NFT: David Ortiz lashes...er...speaks out in The Player's Tribune

Dunedin81 : 3/26/2015 10:18 pm
Even the written statements of baseball's resident nice guy are littered with F-bombs. Anyway, it's a lengthy justification for the failed test and his purported PED-free performance ever since. Swing away. Just make sure Dustin Pedroia isn't in the way when you do.

Nice read

, this is from the Jeter online magazine? I should check it out more often.

The start is interesting where the baseball secret police come to his house in the DR at seven am. I did not realize the testing was that robust.
It really isn't...
Dunedin81 : 3/26/2015 10:34 pm : link
80 times in what, ten years? That's less than once a month, and the bulk of that is during the season so that the offseason might see one or two tests.
Gotcha
rocco8112 : 3/26/2015 10:41 pm : link
I know next to nothing regarding the specifics of how it works. This article does a good job of slanting it his way, which is the point after all.

there really should be resolution of the 2003 test
WeatherMan : 3/26/2015 10:44 pm : link
it's bullshit to have names leaked without knowing what they tested for, just publish the whole damn thing and be done with it.
Ah yes...
Homersimpson : 3/26/2015 10:50 pm : link
the old I never "knowingly" took steroids angle.

It's so tired. The whole thing is so tired, and his rage for being questioned is so typical. If he did, if he didn't...he's still a great hitter, but a really unlikeable figure if you're not a Sox fan.
Aside from the near-free pass on roids...
Dunedin81 : 3/26/2015 10:54 pm : link
he gets from the same mouth-breathers who want to crucify A-Rod, what annoys most of us is the fact that for a decade plus he has had a rep as a supremely nice guy when there are multiple instances of him being a major prick. And this piece reads like that major prick talking.
for better or worse he's the face of the franchise
WeatherMan : 3/26/2015 10:58 pm : link
certainly has had his share of anger issues though, beating the hell out of that phone was insane.

Beat the hell out of that phone, but when Pedroia has to duck so you can do it you've got an anger issue.

chris r is a troll in the purest sense of the world. He says the dumbest, most outlandish shit (seemingly) and then sits back with his bowl of Captain Crunch and watches everybody freak out over it.

I've been ignoring him for years. He sucks and always will.

Ortiz has failed the same amount of MLB drug tetsts
arniefez : 3/27/2015 7:55 am : link
as Alex Rodriguez. Not failing a MLB drug test is in no way connected with being clean. Do you think Ortiz is tested more often than Arod? How many tests did Arod fail since 2009? Was he clean?

He is the worst. However, I'm not a big fan of any Boston area sports reporter/columnist, really. I didn't like Edes at all. He always had to sneak some sort of racist comment into his pieces. Mazz was just as bad as CHB. Simmons is too douchey. Abraham is tolerable I guess.

The only one I really like, and I really, really like him is Art Martone. When he was with Projo, his pieces were fantastic. Informative, objective and he seems like a really nice guy.
The obsession continues...

Not nearly as strange as the rest of the sports world's obsession with Alex Rodriguez
He's the embodiment of everything we hate...
Dunedin81 : 3/27/2015 8:43 am : link
about Boston sports. For decades they have held themselves out to be (and their fans, and the local and national media have held them out to be) poorer and grittier and more lovable and cleaner than the Evil Empire. Papi is none of those things. He failed as many tests as A-Rod and hasn't manned up to actually taking anything, then or now. His anger issues don't get the attention they deserve. Enhanced performance or not he's a great hitter, but in everything else he's a phony.
A nice rebuttal to some of the substance of Ortiz's piece...

Shut. Up.
I still think
djm : 3/27/2015 11:01 am : link
the fans have been the ones cheated in all of this steroid talk. Instead of talking about baseball and players and stats we are talking about supplements, drugs, steroids, tests, invalidated or validated stats and HOF worthiness.

Between the contracts and steroid talk I am running out of patience and it isn't the money or the steroids that is ruining the game. It's the media and fan base that needs to talk about this shit day in and day out.

Ortiz cna eat a dick for all I care but I don't hate the guy because of the link to steroids. I hate him because he fucking destroys Yankee pitching and takes 45 minutes to round the basis and when someone tries pitching inside to him, he acts like it's an affront to mankind. Same with Manny Dooshebag. Fuck em both.

ORtiz may in fact be telling the truth. We don't know shit.
and he most definitely should make the HOF one day
djm : 3/27/2015 11:03 am : link
even though he's just a DH. The guy was the face of a franchise that won 3 WS titles. Nothing else needs to be said. I wouldn't say first ballot but he should get into Cooperstown one day.
If Edgar doesn't make it...
Dunedin81 : 3/27/2015 11:05 am : link
Papi shouldn't. Best pure hitter I've ever seen and no positive tests.

rut17 : 3/27/2015 11:46 am : link
The writers have been holding back HOF votes for guys like Piazza and Bagwell, who have never once failed a test, but Big Sloppy will probably coast in on the first ballot.
I don't think Yankee fans are obsessed with Ortiz
Matt M. : 3/27/2015 2:07 pm : link
I think Yankee fans are responding to Ortiz repeated idiotic and inappropriate tirades as a result of years of chiding about A-Rod. I think a lot of Yankee fans are actually upset that something like makes them almost defending A-Rod.

I have a few thoughts on all this:

1) I don't care how many more years he plays and how many HRs he ends up with. If Piazza and Bagwell continue to be left out of the HOF than he doesn't even deserve a sniff.

2) To take it further, Bonds and Clemens should go in before any of these "questionable" players. Neither failed a test and both are all time greats; top 5 at their respective positions.

3) For as much shit as A-Rod takes, he at least admitted more than once to taking steroids, apologized, and stands in front of the mics like a man and takes the questions by trying to focus on a positive present and future. Ortiz just comes off like a real prick now.

4) Does anyone outside of New England believe Ortiz never knowingly took PEDs?

5) Why the F does the media still have a love affair with this clown? Aren't there any Boston fans who now hate this guy, the way so many Yankee fans hate A-Rod?
lmao as someone
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 3/27/2015 2:13 pm : link
who hates Shaughnessy, I've never heard the CHB nickname or the story behind it. That's awesome. He's probably my least favorite writer in the country. Someone both Yanks fans and Sox fans can hate.

Ortiz is great. I would vote him in my HOF. But I'd also vote for Piazza and Bagwell first. And I'd also vote for Bonds and Clemens before anyone else. And I'd vote for A-Rod and Manny before Ortiz as well. And let's not forget Edgar who deserves it more than Ortiz at the DH spot and never got caught with PEDs.

Ortiz got caught. All this BS excuse making out of him is such a fucking joke. He is a cheater. He is a piece of shit. The way the media treats him is an utter joke. But he's a HOFer imo. Just has to wait in line behind all the other cheaters caught with PEDs before he gets in.
Osi
Matt M. : 3/27/2015 2:35 pm : link
The onle thing about his cheating is I'm not sure he's a HOF without PEDs. Bonds and Clemens were HOF locks before they ever took PEDs, if the alleged timelines are correct. A-Rod is questionable depending on when he actually started. If he was taking since his Rangers days, as has been speculated, then he is questionable. If it was just as a Yankee, then yes.
Shaugnessy's rejoinder...

for all of us who despise him. He basically exposed himself for the cheating phony that he is. No reporter could have caused him more grief than he just caused himself. Self inflicted. Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.
Calcaterra makes a few interesting points

that's where CHB got his material on testing frequency from. Will be interested to see what Ortiz says in response, it certainly raises valid questions.

Haven't read Abraham since they went behind a paywall, I liked the old Extra Bases blog format but never felt his material was worth investment and IIRC he was a shit around here about lineups being posted back when he was on the NY beat. Hard to find good reporting in the area, Boston media in general are in rough shape.

Ortiz isn't just disliked by Yankee fans
PhiPsi125 : 3/27/2015 9:53 pm : link
I'm willing to bet he's disliked by fans of many different teams. But of course he'll be more disliked by Yankee fans (and in the metro area in general) because of their rivalry with the Red Sox. Is it really that hard to connect those dots?

are just the ignorant ramblings of a shit-stirring troll with nothing useful to offer.

The media truly is a mind-boggling mess. Their love affair with Ortiz is so wierd. With a media that essentially makes shit up in an effort to cut down players, Ortiz just doesn't pass the smell test in any way...But they love him nonetheless.

He was nothing in Minnesota. Then he gets to Boston and suddenly has all this power. Nevermind that he's best friends with a known roider in Manny, as well as the other degenerates on that team, ACTUALLY FAILS A PED TEST, and is a loudmouth ass at every turn. Yet, he's still the media's darling. It really is strange.

But players like Piazza and Bagwell have to pay some price because these writers heard from a player that heard from a ball boy that spoke to another player that thought that Piazza did roids because he hit a lot of HRs. Oh yeah, and because he had a bunch of zits on his back.

I'm willing to bet that Ortiz has a much easier time getting into the HOF than Piazza and Bagwell do. And neither of them actually failed a PED test.
IDK...
Dunedin81 : 3/27/2015 10:20 pm : link
I don't know that he gets in, and based on what Calcaterra and Shaugnessy wrote I wonder if this backfires. The fact that he is peddling some demonstrable half-truths or even lies (particularly regarding notification about his 2003 test) is going to try the patience of even some of those who have given him a pass over the last several years.
Piazza and Bagwell belong in the hall
WeatherMan : 3/27/2015 10:30 pm : link
and the fact that they aren't in already is ludicrous. The steroid issue is not one I handle well, for personal reasons it bothers me to a degree beyond that which it should, but at this point what's done is done - release the 2003 results, slap them all with asterisks if need be (and who else is on that damn list?), and get on with it. ARod too, eventually. He's scum, but there's no denying the talent and ability that got him where he is.
