NFT: Lundqvist

blueblood'11 : 3/24/2015 6:46 am
I know this was discussed briefly on the Rangers Ducks game thread but I wanted to go full bore on the topic. How concerned as a fan are you that Hank will not regain his form when he returns. I Know he will be fresh as a daisy and that's a plus but will he be as effective as Talbot is at this point. And how long will it take for him to find his game and if he doesn't what does AV ultimately do.

Cam is doing his best Lundqvist imitation and while I love Hank and he deserves the opportunity to finally win a cup it is really hard to ignore what Talbot has done and continues to do as the season winds down. I don't care what anyone says, it's been a long time Hank has been out and Talbot is as hot as a goalie can be. AV has to be thinking to himself how do I take this guy out of net with the way he is playing and everything that is at stake in hopes Lundqvist will pick up where he left off.

I just don't see it. It's been too long he's been out to just assume the whole ball of wax come hell or high water. He needs time and there isn't a whole lot of it left. And what time is left is it enough for him to find his groove. Maybe we're worried about nothing and Hank picks up where he left off. I hope so because it sure sounds like what every one is saying that when he comes back he's the man from then until the end.
I'm not a rangers fan

But at this point I'd have to believe that the only way the rangers don't win the cup is if Hank struggles in the playoffs and AV sticks with him because he's Hank. Otherwise that are as dominating as any team, in any sport, in recent memory.

Lundqvist is 100% the starter.

He was playing really well before his injury, and this was prior to the team taking it up another notch defensively.
I think the Rangers defense...
BamaBlue : 3/24/2015 7:46 am : link
has had a part in Talbot's success. Aside from a goal scoring drought (before the Ducks game), the Rangers have been playing a stout defense. I expect that to continue. We all know the playoffs are a whole different tempo than the regular season. I feel confident, because Lundqvist has been there and done well. As good as Talbot has been, he still hasn't been in that situation in the playoffs... that would make me a little more nervous than a slightly rusty Hank.
People keep trying to turn this into a debate.
arcarsenal : 3/24/2015 8:44 am : link
Why? I don't know.

Hank is the starter and will start every playoff game unless he has a setback or looks absolutely terrible for more than a game or two.

He didn't forget how to play goalie in 6 weeks. He just needs a few games to get back into the swing of things. He was playing very well before he got hurt...and so was the team. This hot streak didn't just happen because of Talbot. It started before Hank ever went down.
Give him the last few weeks to get back into form
yatqb : 3/24/2015 8:52 am : link
and imo he'll be fine. He's been working with Allaire all this time.
I'm not a ranger fan either
Mike from Ohio : 3/24/2015 8:54 am : link
but I have watched some of their games and they are playing very consistent, high-level defense. That may due in part to the team rallying around Talbot and knowing they didn't have the luxury of Lundqvist behind them, and had to play a tighter defensive game - which may also lead to reduced scoring.

I am usually a guy who would follow the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" line of thought, but how do you possibly sit Lundqvist if he is healthy? I don't think you can.

will get the starts, Talbot will get a pat on the back, and his great play will be remembered the next time his contract is up-- either by Sather or by some other GM in the league.
Lundqvist is a big game player
NewFakeDannyHeep : 3/24/2015 9:02 am : link
It's one thing to come into a season rusty at the beginning, he's not going to do that in the playoffs. We're going to get the under 2.00 GAA Lundqvist.

Yup. There's this false narrative being written that Talbot turned the teams fortunes around and that they were struggling with Lundqvist. It's not true.
Hank is the starter and one of the best goslies in the world

Lundqvist is the man. If the Rangers win the Cup this season it'll be behind the best goaltender in NY Rangers history. Talbot certainly IS hot, but AV has to go with The King.
Since this is a Giants site, let me put it another way - - - if Eli gets injured and Nassib plays very well to get the Giants into the playoffs who starts once Eli is ready? Who do you want to play in the Super Bowl? Eli and Hank are NY's super-stars. When they're ready, they play.

I don't understand why Lundqvist couldn't do a weekend stint in Hartford this past week. Give the pampered fuck Dolan's jet for the weekend.

He would have to pass thru waivers to play in Hartford.
Why don't you let him use your G-5?

I thought there was a two week conditional stint exception.

Thanks.

Yeah I did too, I was wondering the same thing but I saw the waiver thing somewhere, prob a beat writer on Twitter.

Henrik Lundqvist said that he hopes to return to game action this week. (SVT via Expressen)

Lundqvist said that he has a neck protector that will prevent him from getting “whiplash” and that he has been cleared for full contact. (SVT via Expressen)

He said that he was trying to protect his neck and avoid certain pucks during the first on-ice session where coaches were shooting on him but he has grown more comfortable with each on-ice session since. (SVT via Expressen)

Lundqvist will take part in the Rangers morning skate today.

Rodney, I saw this and assumed it was alright:

Such Conditioning Loan shall not extend for more than fourteen (14) consecutive days. I hate being wrong.
13.9 of the CBA
Deej : 3/24/2015 10:08 am : link
specifically addresses players coming of LTIR going to the aHL for conditioning.

My knowledge of the CBA is pretty poor. For the life of me I dont understand why we can bring up an AHLer when we have $10 million in NHL contracts sitting on LTIR (Hank, Klein).
Same here, Deej.
BrettNYG10 : 3/24/2015 10:09 am : link

obviously I meant "can't"
Deej : 3/24/2015 10:23 am : link
why CAN'T we bring up Lindberg, Klingberg, or Moeberg right now?
My one concern
gmen9892 : 3/24/2015 10:28 am : link
Is that Hank is going to be a little bit more gun-shy now when it comes to his trademark headbutting of pucks up high. He says he does it so that he doesnt have to put his glove up in front of his face.

With the recent injury, I wonder if he changes his style up, which might cause some issues since hes always played those kind of shots the same way.
The bottomline
raever : 3/24/2015 10:29 am : link
Hank is going to play. As he should. So why sweat it.
When Henrik is ready
NYerInMA : 3/24/2015 10:29 am : link
He plays. End of story. I can't believe there's even a debate on this.

I dont disagree with that statement, but it is what Hank is comfortable doing. Playing pucks a different way after playing them a certain way your whole life might take some adjusting.
what is the risk of re-injury of the
ColHowPepper : 3/24/2015 11:02 am : link

Is the risk small but the potential harm very large?
We don't know what kind of psychological hangover this might have, if any.

Maybe they reconfigure the mask so it's really hard to come unhinged
and expose the neck area?

Back to the ice, I view tonights' game as a very large tell: LA is trying to get back, and a strong performance by the Blueshirts will go a long way to erasing the sting of last June.
maybe he could wear one of those little plastic shields hanging from

He does wear one of those.
That shield
NYerInMA : 3/24/2015 11:32 am : link
is what was lifted by McDonagh's stick when Henrik got hit by the puck. It sounds like they've added a tougher neck shield and added something to his back collar for extra support as well. Based on AV's comments at practice, it sounds like Henrik will play against either Boston on Saturday or Washington on Sunday.

And that's precisely
Stufftherun : 3/24/2015 11:58 am : link
why it was such a freak occurence? What are the odds that a players stick would push the throat protector out of the way the instant a high shot like that was incoming?

You would think Hank has to take a number of high shots before he's completely comfortable.
I think he's been taking high shots since 3/18
Deej : 3/24/2015 12:10 pm : link
the delay is that he needs practices because while coaches can throw high shots at you, you need practice "track"-ing the puck (per AV) thru screens and bodies moving left and right.

Most athletes think they're indestructible. I wouldnt assume Hank is scared of shots. He's probably been pissed from day 1 that he's not out there, questioning the conservatism of the doctors. But great timing vis a vis the birth of his kid.
And like any good baseball pitcher
Stufftherun : 3/24/2015 12:20 pm : link
who likes to throw high and inside to move a batter off the plate, you'd think Hank would be tested by the opposition.

He's been out of real game action for an extended period, it's difficult to imagine there won't be a conditioning/adjustment period. A real good test would be facing Ovechkin's one-timer from just above the faceoff circle on the Caps PP.

Right. I could see him being pretty meh for 3-4 games, just getting back into the flow. He's always a guy who starts the season slowly. I hope it just does not take him weeks to get his shit together.
Let's get him into some game action first
figgy2989 : 3/24/2015 12:45 pm : link
Reports are he is looking to come back this weekend. Get a half dozen games under his belt and he should be good to go.

Now, if he comes back and he plays how he did the first part of the season....then there really is a decision AV will have to make.
I agree
PaulN : 3/24/2015 1:00 pm : link
That it may take Hank some time to get his game up to par, Hank always needs about 1/4 of a season to start the season to get his game up to his excellence, so does that mean he won't be able to get back up too his par, I am not sure to be honest, but I think the fact that he has played a lot already this season, and he has only not played for about a month would mean to me, that he should be able to get back up to his playing best sooner then that. I think he will need to play the rest of the games though, of this regular season, other then the back to back games, and we need to take whatever hit that incurs. Hank needs to be 100% for the playoffs, that is all that is needed, the president's trophy means SHIT! A 100% Hank means A LOT.

If this fails completely, and hank somehow is not the same at all, he loses his confidence because of this injury, then we have Talbot to take over. So I think we are in great shape in this area, I think it is a HUGE positive that Talbot has played so well, you have to really be a negative thinker to think this is a negative, or a shit stirring writer that wants to make a story, so he plays on people's fears. But there is nothing negative about hank coming back, it's all good.
Lundqvist Is The Guy
Percy : 3/25/2015 8:29 am : link
I expect him to return to form pretty quickly. May cost the team two or three games as he gets back into it, but, after last night's dismal performance (they played like they were asleep in front of Talbot, who made many great saves, but couldn't make them all), maybe the defense can exert themselves for Lundqvist as well as they did when Talbot had to step in. Lundqvist is the guy when the chips are down, as they soon will be. Rangers have been less than convincing lately against Chicago, Detroit, and the Kings, and Tampa Bay and the Islanders gave them fits earlier in the year,. They'll need him at his best in the playoffs.
