season is setting yourself up for disappointment. He needs a year to refine his technique and to get stronger in and NFL strength and conditioning program. He also has to get used to defensive linemen being closer to him than he was accustomed to in Canada.
Jones dominated the level of competition he played at,
Ira : 3/21/2015 2:24 pm : link
so I think there's no question about his having what it takes to make the team. The question is does he have what it takes to start in the nfl and will he be ready to do that this year. There's no way of knowing before pre-season.
Nice replies from everyone

I'm not getting my hopes up yet, but is it far fetched to expect Brett Jones to have as good a chance to make the lineup as, say, a lineman we draft in the second round or lower?
Jones is a free lottery ticket
raever : 3/21/2015 2:42 pm : link
No guaranteed money in the contract. If he pans out great if not no BFD.

Exactly.

To your question, I could answer two ways:

1. No, not as good a chance as a second round pick in the upcoming draft IF we do nothing else in FA and draft Cann or Thomlinson in Rd 2.

2. Yes/maybe, if we do not dsign a Tier 2 OG in FA and only draft Marpet in Rd 3.

Tough to say in a vacuum.
Starting from day 1?
Lithium : 3/21/2015 3:50 pm : link
I would hope this is not the plan. Johnny Boy stated the oline needed significant improvements. I hope Newhorse, Jerry, and the Canadian are not the improvements.

Jay, if he starts at OG the yard is immaterial, since NFL OGs are generally almost a yard behind the C when they line up. To me the issue is whether he can pull and anchor as well as is needed against NFL DTs.

JonC : 3/21/2015 4:43 pm : link
Jones is coming from the CFL, he's got a sizable leap to the NFL to navigate.

If he wins the backup C gig, it's a good start for all.
Jon, do you think the CFL is on a par with top college programs?
yatqb : 3/21/2015 4:47 pm : link
For me it's so hard to judge that. Would some of their teams defeat a top SEC team? Who the heck knows? I'd guess NFL front offices do, but I sure don't. What do you think?

I honestly don't know, it's a good question. CFL is generally considered professional football, but not at the same level as the NFL.

To me that's the question here. An OL who first wins rookie of the year and then the OL of the year awards in a pro league is pretty impressive, depending upon the level of competition. La'el Collins won it in the SEC, Scherff won the Outland Trophy. It's hard to know how Jones compares, but he totally dominated the guys across from him.
Canadiens in the NFL

I'm not saying this means anything, but my sense Brett Jones being the best
in the CFL is not so far out of his element

He's the same as an extra 5th round draft pick from an SEC school
Ivan15 : 3/21/2015 5:53 pm : link
If the Giants are real lucky, he will make the 53-man roster and be the second backup (behind Jerry) at guard and the 3rd backup (behind Reynolds) at center.

If he can long snap, maybe he will compete with DeOssie.

Can you give us some insight into how you came to that conclusion? Because you offered nothing to back up those opinions. You could be right, but educate us as to what makes you so sure of his talent level.

It's really hard to say whether grown men -professionals- would beat college kids?

Most of those guys played at US colleges, too.

Yea I don't get this either. I liked him on tape, but if anything, he is an URFA from an SEC school....maybe.

So basically you're saying any SEC offensive lineman drafted in the 5th round would be the offensive lineman of the year in the CFL. Really?

Willie, that was Ivan15 saying that. I asked him to back up his comments...so far crickets, but I'm patient.

Sorry. P.S. Cameron Wake was CFL defensive player of the year and went to 3 pro bowls after being signed by Miami. We can dream...
I'll view him as a guy competing for a roster spot

Brett Jones

snickers : 3/15/2015 3:14 pm

FWIW I was involved in a discussion with someone who is very close to the Calgary coaching staff and brought up the name of Brett Jones. Reaction was quite positive from this former CFL player towards Jones. Described Jones as a tough nosed, well anchoring lineman who rarely gets beat by any lineman that he faces. Very bright and able to make the line calls that are required. Projects well according to him as a good guard and feels that he has enough mobility to pull if required. Definitely sees him as capable of playing in the NFL and would not be surprised if he were on the opening day roster. He does agree that there is an adjustment period required but believes Jones to have the same demeanor as DD who many of us really liked. That is all for now, but will chat with this former player again soon and if other info. comes along will pass it on.
I'd be happy if he turns out to be a super sub

It'd be unrealistic to think he will start for us for any period of time.
I'm not counting on it, but I'd sure love it if he became a viable

player for us. I still hope that we draft an OL very early. A guy like Scherff, who could play OG or OT, is appealing to me.
I'm not sure how Jones will turn out
Mason : 3/21/2015 11:17 pm : link
but I think some on this thread have a false sense of modern NCAA division I football. NCAA is very watered down compared to past decades. I don't want to rain on any Buckeyes parade but that team didn't seem all that impressive. I admit that I seldom follow CFL teams unless it is for a player I like that went undrafted but I have a difficult time believing that one of their teams can't match up with a powerhouse like Kent State.
His resume
LakeGeorgeGiant : 3/21/2015 11:45 pm : link
is impressive. By all accounts he dominated as a rookie. He will get every opportunity to prove himself in camp. Starting this year might be setting the bar a bit high, but get a year under his belt and I think he could start. A promising young player, a great sign.
