... And Chip Kelly calls the Giants War Room? Would Jerry Reese consider making a deal with a division rival?
It was a question that came up on NFL Radio this morning. Interested to see some opinions from the BBI contingent.
For what it's worth, the radio guys thought Reese would only care about the compensation, and not consider the fact that the Eagles would potentially add a franchise QB.
The Giants have not extended Eli's contract so the Giants have other options, the Giants could;
Draft Mariota and have him sit one year behind Eli.
Draft Mariota and trade Eli.
I am not proposing that this should happen but I am offering another possibility.
If he were franchised his contract would be 120% of his current contract.
If he signed a long term contract his CAP hit would still be +/- $20M per year.
Im also calling Cleveland..
The only exception would be if you think Mariota is going to have an Andrew Luck-type impact in Philly. But if there were a reasonable chance of Reese thinking that, Mariota would be gone by #9 anyway.
Darn you for beating me to it
But it's all moot. Mariotta isn't getting to us at #9.
He's going to the Mets!
If you're Reese, you know a couple of other teams are interested, and you find one willing to swap 1sts and throw in next year's 3rd. Essentially, the difference being next year's 1st round pick.
Do you bypass the extra value to keep him away from the Eagles, knowing Kelly really wants the guy? I think I would. The Eagles would likely be picking no earlier than mid first round (and likely late, unfortunately), so although the value is there I think I'd rather avoid strengthening a division opponent.
That said, I thought this was a weak year for QB's, so M is just the best of a bad bunch. If that's the case, absolutely help your division rival draft a mediocre prospect.
He's going to go #2 IMO. Which is fine by me. Another pass rusher or WR falls to us.
Cleveland will not give the 12 and 19(but then again it is Cleveland), but I can see 12 and their 3rd;Philly would have to give up a ton for us to drop to 20; StLouis/LA and Cleveland could work a good deal.
Not a top 10 pick that can potentially be a franchise QB. Massive difference. Those that think we won't be taking that into consideration are nuts. The value of a potential franchise QB (not saying Mariota is/isn't) may outweigh the "value chart".
This is a team that the owner has made it clear they need a good draft so the #1 pick has to be a key contributor this season in order for Reese and Coughlin to have a secure future.
In what I have seen of Mariota I am not that impressed and dont feel like he will be a great QB but that is just my opinion. He has worked well in that system but that was against college talent. I would love to see the Eagles do something stupid to get this kid. I think they need WRs more than a QB but Chip is much smarter than everyone

Really doubt that. Would much rather have Nassib than Mariota.
CLE trades their 12th and 2nd to the Giants.
PHA trades Bradford and their 20th to CLE for the ninth.
Result:
PHA gets their guy (for basically a 1st)
CLE gets a QB and retains 2 1sts (19 and 20)
Giants drop 3 spots and pick up a high 2nd.
Everybody wins.
Their #1 next year
That LB they just got from Buffalo.

for Mariotta because their need is obvious. Let us hope that they do because they own 2 first round picks (12 & 19) & therefore are more likely to take a chance like this. Also they are not in our division so direct competition would not be a factor in making the deal. How sweet it would be to get a first rounder & also 2 second round picks in a draft where there are so few blue chip players in the 1st round.

but so many things would have to fall into place that as you said, it is a "wild scenario." I like the win-win of the deal though. Crazier things have happened though, so we can hope for it.

If Philly only has to give up Sam Bradford and 20 to move into the top ten, I would flip out.
