NFT: Anyone use their home Direct TV account at vacation home?

steve in ky : 3/25/2015 11:14 am
Does anyone have any experience in how to set it up to where you take your Direct TV receiver with you to use there when spending time at a vacation home?

I have searched online and find conflicting information. Some wording seems to imply you can't do it while others sounds like you can. It seems crazy to subscribe to a package with most channels and in addition pay extra for the sports packages and then on top of that have to pay monthly for two separate accounts when only needing to ever use one at a time and could simply take the receiver with you as long as you install a second signal dish at the home.

I'm hoping a few here has done this and can offer some advise of how best to approach Direct TV about setting it up on one account.

Thanks

how to mount a dish yourself and it will be zero issue.
I used to, but that's a good 5 years ago and things may have changed

but back then, it was just leave the sat without the phone line plugged in, and let DTV know that you couldn't have a phone line on that receiver because it wasn't near a jack. Worked almost perfectly, although things like PPV were a little quirky.
*receiver* without the phone line, not sat.

Thanks, Where would you even go about buying a HD Direct TV dish to do yourself providing I could even figure out how to install it?
ebay
MookGiants : 3/25/2015 11:21 am : link
I have bought one myself and each week I set it up for our tailgate at giants games.

It's really not hard to do it yourself. I figured it out myself by just researching. The biggest key is it has to be level. If the mast is not level, you are pissing in the wind.
It will depend on how far away you are from your home.

You may lose local channels if you're outside of the spot beam. I've taken receivers to vacation spots as well as brought a dish with me.

So you simply plugged in your receiver in the second home and it worked without having to sync in anyway?
You can get everything you would need

If you email me ill give you my other email and ill help any way I can, I know way too much about this shit.

So it would be a mistake to call Direct TV and pay them to install the dish only?

Solid Signal
Link - ( New Window )
they won't do it
MookGiants : 3/25/2015 11:25 am : link
just keep them out of the loop. You can do it yourself, trust me. If you get the mast level wherever you mount it it will be a piece of cake (assuming you have no issues as far as line of sight to southern sky)

You might find an installer in the area who will install your equipment for cash. But I would try it yourself first.
Dish installation is not difficult.

The only special tools you'll need are a small magnetized level and a compass.

OK, Thanks. I probably will take you up on your offer about e-mailing you. It likely will be a project for early summer so if you wouldn't mind I may e-mail you when I get ready to start and get your advice or with any questions I can't figure out. I'll try and do a little research in the mean time. Thanks again
no problem

Thanks Peter, I guess I'll give it a shot. I'm not a fan of heights so hopefully I won't have to mount it to the roof (grin)
Don't contact DTV
pjcas18 : 3/25/2015 11:45 am : link
especially if you are using any of their equipment.

I believe if you signed a contract with them there is a clause that says you won't remove the equipment from your home.

I think they have a specific RV/mobile contract they might ask you to use.

reason being people used to get an extra receiver and send it to their father in florida and its $10 a month for the new receiver and your dad now has full DTV for $10.

Do you know what they charge for the RV/Mobile fee? Is it just a simple add on type of fee to your existing account? I really am not trying to cheat them and would only be using it with the same receiver in one home at a time but don't want to pay over a hundred a month for a second account just for when on vacations.

My dish is on the side of the house. I wasn't going up on the roof. Some people mount them on a pole stuck in the ground.

I'd follow the advice of Mook, etc.

If you only have it on one home at a time, I think they'd probably turn a blind eye to it.

steve from my regular email
They can't tell where your reciever is without the phone line
antdog24 : 3/25/2015 12:17 pm : link
even then i'm not sure they care all that much. I borrow a reciever from my father in law who pays for the full premium package. I put the HD dish on the roof myself and have been running like this for about 5 years.
^^^^^
pjcas18 : 3/25/2015 12:18 pm : link
is what they're trying to stop because that is theft or at worst a violation of the contract.

What you are doing Steve I don't think they care about.
^^^^ Judge all you want
antdog24 : 3/25/2015 12:34 pm : link
the point is, satellite transmission is a one way signal.

so that makes it okay to steal it?
I'm not judging
pjcas18 : 3/25/2015 12:38 pm : link
at all. I have zero issues with what you're doing.

I was simply pointing out to steve why DTV has the clause in their contract about the equipment remaining in the home. It's to prevent what you're doing.
I'm not stealing
antdog24 : 3/25/2015 12:43 pm : link
it's being paid for by a family member. Think of it as a remote living room.
you can justify it any way you like
YAJ2112 : 3/25/2015 12:43 pm : link
but it's stealing.

antdog24 : 3/25/2015 12:44 pm : link
ok, im a dirty lil theif... but so is DirecTV
so now it's okay
YAJ2112 : 3/25/2015 12:45 pm : link
because you feel DTV overcharges people for their service.
Hahahah
antdog24 : 3/25/2015 12:46 pm : link
you guys are so awesome and predictable. The self righteous high horses are out in full force.
just admit that you are stealing
YAJ2112 : 3/25/2015 12:47 pm : link
and move on.
I already did
antdog24 : 3/25/2015 12:47 pm : link
and you move on.
Not self righteous. Not on a high horse.
Peter in Atl : 3/25/2015 12:49 pm : link
Just stating a fact that what you are doing is theft of services.
It's 100%
pjcas18 : 3/25/2015 12:49 pm : link
stealing.

I wasn't judging you though because I don't care if you steal from DTV, but you can spin it how you want.

And I am dropping DTV in June when my contract ends because while they aren't thieves they're expensive as hell compared with comparable service on FiOS.

I might try and find some way to get Sunday Ticket through them only, but I don't think they offer that anymore.
cool
antdog24 : 3/25/2015 12:49 pm : link
thanks!
