and this is just another thing that makes me doubt him more.
He's versatile and I could see a smart DC knowing how to utilize him well. But I don't see even a glimmer of star potential and I think it's kind of shocking that he's considered a Top 5 prospect right now.
Odi is such a Giants pick. Too bad there are so many question marks.
Dupree screams Giants too, but just has too much "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" for my taste.
Beasley is that guy. I know I'm late on that bandwagon but he's a stud. I like Gregory too but Gregory's potential feels really dependent on situation/scheme.
He has to be in the mix at #9. Not a popular pick for top 10 but would anyone be shocked if the Giants took a big, athletic DE and then raved about his athletic ability afterwards?

Why would he be in the mix at 9? There are too many question marks with him..

Not skilled as a pass rusher. Won't win around the edge often and must prove he can counter back inside. Has dealt with two surgeries on his hip and missed all of 2013 because of it. Lateral agility is limited. Range in pursuit in question. Could be mismatched if forced to cover in space. More unit fit than talented player.

Pass rush arsenal is still a work in progress. Lacks the explosive burst off the edge or nifty change of direction expected of a first-round pick.
His stats
Total 12.5 sacks and 24.5 tackles for loss..
Amd he has had hip surgery as well.
Compare that to Beasley who has 33 sacks and 52.5 tackles for loss..
or
Dupree has 23.5 sacks.. leading the SEC and 37 tackles for loss
There is no way this guy will be in consideration at 9...

Except that Dupree led the SEC in sacks.. and has produced at his level.. and he was moved around on the defense constantly never being allowed to settle in at one position.. The story is they used him wherever they needed him.. coverage.. as a LB.. as a DE.. two point.. three point.. in the middle.. as a spy on some plays..
I wouldnt label Dupree as " plays like Jane " because he actually has production..
Beasley is a better prospect.. but has never played @ 246.. Dupree is a notch below athletically and is easily 20 pounds heavier.. If both were available.. I would take Beasley..
I agree with you. I feel Beasley and Dupree have the best chance at the Pro level. Gregory seems a little lanky, Shane Ray is explosive but we have only seen one year of high productivity and Fowler looks the part but I don't see the production, especially for 3rd overall as some are predicting.
Beasley is the kind of player that a DC could build his defense around. With JPP possibly playing on the franchise tag next year, we need to bring in a edge rusher. If he makes it to our pick, he has to be considered.

Gregory is steadily gaining weight.. He is up to 243.. I have read that Nebraska wanted him to play very light and that he got sick before the combine ( the flu ) which caused him to drop some weight.. I think he will probably get to around 255ish eventually with an NFL training program..
Why is he this far ahead of the deep pass rush field on mocks? Is he really that good? I don't hate him because I think he could be good but he's a little overrated imo. So many other options at pass rusher that I don't think he's a slam dunk top 5 pick at all. Solid player but franchise pass rusher? All this said I would still take him at 9. But I'd prefer Beasley.
I think you're half right. Only four of the eight necessary inputs were available from the Combine: weight, bench, and both jumps. He didn't do speed or agility drills in Indy because of his hamstring.
and Ray, though the latter was a little surprising. Ray's on the small side physically and the SPARQ reinforces the fact. Good player, big heart, but needs to play in a 3-4.
Odi is a really interesting wildcard for NYG. #9 is likely to be too high for him, given the medicals, but he checks off the boxes for a 4-3 DE.
