If you were Eli's agent how would you negotiate

Mike in Philly : 3/23/2015 9:40 pm
his next contract? Assume that Eli wants to play another 4-5 years, how would you negotiate what would be best for Eli (and you)? Taking into consideration Eli's accomplishments, the cap for next year and next years FA QB's, what kind of deal would you settle for?
If Eli plays out his deal

his performance this season will weigh heavily on the final contract

If I was his agent I would tell him to try and get the most money possible.
Pay my client market value

or I'll go find 10 other teams that will. Texans, Rams, Cardinals, Bills and Jets to name a few.

"Pay him and watch him win one more."
I'm pretty sure it's the Giants waiting on this, not Eli
Eric on Li : 3/23/2015 10:45 pm : link
My guess is Eli gets done right before the season and they use up whatever remaining space they have (minus contingency) to make the deal as cap friendly moving forward as possible.

JPP on the other hand has all the leverage. We probably aren't offering him much more guaranteed $ than the amount he's guaranteed to get on the tag. Even if he takes the exact deal the Giants are offering him now next year, he will have 14M more in his pocket when he does so.
The worst case scenario for Eli is that he plays under the Franchise
Tom in NY : 3/23/2015 11:20 pm : link
tag, which should be in the $18-$20M range next season.

They really just need to wait for the Giants to come to them. Yes, there is a possibility of a sub-par season next year, but the greater odds are he is going to continue along what he did this past season.

The Giants are going to have the pressure as they won't be able to retain both Eli and JPP if they don't get a deal done with at least one of them.
Eli will have a new contract sometime in pre-season
jc in c-ville : 3/23/2015 11:26 pm : link
Or early regular season.

A big, back loaded one.

The Giants have ZERO leverage.
They do have leverage
RetroJint : 3/23/2015 11:34 pm : link
1. The actuary tables. Eli is now a senior citizen as far as the NFL goes. 2. Injury protection. Just because he has never sustained a serious injury does not mean that he is bionic. Look at how fortunate Carson Palmer was. He signed an extension the night before he blew out his knee.

Eli has probably 50 million or so in guaranteed salary left in his NFL career. The agency representing him should be working to secure that as soon as possible.
At this point in Eli's career you do whatever Eli thinks is best.
wgenesis123 : 3/24/2015 5:27 am : link
He is not some rookie getting his first contract. He has an idea what he wants. As his agent you listen and advise him to get more if he can, but you respect the opion of a veteran. If I was his agent I would talk to him about his plans for his kids, and his own plans for after football. Once that is done you try to get him what he wants and most likely Eli will get what he wants.
It's about guaranteed money ths time
mrvax : 3/24/2015 6:00 am : link
So if the Giants give him a good amount of guaranteed dollars, his agent will likely settle for 5 years 100M, 60M guaranteed.

Eli set for life and the Giants reduce their % of cap dedicated to one person.
If the Giants want Eli back
SanFranNowNCGiantsFan : 3/24/2015 6:25 am : link
I'm pretty sure he'll be back. I think he's destined to retire a Giant. Sure hope so.
Should Be Close To Big Ben's Deal
Rong5611 : 3/24/2015 6:30 am : link
Supposedly the Giants offered a deal similar to Big Ben's deal, seems fair to me as they are comparable players. I don't get why this isn't viewed as fair...

If I am Eli there is no way I sign a deal until I know
UberAlias : 3/24/2015 7:51 am : link
what the situation is with the HC. What happens if he signs now and things get ugly this season and they decide the can TC and JR? The new HC and GM may have different ideas about the QB position.

Having a coach and GM whose positions are on the line is not very conducive to extending your franchise QB who has won two SBs with the current guy.
JPP is over paid anyway
djstat : 3/24/2015 8:17 am : link
People way to attached to what happened in 2011 when he ha Tuck, Osi and Kiwi still in their prime. Corey Webster still playing great ball etc. JPP was lousy last year until it didn't matter. Then he played lights out against crappy teams.
What is Eli worth on the open market?
JohnB : 3/24/2015 8:28 am : link
Stop being a fan and be a GM. How do you think the rest of the NFL sees Eli and what he is worth? Do you think the Jets or Texas will give Eli a 20+ million per year contract multi-year deal? I'm not do sure.

The Giants are a class organization and Eli has been a stand up guy. I think the two sides will agree to something.

Yep. He has to show that he can be a force on his own. And I still think he belongs at LDE, not RDE. He isn't a natural pass rusher. He is a dominant run defender and would go up against normally weaker pass blocker at RT.
I think,
Doomster : 3/24/2015 9:00 am : link
the Giants are holding the cards here.....

He is under contract for this year....

Depending on what he does this season, determines the contract they offer.....

Now, if he wants something like 5 years, at big bucks, that is too much of a gamble....you franchise him after this season....he gets his money, and see what he does in 2016, when they should have their best team....the franchise tag will only cost about 3M more than his cap right now, and with the cap being extended, there will be enough cap room to surround him with better players....

He gets paid big bucks, guaranteed at the start of the season, and if he plays well, they can negotiate a favorable contract in 2017, or they can go the franchise route again....Eli gets his money, and it protects the Giants from long term disaster...win/win....

Eli is not leaving the Giants, unless they let him go.....and that's not happening...

Don't underestimate how much of a factor this is playing. This is a "wait and see" year for the coaching staff and possibly the GM. Why would you enter into a long term deal with an aging (but very good) QB when you know there is a real possibility that you may be bringing in new coaches and a new system? Any incoming coach would know they need to win with an aging QB they did not select, and he would be learning a new offensive system for the 2nd time in 3 years. As a new HC that does not spell "success story" and may limit the pool of coaches you have to choose from.

I don't think that is the primary motivating factor, but I'm pretty sure it is a consideration for the front office as they proceed with Eli's contract.
waiting is best for the Giants
Glover : 3/24/2015 9:21 am : link
It seems like it would be the same either way for Eli. He would get what Big Ben just got, and even if Eli has another fine statistical season as he did last season, I dont see his number going up significantly. If he plays poorly his offer would go down significantly I think.
Mainly from Giants perspective, but put in accelerators
mdc1 : 3/24/2015 5:50 pm : link
based on the number of games won, TD passes thrown and limits on the number of interceptions thrown.

Treat him like an account exec, you don't win you do not get paid good compensation beyond an average base salary. Right now he gets paid for great, average, and shit seasons because he has 2 rings. Shit changes, we stink right now.
If I'm Eli's agent I would be thrilled if
Mike in Philly : 3/24/2015 10:42 pm : link
the Giants franchise him for 2016. Other notable QBs that are UFAs for 2016 are Luck, Rivers, Bradford, Newton and RGIII. Which of these would the giants pursue over Eli?

And in 2017 (which is also the last year of Nassib's deal) there are no top QBs as UFAs. So, are they going to turn the franchise over to Nassib, one of the other FAs, or find the next franchise QB in the draft? As the agent I think MY cards are looking pretty good.
I'd tell Reece to hell with the money offer and
nicky43 : 3/25/2015 9:10 am : link
I'm not signing anything until you get two starting upgrades to the o-line. My player values his life more than he values money. You should too Mr. Reece.
If I'm Tom Condon...
Britt in VA : 3/25/2015 9:13 am : link
there is zero chance I let Eli enter next season without a new contract.

He's done everything that's been asked of him, and then some.

I'd hold out.
I'd wait until Eli throws 40Tds in the new system.
drkenneth : 3/25/2015 9:14 am : link
Then watch BBI meltdown.
And let me as you guys this...
Britt in VA : 3/25/2015 9:31 am : link
Since this is from the "agent's perspective", what incentive does Tom Condon have to let Eli play next year without a contract?

All it takes is one hit, and that 100 million dollar next contract goes bye bye.
I'd tell Reese to meet my price or try to win a Super Bowl with Nassib
PatersonPlank : 3/25/2015 11:53 am : link
that should shake him up.
With Ben's new deal
JonC : 3/25/2015 12:01 pm : link
Eli's now looking at $60M guaranteed as a target. Agreed I'd be working to secure that, pronto. Five years appears to be the normal term these days, but the 4-5th seasons might be workable as team option, including provisions and triggers for various extras.
Eli has all the leverage here

Go ahead get to the playoffs with nassib.

Seattle did it with Russell Wilson. What would have led to anybody believing that Wilson could be a Super Bowl QB?
Yeah, and Tom Brady was a 6th round pick.

The tag for Eli will be more than that. Minimum it will be 21Mil, but I think it will be more like 24Mil

Doesn't have to be the norm. Nassib was touted as a possible 2nd rounder. Somebody saw talent.
His body of work doesn't show starter, but with this system, seems a 'good' QB could make it work, especially when you add the run/scramble into the equation.
Nassib has as much of a chance of being Kirk Cousins...
Britt in VA : 3/25/2015 12:39 pm : link
as he does being Russell Wilson right now.

He is a complete unknown.
