Post season comments on Pugh

Bob Snow : 3/24/2015 4:53 pm
Reese on moving Pugh inside...

"It depends on how things shake out, if we can get a big dynamic right tackle via free agency or the draft, Pugh is a guy that fortunately can move in to guard, he can play left tackle, he can play right tackle, so there's a lot of places he can play for us," -JR

Coughlin also agreed with Reese saying Pugh is the current right tackle
"until something better allows us to have some more flexibility," -TC

However they are both very high on Richburg...

"We think he's going to be a terrific player for us, a long time kind of player. He's actually a center, he played center at Colorado State and that's his natural position, he didn't really get to battle at the center spot because we had to use him at guard. I do think his future is at center."-JR
Coughlin added that Richburg is "a highly competitive guy, he's a tough guy, very smart," and predicted that the growth between his rookie and sophomore season would be "outstanding." -TC

I thought it was interesting that Coughlin said "until something better allows us" regarding Pugh. That makes me think they are serious about an upgrade on the right side.
They seem to really like Richburg as a center. I remember hearing Coughlin saying he thinks Richburg will have a tremendous jump from year 1 to year 2.

How do you guys see the right side of the Offensive line shaking out?

Maybe those...

Andrus Peat rumors are true.
Pugh is versatile but imo his best position is LT
raever : 3/24/2015 4:57 pm : link
He's not a natural mauler that you'd prefer at RT or OG. He's more of a finesse guy not a power player. Get a legit LG and leave him where he is would be the optimal situation until he can replace Beatty on the left side in a year or two.
Scherff or Collins would also

be nice right tackles...they both play tackle and guard.
re: Scherff or Collins

could start Day 1 at LG. Next season (or 2017), Pugh goes to LT with Scherff/Collins moving over to RT.
Pugh is a big assett to our team
PatersonPlank : 3/24/2015 5:02 pm : link
The guy can has NFL starter level ability at either Tackle or Guard. I think this is what Coughlin was referring too. If a T comes along that is a real stud, then Pugh can go inside. Not many players can do this.
Both

Reese and Coughlin said in their post-season pressers that how the OL ultimately shakes out depends on the players who are acquired this offseason. They didn't say they prefer Pugh at one position or another. They simply said he is versatile enough to play either spot depending on who else was signed or drafted.

BTW, the transcripts of all of these remarks are still in "News and Notes."
Mixed feelings about Pugh
Ivan15 : 3/24/2015 5:27 pm : link
This is like Diehl all over again. His versatility actually kept him from being the best he could be. His natural position was guard but he kept getting moved around to plug holes.

If Pugh's best position is LT, it would be better if they could (at least) put him at LG this year and then slide him over to LT a couple of years down the road. But 2015 is an "all in" year for the Giants and I think they feel better about possibly integrating a new LG into the lineup than trying to develop a new RT this year. So I think Pugh stays put this year and they find a new LG in the draft or free agency.
I don't necessarily see the power
Lionhart28 : 3/24/2015 5:36 pm : link
from Pugh's game I'd like in guard. Not really sure how he translates other than his feet.

Said he see's the Giants drafting 2 OLinemen this draft, and I agree completely, we all know we need to add a free safety, and that player will need to come out of the first 4 rounds, because he will need to have the ability to come right in and contribute, not a developmental player, I believe that we will also see 2 offensive linemen come out of the first four rounds. I also think Steve Brown is still a possibility to be added later, this will not affect anything the Giants do in the drafty though.

The wild card in all this, in my view are the wideouts, if one of the three wideouts are there for the Giants, I also see Parker as a guy that is right there with White and Cooper, I can not see them passing on any of them, if they are all gone, I think it comes down to the Olinemen already covered, Peat, Collins, and Scherff or a pass rushing DE like, Armstead and Fowler, at 6'7 and 292 this kid Armstead is a guy that could be moved inside by Spags and be moved around. I think that Scherff has the edge on the Oline since he is more versatile, if Beatty needs to be replaced for example, since he is in the high contract years, he needs to perform at that level, plus he has been inconsistent. So you could always move a guy like Pugh over to the left tackle position. So I see a guard and a guard/tackle to be drafted. Peat is also higher on the list since he can play both tackle positions.

Bottom line is this, in my opinion, it will be Scherff, Peat, Parker, Cooper, White, Armstead or Fowler in round 1. Depending on who that player is, we should see the Giants drafting a safety, and 2 offensive linemen for certain in the first 4 rounds.

I agree. Pugh who played injured last year has never played anything but LOT in college.

The only thing I see "wrong" with Pugh is even when healthy, he doesn't have the power to be real good at run blocking. We need another Chris Snee in bad way. Williams would benefit the most. Get a power guard in there and Williams can and will get a much higher YPC.

Not in a million years would Reese spend 2 of our 1st 4 picks on OL this year, are you insane! With Schwartz coming back healthy, 1 at most. I feel we already have a starting OG in Herman who would complete the starting OL.
If Reese is talking about a bruising RT, he's talking about
yatqb : 3/24/2015 6:14 pm : link
someone in that 320-335 range. In this draft there's Scherff, Flowers, Darryl Williams, Donovan Smith, Rob Havenstein, Ty Thompson, Austin Shepard and Corey Robinson who fit that description. I'm not too high on any of them aside from the guys who are likely to go in Round 1. Havenstein's OK and Donovan Smith looked much better than expected at the Senior Bowl, but the other guys seems quite immobile to me.

It would be nice to land a bruising Rt in the draft so that we could move Pugh inside. It would be a pleasure to have Schwartz and a top RT side by side. I just wonder how we can accomplish that.

Do any of you see more than I do in the other RTs I listed above?
Cant argue
Glover : 3/24/2015 6:43 pm : link
drafting a RT, lets say Scherff, Peat, Collins, whoever they decide would be able to play RT as a rookie (or even RG as a rookie) would be an improvement at 2 positions at once. But can get get a guy to possibly start at RT in the 2nd round and take Cooper, or White, or Beasley, Shelton, or Gregory? I hope for the latter. Its the latter thinking that got us Beckham at 13. We gotta make shnizzle happen and get a super talented player at 9 and get a RT or a RG in the second round. Please. Let my faith in the personnel department of the Giants pay dividends when they do just that.
Schwartz at RT
EddieNYG : 3/24/2015 7:05 pm : link
I thought Schwartz played well at RT in the Cowboys game before he got hurt again.
Eddie, I thought he looked slow in his set up when pass blocking,
yatqb : 3/24/2015 7:24 pm : link
but considering that he was playing with a bad foot it's hard to know how he'd look when healthy.
He also
RetroJint : 3/24/2015 7:53 pm : link
had a bad hand. Pugh will play most of his Giant career at LOT. He will be a very good one, starting in 16. He played hurt last season. They hsd nobody better. And despite what John Mara says, he is not a guard.
You
PaulN : 3/24/2015 8:28 pm : link
Are nuts if you think Herman is a starting guard, sure he can start and stink, anyone can do that. Reese will draft 2 OLinemen this draft, 1 in the top of the draft for certain, and another mid round player. Bank on that.
I like...
Ed A. : 3/24/2015 8:34 pm : link
Donovan Smith. I think he would make an excellent RT.
I don't see Pugh as a G, he is not a mauler like Snee or Seubert.
213374 : 3/25/2015 12:45 am : link
Plus there has been some question about his strength, which can be corrected, but he doesn't seem like a G.
I've said all along Pugh's best position is LT.
drkenneth : 3/25/2015 7:59 am : link
..I think that's his future.
Finding a spot for Pugh
HomerJones45 : 3/25/2015 8:10 am : link
Seems more a matter of default. He hasn't played particularly well at RT (the injury excuse is speculation based on poor play- was he ever on an injury report this year) so maybe that isn't the best spot, hmmm, he's not a center so that's out, hey how about at guard, well no, perhaps not, what's left? Oh yeah LT.
speculation?
bc4life : 3/25/2015 8:14 am : link
and the fact he wore a brace for many games this season. and talked about the injury w/reporters.
It's not speculation
JonC : 3/25/2015 8:19 am : link
he had a confirmed injured elbow.

If I'm the GM, I'm looking for that bigger bruising RT. Pugh can kick inside according to the brass and other scouts, and I agree with it.
If you stood them side by side and used a tape measure...
Big Blue Blogger : 3/25/2015 8:56 am : link
...you would probably conclude that Schwartz was the right tackle and Pugh was the left guard. If those were the only two positions to fill, you might even line them up that way. The better scenario, I think, is to find a left guard, leave Pugh at tackle and insert Schwartz for Jerry. So far, free agency hasn't produced anything; maybe the draft will.

I'd love to agree with you but I just don't think Reece is that smart or understands how bad we need two starting upgrades to our o-line. You watch as Reece gives in to temptation and takes a WR in round 1 totally fucking our season!

Agreed! Reese is so dumb he spells his name wrong!
pugh injured his
area junc : 3/25/2015 9:15 am : link
elbow in the jets preseason game. so he played the entire season with it.

that said, not thrilled with what i've seen from him so far. he's struggling at T - don't u think Tom & Jerry accounted for his injury when making the very candid remarks above?

they are saying that - despite his injury - they want to get a player who's better than Pugh (who is a 1st round pick) to play RT.

uncharacteristically bold statement from the Giants imo
That's how I read their comments as well
JonC : 3/25/2015 9:17 am : link
It was a shift from previous comments. They can do better at RT, we'll have to wait and see how it goes down.
