Read some of the football threads and about 40% of the responses are melodramatic. In some of the off-topic threads that number easily doubles. For the sake of this discussion, I'm defining dramatic as posts with very little nuance, overly hyped outcomes, or needlessly argumentative.
Why are so many posters unable or unwilling to discuss things in a way that doesn't suppose that the other side of the conversation is either clueless, naïve, demented, ignorant, etc...
It's been my observation that the off season brings a lot more of this because there is no proof to show either side is right or wrong. FA signings can't be supported now as either good or bad since there are no on-field results, so people cling to their own opinions like life rafts. During the year the on-field results tend to keep one side or the other more quiet - at least week to week.
There are a lot of good posters posting a lot of good stuff now, but by and large most of those get buried in "this whole front office has to go, they have no idea what they are doing" or "everyone of these signings is a brilliant stroke of genius done by guys much smarter than all of us."
When I respond to a thread i take the thread on face value. Some here keep a dauceay of peoples past performances and delight in bashing the OP when he inadvertently posts something that is a perceived contradiction.
Its still a great site but posting something here is like walking through a bad part of town wearing hundred dollar bills on your suit

Don't want to start an argument ;), but I remember Pete's Corner being a regular brawl.

No way.
Don't get me wrong, I sometimes pine for the 'good old days' when you could type in any handle you wanted, there were flame wars on a daily basis, psychotic posters stalked other posters, and all that- but to imply that it was somehow more civil?
No way.
"how is that guy such a freak on BBI"?
this is a place to vent and throw paint at the wall"
See to me he nailed the answer to your question.
Now, I really don't have a problem with the radical opinions or the dramatics; it's a sports site.
My only complaint is the "argumentative" nature of some posters, which was addressed by the OP.
Argumentative and insulting responses to my posts bring out the competitive nature in me that motivates me to strike back.
The result, I get involved in an idiotic verbal sparring match which I do not have the time for.
I long for the old BBI, where I could casually make a comment, and if it was stupid or not well thought out, no one cared; they just ignored it and moved on.
But I agree with Eric, the tone has been better here lately, maybe posters with the internet courage are seeing they are not appreciated on BBI.
BBI is a safe sounding board, and though I've only been on a short time, but log enough to draw a safe conclusion, I believe that as personal as we let the subject matter get to us, I find very few consistent wranglings between 2 disagreeing BBIers.
We pee into each others pot, then we kick our own pot over, empty it out, and pee into it ourselves.
The key is, we are passionate about the Giants. If this was the PATRIOTS blog, with their apparent lack of weaknesses the last 15 years,a) it'd be boring, b)they would be arguing about TB's hair style or some minutia, c) they would be talking out of their butts and fellating at the same time.
for the interwebs
I agree with this completely, I have been here since Pete's Corner and have had my head ripped off for not being a nitty gritty X's and O's guy. I am a life long Giants fan but I am not invested to the point as some people on here. I have learned a lot by just reading and very very rarely posting. Simply because I don't study the cap or know all the nuances of a west coast style offense puts me at risk of a beheading if I say something wrong.

I am more pleased with the results.
What?
:-)
Those were crazy times, where people would use others' handles in order to start trouble and there was no way of knowing who it was, which meant you could post anything and relinquish ownership by saying someone was impersonating you.
Ah, the good old days...

What's so hard to understand? You dont change a bad team to SB contenders in on year. While everyone wants to sign high Free Agents amd hit all 7 draft picks, its unrealistic.
Whether people want to believe it or not, the Giants have done things right the last few offseasons. Our drafting seems better, we arent signing the most expensive free agents, we are making changes on the coaching staff that needed to be change.
You look at what we got on offense:
Franchise QB
Three running backs who all bring something to the table
A star WR, a WR who has been amazing in years past (please get healthy. and anotehr WR who has shown flashes of being very good.
A TE who got immensely better from the year before
4 offensive lineman that are set: Beatty, Richburg, Schrwatz, Pugh. While they all might not be great, if healthy they will provide to be adequate.
Defensively we have issues... but...
JPP is very good
Hankins was very good last year
DRC/Prince is an excellent combo
Kennard showed flashes of being very good.
Now we need safety and a few LBs.... but you cant have all-rpos every year. If we continue to draft well and spend wisely.... we will be contending soon enough.
I actually think there has a been a huge upswing in the quality and number of football posts the last few weeks.
Agree with Eric - I have been close to (gulp) just going back to NYG's team board due to the drama and sometimes flat out ignorant responses from many posters here at BBI. However, as Eric mentioned, the talk the last 3-4 weeks has actually been great to read. I dont post alot, but alot of the pure football stuff and less drama here lately has been great source of my social media nyg fix

I really don't remember where it was common for people to use another posters regular handle. I do remember many times where people used a variety of dupes and some of those because of their joking nature would be used by multiple people and of course there was zero control or rules regarding who and what would be posted, but there seemed to be a unwritten rule which mostly was followed where people didn't take over other regulars identities. Not saying it never happened but it wasn't any sort of problem to deal with. Of course it was a much smaller community then.

In real life, they'd be much nicer and kind than their online personas. I don't really get why people hate other people here. It's a freaking sports forum. Most of us are complete strangers.''
for one example, I really do love SanFran,
even though he is a radical leftist
(JOKE, you mids, hahahahaha, JOKE)
Real hate is as rare as true love. Disagreement, yes; frustration with unclear thinking, yes; hate, that's sickness.
I believe they do.
I am probably thinking of much earlier than 2001. I think I was mostly on a BBI break around the beginning of the login period. I registered when it happened but wasn't coming around much just then so I guess I missed that wave.

Things got really wild here during the bad seasons of '98 and '99. Cooled off in '00, rinse repeat.
Good question.
Probably because there are a few Keyboard Cowboys who are a little deranged, but who would have enough common sense (and fear) to never says the things they do in a face to face chat.
It's the anonymity that brings out the worst in people.

The worst moment of the forum I recall was when Eric was away on his honeymoon and Pete had to return to "Pete's Corner" to clean up the threads.
I just think people are way too sensitive and if someone disagrees with their post you immediately get "F**K YOU!"
I admit to being mostly a reader as I don't know the nuances of the game like a lot of you but it gets ridiculous. Though my handle may not say so I've been on here for 20 years (Eric can attest to that) and it gets worse and worse.
That being said, I do agree that the conversations around this FA and upcoming draft have been more meaningful than in years past. I hope it keeps up.
I agree.
We have a lot of holes on this team. So far we have improved:
- pass catching/protection RB
- Upgraded our return game
- Improved our LB core
- Run stuffing DT
- Another edge pass rusher
Now does it mean all these guys are pro bowlers? Absolutely not. But guys like Kiwi, Rolle, Williams, etc were bad players. I have faith in Reese that the talent he brought in will improve our team.
Have another strong draft, and it wont be long before we are in the postseason again.
aaah, Dep, Dep, Dep...
How f'ing convenient of you to leave out the Oline. :>)
Or so I've heard.

My favorite is when you call someone on their bullshit (without profanity, mind you) and their immediate response is "fuck your Mother!". Class act, all the way, baby.
Sounds pretty pedantic.
