WR Sleeper: DeAndre Smelter

TC : 3/27/2015 2:32 pm
Senior out of Georgia Tech. This guy is a project, and I would only be interested in him late in the draft. But he's got a whole lot going for him.

He's a project for two reasons: He's recuperating from an ACL tear, and he's a convert from baseball and has not yet played a whole lot of football. I would normally avoid a player like that like Ebola, but he's got too much to like.

He will probably never be a #1 receiver, but could develop into a dominating possession receiver. He doesn't have enough suddenness to get great separation from a stop. But he DOES have outstanding size and physicality, great hands and intelligence, and is supper competitive.

Whoever did his write up for NFL.Com seems to love him -

And he looks good in the attached video. He's #15.

Hey, if you don't like him as a WR, maybe he can play safety! ;-)

I would definitely give him a flyer in the 6th-7th round if we haven't already picked a receiver. Very good talent. I also like Tre McBrdie from William and Mary
As a no risk UDFA that is one thing

But he is so far behind at WR due to baseball and playing in an offense that does not have the WR's running pro routes that I would not waste a draft pick on him
Smelter?

Normally, I'm as wary . . . .

of "potential" picks as anyone who's been a Giants fan should be, but this guy can do stuff. Even his blocking looks pretty good. I think he could do enough useful things on specials, etc., to allow him time to develop into a more expanded role to justify a pick anywhere in round 6 or 7, unless there's a different no-brainer pick available there.

While we all like to point to great picks in the later rounds, the reality is that most players taken there are long shots anyway.

If its not an early pick just can't see the reason to waste a pick with all the WRs presently on the team. We have so many areas of need but WR is one position where the numbers work against a development type guy.
He has a cool
