Graziano: NYG okay with letting Eli play out his current contract

Defenderdawg : 3/22/2015 10:41 pm
"PHOENIX -- The New York Giants recently had another conversation with the representatives for quarterback Eli Manning, but the two sides are no closer to agreement on a contract extension and the Giants are comfortable letting Manning play out the final year of his contract, two sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Sunday."

Nassib??!!
Mdgiantsfan : 3/23/2015 9:57 am : link
Anyone opining that Nassib is the answer loses all credibility in my book. From what we've seen thus far (albeit presesaon only), there has been nothing that jumps out to me about him that hints at anywhere near Eli's level. While I hope he is servicable and can fill in a pinch, I for one hope we are not seeing Nassib under center anytime soon.
i'm cool with that
Les in TO : 3/23/2015 10:00 am : link
let's see what happens this season first. i doubt eli wants to start over elsewhere, but if there is more of the same this season, i think mara will look at everyone in the organization from reese all the way down to the yoga instructor.
How about a $10MM NLTBE incentive for winning the Super Bowl?
Big Blue Blogger : 3/23/2015 10:03 am : link
It's a recipe for instant cap hell, and I don't even know whether the League, the Union or the CBA would permit it. But it would sure would align Eli's elite comp with his main claim to elite stature.

Stop spending other people's money.
As stated
liteamorn : 3/23/2015 10:14 am : link
Eli isn't going anywhere, but it will probably be a lot more expensive next year, franchise or not.

This offense has a chance to put up some big numbers this year, we don't have that 4 game "learning curve" that we had last year. OBJ out of the gate, Vereen, yeah this could be a good year, with a hefty price tag on Eli next year.
anybody figuring that nobody will pay Eli a ton of money
I Love Clams Casino : 3/23/2015 10:19 am : link
are wrong.

They forget how good we have it compared to other teams. That is a 2 time Superbowl MVP...if Eli becomes a FA, he will get his money...you can bet on that. Teams like Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Jacksonville, Cleveland, with a chance at Eli? Are ya freakin kidding me? He will get paid...I don't care if he has his worst season since his rookie year, he will get his money if he's a FA
Clams is right. Just one team that thinks they are a QB away

2016 Franchise tag money would be, what,
Enoch : 3/23/2015 10:26 am : link
120% of his 2015 salary? That's about $21MM. (If the base for the 120% figure includes amortized-bonus cap hit, it's closer to $24MM.) The "exclusive" tag could end up being higher than that, but I doubt that the Giants would need to use that to keep him.

2015 at a $19.5MM cap hit and 2016 at a $21MM cap hit-- with Eli shouldering all the injury risk and hitting free agency in 2017 at 36-- is a pretty good fallback option for the team.

ugh, I should have parked NYGNYY. That's not going to create too much confusion now...please be a good poster.
eli will get paid
hitdog42 : 3/23/2015 10:31 am : link
however he should not get paid top 5 QB money-
he made top 5 for a year of bottom 5 play in 2013... that should factor into something.
he deserves a contract of a high level QB that is in the final 3rd of their career.
That, to me, sounds like Elis wants more guaranteed money
Matt M. : 3/23/2015 10:32 am : link
than they want to pay right now to extend him.
No matter the year he has...
bradshaw44 : 3/23/2015 10:32 am : link
If the Giants let him walk I can definitely see Houston giving him a nice contract. And it's not far from his home town.
Yes, Eli will most likelyre-sign, but this is still a big deal...
sb from NYT Forum : 3/23/2015 10:40 am : link
...because the Giants won't be getting any cap relief now by a restructure and because he will be signing for full market value next year (if he won't be seeking max $, then he would take an extension now).

On the one hand, can you blame him? Why take a discount when your team's GM has shown absolutely no ability to build a competent OL? In other words, get the most you can before you get killed.

On the other hand, Eli's salary in the past few years (one of the highest percentages of the cap in the league, if I'm not mistaken) has handcuffed Reese's ability to improve other areas.

Personally, I am little disappointed in Eli for not giving the Giants a little relief. But again, I don't blame anyone for trying to make as much as they can.
we have no idea if Eli
nyynyg : 3/23/2015 10:44 am : link
is or isn't willing to give the Giants relief. that is totally unfounded speculation. there could be 100s of reasons why a deal is not done yet and some of them may be the Giants not wanting to do it right now also.
and if the Jets have an "OK" year
I Love Clams Casino : 3/23/2015 10:47 am : link
but stinky QB play.....don't think they won't do it....what a freakin nightmare THAT would be.....or, or or....even worse...

Sam Bradford stinks it up for the Eagles, and and...an....I can't even say it
Perhaps no cap relief now
JonC : 3/23/2015 10:49 am : link
but also no money pushed out into the future either. Carving a few mil out of the 2015 cap isn't likely to bring this team to a much higher level of performance. Patience required.

I'm not going into the details of this yet again but if you look at the details of his contracts for yourself and try to find a comparable contract for a top tier QB you will have a hard time to come up with one. You need to go down to the Andy Dalton range.

Did Stafford, Ryan, Ben, Cutler, and Dalton give their teams hometown discounts?

I never understood why fans expect players to ask for less. Do you ask for less in your job?

Because its sports? When you go to work, do you have 50,000 people booing or cheering every time you send an e-mail?

Do people you've never seen or heard of, buy replicas of your khaki's and sports shirt, so they can show their pride? I hate when people say that, because there really is little to no comparison, to what we do when we go to work every day......JMHO...
You can't compare Eli to Tom Brady
Ivan15 : 3/23/2015 11:11 am : link

What is the smartest thing for the Giants to do?
Doomster : 3/23/2015 11:22 am : link
Best case scenario
dep026 : 9:09 am : link : reply
is Eli throws for 4,500 yards, 35 TDs, with a 13-3 record, another SB win and a SB MVP. That way he asks for more money, so a small part of BBI could just complain...

We all know its going to happen!

Uh, no we don't.....Can Eli throw for 4500 yards+ and 35 tds(he's only thrown over 30 once in 11 seasons)?.....If he remains upright....

As for 13-3, think that happens with this defense?.....Last season, we saw OBj get a lot of single coverage....that is not going to happen this year.....So, what if Cruz is not 100%? Think Randle can step up? Possible in a contract year, but remains to be seen....we still need that fifth OLman....

The smart move, with Eli being 35 in 2016, is to franchise him.......if the franchise tag is 23M, that's only 3M more than his cap this year, and is a hedge against a long term contract for a 35 year old qb....he gets his money, but on a year to year basis....with the cap going up, this is easily doable....Eli wants to remain a Giant....but he doesn't want a yearly franchise tag either.....As for this Brady deal talk, he is not married to Giselle, who makes more money than Brady.....and as for Brady, you don't think he has some, wink, wink, side deal with the Kraft's?

The Giants will be trying to get to respectability this year.....I don't think they make the playoffs.....JPP is still up in the air....funny though, we have not seen any word that some team is interested.....those two first rounders are costly......so will JPP risk injury and play under the tag? Or will he buckle under, and take the guaranteed money the Giants offer? If the Giants are smart, they hold the line against him....

Uh huh. And Christian Bale reminds me of Jesus Christ. The resemblance runs just about as deep. When Ryan Nassib gets decked by Reggie White and jumps up asking for more, you can compare him to Phil Simms.

Come to think of it, Nassib's production the past two years has been eerily similar to Phil's output in 1982 & 1983. (Those were the two seasons Phil lost to knee and thumb injuries.)
How has anyone seen enough of Nassib to compare him to anyone?

Eli's Contract

I say, let him play out the contract, we get a great compensatory pick, free up almost $20 mill on next years cap, and let the heir apparent Nassib take over. Nassib is better then all of these QB's in this years draft.

andrew_nyg : 3/23/2015 12:30 pm : link
throwing with a collective 600 lbs in his face and on his back?

With this OL, no guarantee that Cruz will be 100%, breakable RB's, no established TE, and an enigma wrapped in a riddle aka Reuben Randle? And that's just on offense. Defensively they have decent CB's, a questionable replication of Strahan? Or is it Tuck? maybe Osi?...followed up with a bunch of below average to dumpster dive talent.

So far it looks like another season of Eli and OBJ playing catch with the rest of the team crumbling around them.

We need to be talking about Reese's contract...not Eli nor Colonels Tom's.

Though nothing is etched in stone, he's not going anywhere..Had we been able to sign a McCourtey or another high priced FA or two, my sense he would have been extended by now..But since, at best, it appears that there are no big contracts to give out in FA, I have no problem having us absorb whatever Eli's cap hit is this year..

Nothing wrong with that attitude at all. I have always been puzzled by the certitude of some posters here who claimed "I am sureEli will take a team friendly deal at the end" or "He is not going any where. Period." Such a bold statement ... but based on what established track record exactly, either by Eli himself, or by other members of the Manning family??

I think that's the sticky part, Mike - if this is his last contract, then he'd want the length to go at least as long as the minimum number of years he seems himself playing.

I don't think we can read anything into this, other than the Giants and Eli haven't agreed on terms, and that the current situation is good enough for both of them. As far as a hometown discount goes, I doubt it, but you never know - being stuck here could be more indicative of the length and less the total amount of the contract.
Rare as it may be, Graziano may be right.
Ivan15 : 3/23/2015 1:42 pm : link
If the Giants make the playoffs or more in 2015, there is a good incentive for Eli to not go anywhere else and to pay him what he is worth.

There are teams that I could see he might be interested in, however, like the Saints (after Brees, of course), the Texans, Jaguars and Titans if they can assemble enough offensive talent to make things interesting.
