over there all the time. Pommes Frites is something of an institution. Hopefully nobody died but I don't see how that could be possible barring a miracle.
My brother used to live just a few blocks from there over in Alphabet City, I've been down there a hundred times. Hopefully most of the tenants weren't inside at the time of collapse.
NEW YORK (AP) — Firefighters say a building on fire in New York City has collapsed and at least one person has been critically injured.
Orange flames and black smoke are billowing from the facade and roof of the five-story building in Manhattan, near New York University and the Washington Square Park area.
There are some reports of an explosion before the fire. The area is being evacuated.
The Fire Department of New York says other people are being evaluated at the scene.
surprise but NYPD sources are saying "likely gas leak" though CNN suggested grease from Pommes frites.
When's the last time there was a grease explosion?
Jcn,
No idea. I was just watching CNN and they mentioned at least twice "the restaurant below is a french fries place which could suggest grease causing it" but NYPD sources apparently think it's a gas fire. Gas leak sure seems like the cause of most of these.
A grease fire doesn't take out a 5 story building in an instant Â
Which would explain why the owner of Big Gay Ice cream shop was going nuts on Twitter (the address was reported as 125 east 7th initially... which is where his shop is).

actually got video of most of what happened Link - ( New Window )
Love how the guy who posted that gratuitously put in that he "ran back to try and help people" while he is still taking the video. Just saying, totally unnecessary.
Was going to a vendor dinner on 2nd tonight like 2 blocks from there, obviously not now. I'm in the west village and have great view of across town, smoke is pretty cleared up now, but looks like a second building isn't going to make it.
shows a retired firefighter, apparently, who checked on each floor looking for people still in the building and got out just before it collapses. What a brave thing to do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoy3pIiTQlM - ( New Window )
that is an amazing job (luck?) by the retired fire fighter. Balls of steel to go up each floor, and then apparently gave recon info to the first active firefighters to arrive on scene. Before all that, instructing the very frightened woman how to release and lower the ladder at the bottom of the fire escape.
Our building just had to announce that the smoke smell isn't from our building but from the collapsed building 35 blocks away. Crazy.
same here. Wind must be blowing the smoke uptown?
Hope everyone is alright.

Hey, is "No Idea" still open? They used to have a great Super Bowl contest back in the day.

I wouldn't say explosion, but it was popular in the late 70's.

Building 7 truthers. "NOBAMA!" BBI can be crazy at times but..good Lord!

1. Norman Reedus from The Walking Dead was randomly on the scene
2. NYC legend Robin Byrd was giving the play by play... yeah THAT Robin Byrd.
I thought initially it was over by Paul's Burger but it's a block away. The fire was roaring and I could see it above the cooper union building
One thing you can always rely on is CNN not having a clue what actually happened
Was Don Lemon speculating that the building was sucked into a black hole or that the explosion was caused by someone with Old Timer's Disease?
Yeah, technically, but my dorm was on 9th and 3rd
Thank you. That statement by CNN is borderline slanderous. I'd have my attorney look into that if I owned Pommes Frites.
Fucking media is an abject embarrassment. I hate mentioning that I'm a part of it, but we, at least, research what we say before we go on air with it.
