The Case For Trading Up

geelabee : 3/22/2015 12:34 pm
The Giants need an impact defender that has the potential to be defensive equivalent of OBJ...I see one player that appear to be "sure thing"...a player whose tape just jumps off the screen. based on the number of pure impact plays....and.whose measurable are even better then the tape...that player is Vic Beasley hands down the best pure defender in this draft...What excites me the most about Beasley is that his athleticism project well to OLB...and has as impressive as anyone in LB positional drills...

The problem with Beasley he will be long gone by the time the Giants pick....and a number of mock drafts show him going as high as #5 to The Skins...some even have Jacksonville tacking Beasley at #3 over Fowler whose tape quite frankly just doesn't excite me...

Assuming Beasley gets by Jacksonville...would it make sense to approach Oakland about a trade up scenario...Based on the draft charts...the value of the 4th pick is 1,800 vs the 9th pick is 1,450 the Giants would need to come up with 450 points...which is equivalent to this year's #3 and next year's #3

So the question...is Vic Beasley worth both the 2015 & 2016 #3 picks...If the Giants feel he is this year's defensive OBJ...which would allow them to switch picks with the Raiders @4 front running the Redskins who are almost certain to take Beasley @5 ??
No

not worth it.
I'm never a fan of a trade up
UConn4523 : 3/22/2015 12:46 pm : link
Unless it's for a franhise QB (I'm talking about the first round). You will likely always lose out on value and we are a team that can't afford to give up picks.
No way!
John K : 3/22/2015 12:47 pm : link
Beasley is not a sure thing, and not worth giving up draft picks we desperately need.

We'll get an excellent player at #9. Hopefully Cooper, Scherff or Shelton.
No......he is a better 3-4 Lber and we need more draft picks not less
George from PA : 3/22/2015 12:56 pm : link
But I do agree that I would love a defensive equvilant of OBJ
trading up depends on the price
GiantsFan84 : 3/22/2015 1:04 pm : link
if Chicago will swap first rounders for the cost of a 5th then you move up to make sure you get the WR you want. but anything more than that, this team can't afford to do.
I wouldn't do it
GiantJake : 3/22/2015 1:06 pm : link
Now, if Leonard Williams dropped...but that's not happening. The Giants will get a good player at #9. Why trade away your 3rd rounder when you could possibly be in a position to draft a 2nd round talent that drops? A safety, a WR, a CB...whatever.
No! They will get a great palyer at #9.

.
I will agree with you in that....

...Beasley is that dude. The though of him being in the NFC East and NOT on the Giants is the equivalent of a Subway, foot long, shit sandwich.

And we're all gonna have to take a bite.

5 points if you know what movie I'm paraphrasing from.
How do you know he'll be gone at 9
Lowell : 3/22/2015 1:30 pm : link
There are at least a dozen players who could go top eight none of whom are name Beasly.
He might be there
Glover : 3/22/2015 1:49 pm : link
and the Giants may pass on him. If he gets drafted by the skins and plays OLB that would be a better fit for his skills than being a Giant SAM. I agree with the fans here who don't want to draft a guy that will be changing positions entering the NFL. Absolutely not worth trading up to get. I wanted the Giants to move up and get Ziggy Ansah.
....

i love beasley! i would be very excited if giants made a move for him! we have a serious need both at LBer and Safety and he would be an immediate starter.
Not a chance

not to mention I feel bust on this kid for some reason, at least as a Giant.
If jacksonville
area junc : 3/22/2015 2:39 pm : link
passes on him at #3 theyre insane. But hey, its the Jags
ZERO!
old man : 3/22/2015 3:11 pm : link
There is no one, in spite of the names of LWilliams, Beasley, Gregory, even Cooper that are NFL guarantees to have to give up at the least a 3rd.
We are going to get a good player at 9, what they become will be up to them, and our coaching.
That is why the trade DOWN case is often presented on BBI.
In either case the Giants are the anti-Patriots of draft position trading.

No way we trade up and that would be full Metal jacket
There are no can't miss prospects.
81_Great_Dane : 3/22/2015 5:55 pm : link
There are guys who pan out as expected, and guys who don't. A team always hoping it gets the former, but it's a crapshoot.

I agree with those saying there's nobody in this draft who is clearly worth the price of trading up, not even Leonard Williams. Also: The Giants have need everywhere, and aren't in position to trade multiple 2015 picks for a single prospect.
A trade
MotownGIANTS : 3/22/2015 7:24 pm : link
back into the end of 1st rd would not be bad....especially if a top 5 falls to 9.

We swap our 2nd and 4th to get back into the 1st.
Giants have too many holes
blueblood : 3/22/2015 8:10 pm : link
to be giving up draft picks..
only team you call about trading up is oakland
CGiants07 : 3/22/2015 8:13 pm : link
since they seem to not even use the chart so maybe you could get them to swap for a 4th
Why does everyone keeps saying we have too many holes to fill?
MotownGIANTS : 3/23/2015 9:54 am : link
Let's be realistic not all 7 picks will be NFL players let alone starters or really good backups. Picks 5 thru 7 will more than likely be out of football in 3 to 4 yrs, or no more than camp fodder.

We have went the ST route in FA. Why not take some real swings at guys with superior grading to enhance the team.

2 - 1st, 1 - 3rd, 5th, 6th & 7th is still nothing to frown at.
The problem is NYG runs a 4-3
JonC : 3/23/2015 10:07 am : link
and in the NFL, a 4-3 WILL typically doesn't impact the game as much as a DE.

Too expensive to trade up on a gamble.
Going for my five points.....Jaws

This team needs its first 3 picks the next 2 years to replenish the roster with young talent. If we were giving up 4ths and or 5ths to move up, yes. 3rd's no.

We simply need to much and were not that close on D to where Beasley can save the Defensive roster
