Haven't had one of these threads in awhile. Its probably a little bit more than half way through the season. I have to say I Still love the show and the suspense/drama it supplies in specific scenes represent some of the best on TV. However the plot line of this season has been mediocre at best. They have been painfully slow with Paige thing I mean painfully slow. I understand it takes time to develop the plot but it's moving along at a glacial pace and what makes it worse is you know at this point they are heading to cliff hang it till next season. I think it's obvious that the creators of the show have mad a concerted effort this season to dehumanize the Russian cause. I think they felt the public was sort of rooting for them too much the first few seasons. Pushing Phillip on a 16 year old shows you how depraved they can be in the pursuit of their cause.
That scene last night with Elizabeth and the old woman was one of the best in the 3 years of the show. also Phillips rant on Gabriel at the end came out of nowhere, nobody can do the extremes like him. Stan still is excellent. I like the dynamic between him and Oleg what do you guys think about the defector? spy or no? Nina has become completely dark inside. Need more of her. Interesting how Oleg's dad is totally keeping him out of the loop on his plans with Nina.
actually, I think Nina's a distraction at this point

I'm not seeing the point to keeping her around other than the fact that Annet Mahendru is gorgeous.

They're definitely making sure the audience appreciates that P&E are not good people, you're right about that. Even though necklacing the SA guy last week wasn't their idea, they let it happen (and goddamn, between that and folding Annalise into the suitcase, this show goes beyond any other non-HBO show in the horrific violence department). I don't mind the slow pace because there's still plenty of tension, and if the previous two seasons are any guide, they will be an explosion of activity soon.

I think the defector is on the level. Stan's just cracking up as his life is falling apart. He is adrift, with his marriage clearly over now and the crippling guilt he carries for Nina. He wants so desperately to believe that Zinaida is a plant because it represents the only way he could possibly save Nina.

Gabriel is a great character. Love Frank Langella.

One thing bugged me last week - where the hell did the ANC guy get the gas can and tire? He just popped around the corner and came back with them. He ostensibly rode with P&E to this place, so you'd think they have noticed.
btw

Looked up Annet Mahendru to see how to spell her name and saw on Wiki that she lived in East Meadow as a teenager.
Oh I forgot

Martha remains the most blissfully clueless character in television history. I though in that scene with Phillip last week when she confronted him and he brought her in for the hug it was might to be time for her to meet her maker. Greg I agree little things are getting sloppier this season. I though that too about the SA scene. Frankly that whole story line had me confused from the beginning. I'm having a hard time making the SA-Russian connection, I guess since Reagan refused to condemn Apartheid, the Soviets would naturally take the side of Anti-Apartheid.
And trying to figure out Agent Aderholt
Stu11 : 3/26/2015 9:28 am : link
was he sent as a mole to find out what the hell is going on with this FBI screw-up office? His cryptic comments are interesting...
the scene with the old lady was gut wrenching
Greg from LI : 3/26/2015 11:40 am : link
After Todd was (briefly) spared last week, I thought that she was going to make it through the scene. When Elizabeth gives her real name, that gives you a sinking feeling, and then when she answers "Russia" to the question about her mother, you know it's all over.
I don't think Martha is clueless
Gary from The East End : Admin : 3/26/2015 11:51 am : link
She is (or at least was) in willful denial. I think her story is about to get very interesting.

Nina seems like a distraction now, but I wonder if they have a plan to bring her back to the US next season and integrate her into the main plotline.

One thing that I think a lot of people don't appreciate is just how damaged Stan is. I think he still has PTSD and other issues from his time undercover and a lot of his bad decisions flow from that.

Also, that old lady was right, Elizabeth is just straight up evil.
Yea Gary truthfully you are right about Martha
Stu11 : 3/26/2015 12:15 pm : link
it's fun to make fun of her, but I too am not buying that happy homemaker scene last night. Something is up there. Stan is damaged in a number of ways. I think Nina in prison was throw away stuff, however I think this plot line could pick up between her and the refusnick scientist. Not to mention Oleg's dad may be trying to work a little Nina action in there. Yea Greg that scene last night with the old lady and the drama involved is what makes this show stand out. yep as soon as she mentioned Russia you knew it was curtains. I'm glad they cooled the wheels on the 16 year old plot line for awhile that is really creepy. I though the defector was going to make her moves on Stan last night, but that blank look she got on her face instantly when he left leads me to believe she just might be faking the whole thing.
Martha knows who Clark is now
Greg from LI : 3/26/2015 12:22 pm : link
Or, at least, she knows he's not with the FBI, so he conned her into committing espionage. She's a desperately lonely woman who has made the conscious decision to shut her eyes to the reality of the man she "married" and continue the illusion of having a normal married life.
What are Martha's options at this point
Gary from The East End : Admin : 3/26/2015 12:50 pm : link
Best case scenario is that she cuts a deal, flips on Clark/Phillip and gets away with little or no jail time.

There's no way this ends well for her. When it's over, she'll be in jail or dead, so why not play out the string for as long as it lasts?
it's a can't miss show for me
santacruzom : 3/26/2015 12:53 pm : link
but it's hard for me to determine why, other than the inherently interesting premise. It's the bleakest shit out there.

I keep waiting for Philip's mere recognition of his transgressions evolves into a rejection of them, and it doesn't look like it's going to happen. The show hasn't done a great job establishing why Philip in particular would be so loyal to Communism that he's willing to destroy so many lives. Sure, he found out about his kid relatively late in the series, but it's not like he's committing his acts with the belief that they'll swing the Afghan conflict.
I read an interview with series creator Joe Weisberg
Greg from LI : 3/26/2015 12:58 pm : link
Who was an actual CIA operative earlier in life, and he said that, in a similar real-life situation, the unsuspecting American wife of a Russian illegal committed suicide almost immediately after being told the truth about her husband. It's obviously a brutal truth to have to face, and Martha likely just can't bring herself to do so. I can't imagine she survives in the end, though.

The most interesting thing about last night's episode is that it's the first time we've ever seen Elizabeth show any hesitation about carrying out her mission. Phillip's been cynical from the first episode, when he suggested defecting, but Elizabeth has always been a true believer. She's finally starting to waver now that she is starting to notice how easily ordinary people, people like her children, can get trapped into something evil. This is a woman who just a few weeks ago nonchalantly dropped a car on a poor random bastard just to create a job opening at Northrup Grumman, but now she's shedding tears about having to kill an innocent.
Phillip isn't loyal to the Soviet Union at this point
Greg from LI : 3/26/2015 1:02 pm : link
He's loyal to his wife. He wants out but he won't do it alone......yet.

We already know from the preview a few weeks ago that Paige is going to confront her parents soon about all the things in their life that don't make sense. That is when things will start to get interesting.
Agree that they're more focused
RB^2 : 3/26/2015 1:13 pm : link
on the fact that P&E are actively trying to advance the nihilistic and fundamentally inhumane Russian cause at the expense of innocent victims, not just running around having these exciting adventures.

They occasionally showed stuff like that in the past (Philip killing the kid in the Afghan restaurant, etc.) but they're hitting that note a lot more this year. These are truly vile people.

Also, I hope the real FBI is more competent than these mopes who can't get out of their own way. How do they not to a blanket bag check as soon as they found the bug while the guy with the metal detector sweeps the office?
If Philip's not careful
RB^2 : 3/26/2015 1:18 pm : link
Gabriel's going to have to make a business decision about him.
Martha
teso56 : 3/26/2015 1:19 pm : link
I love the show but I stated this two years ago and I'll state it again - the Martha marriage is just too surreal and hard to believe. Mistress or girlfriend yes but the marriage angle is just hard to understand. She never once saw his apartment? Another thing hard to buy. I think they need them to be married to play out the pending storyline of Martha's possible loyalty but i thought all along this was a stretch.

Stan is a loose cannon and that was evident the moment he shot Vlad in season 1.
BTW, who else loved Oleg's grin
Greg from LI : 3/26/2015 1:26 pm : link
when Stan griped that he probably enjoyed busting Stan's head open? Being slightly out of focus on the edge of the screen made that a wonderfully subtle moment, and a rare bit of humor. The first two seasons had a lot of sly humor but this season has been so consistently dark and grim.
yep this season has become really dark
Stu11 : 3/26/2015 1:43 pm : link
Phillip really is pushing the envelope with Gabriel. I think the one saving grace for him is that I'm sure the P & E won't look favorably upon Gabriel as a handler for not being able to keep one of his people in line so I'm sure he'll turn it on overdrive with Elizabeth to get her to keep him in line. It's funny the first two seasons they went back and forth, but you got the feeling Phillip really cares about Elizabeth. This season though he's been absolutely brutal to her. That was her first flinch last night about the cause. I think when the lady asked her if she had children and when she replied yes, she immediately said then how do you do this? I think that really took her by surprise and was like a left cross right on the jaw.
I read an interview with one of the show's producers....
Bluenatic : 3/26/2015 3:39 pm : link
... in which he said that the Martha character was intended to have a short, 2-3 episode arc but that the actress, Allison Wright, tested so well with viewers that they decided to expand her role.
Elizabeth
Mr. Nickels : 3/26/2015 5:27 pm : link
is sexy as hell but I really hope she dies in the end of the show and not in a way that makes you love her like Walter White or Tony Soprano
I would guess....
Mike From Brielle : 3/26/2015 9:53 pm : link
that you don't have to be a sociopath to be a good spook but it helps (Gabriel - old spook). I imagine that they screen for certain psychological profiles during training. I think I read someplace that people who have to do that type of work burn out usually before their mid forties or earlier.
