NFT: S.I Yankee preview

ODB13 : 3/25/2015 7:49 pm
I am sorry I have to agree with this. I think us Yankee fans are in for another long year. Our lineup is no better then last year even with Arod. And our rotation is a huge question mark filled with injury concerns, our pen has a chance to be solid but can betances save some games before people call this guy the next great closer. He is not having a good spring either. Hope I am wrong but if they finish in 4th for the 3rd year in a row I won't be shocked

I'm going to go ahead and post this here...

RAB notes about the farm including velo for pitchers (Encinas got some rave reviews today rehabbing TJS) and the releases from this past week.

And they were 2nd last year and 3rd in 2013...
Dunedin81 : 3/25/2015 8:02 pm : link
they haven't finished 4th in the division in 23 years.
I thought
Semipro Lineman : 3/25/2015 8:03 pm : link
the SI meant Staten Island Yankees and I was wondering how do they already know which prospects are reporting there.
They have a solid defense and a little bit of speed at the top...
Dunedin81 : 3/25/2015 8:08 pm : link
they need bounceback seasons from the middle of the lineup and health from the rotation. If healthy this could be a 90 win team. If unhealthy it could be a 75 win team.

The thing that makes me think they've got a decent shot to make a run is that the rest of the division sucks. Baltimore has Buck and so somehow will scrounge their way into being semi-competitive, even though they've lost a lot. Boston and Toronto should have very good lineups, though Boston's in particular is overrated and has a lot more risk than the talking heads are suggesting. But both of their rotations suck, Toronto's is two deep and Boston has five 3-4 types.
no way they finish near .500

Yeah? So they lost Kuroda from last year, they get Nova back, and their lineup from Opening Day last year is improved at two positions and a wash at short. They have bench options for the first time in forever and a little bit of depth should position players go down. Their bullpen should be comparable or better. Last year they had 85 wins. No chance thye're near .500?
Thanks for the link Dunedin...

I've been so busy lately I've missed a lot of news. The 20 second pitch clock was news to me. Can they possibly be serious about a pitch clock?

What happens when there is a runner on base? Is the pitch clock still in effect? Just wondering, as it would seem to really give a runner a tremendous jump if there are 19 seconds on the clock. Have you heard any details on how this is playing out in games?
I don't think we'll see the time clock anytime soon...
Dunedin81 : 3/25/2015 8:44 pm : link
unless it really changes the pace of minor league games. I think it's just trying to get young players in the habit of moving games along.
I agree...
Dan in the Springs : 3/25/2015 8:46 pm : link
just was wondering if you've heard anything at all about runners using the clock to their advantage. I imagine if I were leading off base and watching that clock that it would make a huge difference to see the pitcher as the clock winds down.

Then again, maybe I'd get caught leaning and after getting picked off once or twice I'd give up that strategy.
I haven't heard much of anything about it...
Dunedin81 : 3/25/2015 8:52 pm : link
they used it in the AFL and I think they just adjusted. I get the opposition to it; baseball has its ghosts like no other sport, and in this case you're going to do something you know is likely to have limited impact on pace of play.
RAB on the bullpen prospects...

I wonder if Lindgren gets a shot based on performance. He has looked pretty filthy this spring. So has Pazos for that matter, but he's probably not an option.

I guessed wrong I did not even check the standings after the last two years aside from Rivera's last game in 2013 and jeters final game last year this team bored me heading into the football season so i didn't watch much.
Yeah they were boring as fuck last year...
Dunedin81 : 3/25/2015 9:27 pm : link
it got marginally better after they made those mid-season moves but then they fell out of the race.
An Opening Day Roster
RetroJint : 3/25/2015 9:36 pm : link
that includes Ryan, Romine, Drew, Jones & Young is unbearable. CC is a mess. His breaking ball is terrible. Eovaldi is basically a one-pitch starter. However, there is plenty to watch. Some interesting young talent poised to break in. A-Rod, Beltran & Tex- who has something left? I am ready for the season. Piss on winter.
Yeah but with the exception of Drew...
Dunedin81 : 3/25/2015 9:48 pm : link
who is, pathetically, an upgrade over our 2B situation last year, they're all backups. And other than Ryan, who is redundant, they make sense as backups.

I loved the Prado trade last year I think the Lineup got better after we got him He got some key hits for us I was not thrilled after we traded him to Miami a few months ago
Prado was a decent player...
Dunedin81 : 3/25/2015 10:12 pm : link
but he was never going to duplicate his performance at the tail end of last year. We sold high.
They

Will be pathetic this season, last place finish, this organization better wake the fuck up. The Mets will take over this town in no time flat. Hate to say it but it's what they deserve.

Again, certainly possible but compare the roster they fielded last year to the one they field this year. Kuroda and DRob are losses, Eovaldi, Miller and Didi are additions, plus Headley who wasn't on the roster last year. This OD roster is much better than last year's, and last year's won 85 games. If they're healthy they're not a last place team. And if they aren't healthy, the Rays will still probably dwell in the cellar.

I don't know about that. We could if used him this year. Espeacaljy when Drew is batting under .200 in mid June. Much rather of resigned Macarthy

I don't know about that. We could of used him this year. especially when Drew is batting under .200 in mid June. Much rather of resigned Brandon McCarthy then trade prado for a career 15-35 NL pitcher with a 5 ERA. Sorry about this double post this phone sucks to type on
McCarthy was lightning in a bottle too...

has been mediocre everywhere but his couple months in NY, first year in forever he was healthy. NFW he earns that contract. Eovaldi has upside and is under team control for a few more years.
This is less than promising...

I wouldn't mind seeing Warren at the 5. Eno @ FanGraphs had a piece on him today - the Greinke comp is pie-in-the-sky but the rest of his comp list is surprisingly strong.

Yanks aren't a bad team
djm : 3/26/2015 2:00 pm : link
but they need a lot of things to right in 2015 that were kinda bad the last 1-2 years. That's asking a lot. Yanks are gonna need at least some of these guys, who are all coming off injury and/or ineffectiveness, to play well:

Tex
Arod
CC
Pineda
Nova
Tanaka
Beltran

Then you have some questions at second and short, and questions in the BP even though on paper the BP should at least be solid...

That's a lot of questions. If things break somewhere in the middle I think you have a good fielding team with decent pitching and so so hitting. Girardi is a good manager....add it all up and you have a 86 win team. Yippee....

Yankees announce they've unconditionally released RHP Jared Burton from his minor league contract.
Refsnyder with another double

and another error on a tween hop that should have been "easily" made - got caught in the middle. Did not look comfortable at all.
So the SB Nation MLB preview came out today
Audible : 3/26/2015 5:02 pm : link
I like SB Nation in general, and Brisbee in particular, but I'm trying to wrap my head around the preview, because it projects a world in which Tanaka wins the Cy, Ellsbury wins the AL MVP (!?), Refsnyder wins ROY (!!??), and the Yankees finish in last. Yes, that would be the Yankees winning every major individual award and finishing in last place. I'm not mad or anything, I just find it kind of incoherent.

If nothing else, even if we accept that voting for major awards has evolved to recognize that individual players are almost entirely not responsible for the quality of the other 24 players on the roster, there's no way in hell that a player with so much value tied up in speed and defense is winning the MVP on a last-place team.
