I hated Fewell's read and react defense and Spags was a lot more aggressive in his first go around here. Now, they said the same thing about the offense last year with McAdoo coming in that it was going to look similar to KG's offense, but anyone could see it was clearly different. Hoping for the same here.

coach speak but remember when Spags left and Fewell came on Coughlin said the same thing that it would be the same system that Spags ran and it clearly wasn't. I think we'll see a lot less Tampa 2

I dont remember the Giants ever saying that it would look similar to KG's offense. I remember them saying they would take elements of KG's offense and the things that worked well.

D won't be the same. other than DRC and PA will cover solo, 1S down low/1S back, and a 4-3 look. All basic stuff.
The difference will be better LBs, and quicker LBs and a quicker down low S that will make for a better blitz package.
And on 3rd and 20 the middle won't be no-mans land for a 1st down gain by the O.
Don't get too caught up in whether they use the same "defensive looks"
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/25/2015 10:58 am : link
It's not about the formations they line up in. It's about the way each play is approached and what you want the defense to do. Ultimately a 4-3 defense is going to look like a 4-3 defense.
Jackson is coming off microfracture surgery.

I'd be concerned relying on him for starter type contribution, especially at a new position.

must have blocked that 1 year stint as coordinator out of my mind, for all intents and purposes Fewell was the next tenured DC after Spags.
JonC: That point is often overlooked.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/25/2015 11:47 am : link
Whatever his inclination or lineage may have been, Fewell never had the personnel here to run a real Tampa-2. I think he was starting to install more of it when Goff and Thomas got hurt. After that, it wasn't really on option. Who was going to cover the deep middle? Greg Jones? Mark Herzlich? Chase Blackburn? Jon Beason arrived a month into the 2013 season, so even if he created some possibilities, the playbook was pretty much set.
Bennett
AcidTest : 3/25/2015 11:49 am : link
Jackson has no experience at safety, has never played in an NFL regular season game, and was a WR a few years ago IIRC. He's also coming off micro fracture surgery. But why worry? We're loaded at safety.

JonC : 3/25/2015 11:53 am : link
Yup, he ran it quite a bit during that brief period where Goff and T2 were healthy (2010?), and not much after they both went down.

Les, I think safeties are CB that "can't cover"...Now it takes a CB that likes to hit, (I bet Prince would be a great FS). Better a CB converts to safety then the other way around.

See I took this statement to as not a comparison to Fewell, but rather it would look similar to SPAGS old Giants defense but with obvious personnel changes.
Coughlin has a PR problem with respect to defensive coordinators
GeofromNJ : 3/25/2015 2:42 pm : link
He replaced Fewell because he thought Spags was better, but when asked if the defense will be better because of the change in coordinators, he doesn't want to say yes because to do so is to criticize Fewell whom he likes personally and has an obligation not to throw under the bus. But now he sounds kinda silly. If the defense will be better because of personnel, why did he replace Fewell?
My idea for what to do with PATs
FatHeadTommy : 3/25/2015 3:26 pm : link
Leave everything exactly the way it is, but allow the defensive team's coach to determine which player from the opposing team has to kick it. Imagine some of the great possibilities - like Wilfork having to kick a PAT.

agree that the transition from CB to free safety is easier than vice versa, but you still need a certain amount of speed/athleticism, tackling ability and instincts/intelligence to play the position and experience/snaps matter especially against QBs that are mobile and/or run a lot of play action passes. chykie last played safety in high school and not exclusively at that position. and that's just free safety, strong safety is another matter completely.
