NFT: The History Channel

Anakim : 3/27/2015 10:26 pm
What the hell happened to this channel? It used to be great and now? There's very little "history" involved in it. It's a bunch of shows about ice road truckers, obese pawn shop workers and aliens playing a part in history. I mean what the fuck? What the fuck happened? What happened to real history? I mean they've made fantastic movies like Hatfield and McCoys and the American Revolution, but 95% of the airtime on that channel is crap and have nothing to do with history. The Smithsonian Channel and the Military Channel are both much better and more relevant, but it would still be nice to see some history from the History Channel.

How about some documentaries? How about some reenactments? What? Did they run out of things to talk about?
They have a few shows that are quasi-historical...
Dunedin81 : 3/27/2015 10:38 pm : link
like American Pickers and Pawn Stars. And some of their fiction, like Vikings, arguably imparts some history. But things like Ax Men, Ancient Aliens and Swamp People have nothing to do with history and come across either as the Theater of the Macabre or a sort of anthropological curiosity show.

Pawn Stars is kind of cool, but I want real historical documentaries. I want to learn something.

Yeah, I love it, but it seems to be mostly limited to 20th century warfare. Seems like the bulk of the programming is geared towards WWII, 'Nam and the Persian Gulf. I did love the program they did on the Third Reich and Saddam, as well as the stuff on the Kamikaze pilots.
I watched sons of liberty

But I thought the Hatfields and McCoys with Kevin Costner was really good.

I know...that was my tacit acknowledgement of your correctly pointing out there's such little history being shown on THC, I go to Comedy Central for my history fix.

And I second The Military Channel.
History Channel has had a weird

and when they do actual history documentaries, they are often inaccurate... I never understood that... you think they would have all sorts of fact-checkers (yes, I realize that all history is subjective, but they've been way off on many details).

Reality shows are inexpensive to produce and they bring in ratings.

terz22 : 3/28/2015 1:12 am : link
The older stuff which is pretty interesting however there is never new content on it ever. History 2 actually has a few decent shows that aren't pawn stars or swamp people. But I doubt most people even know h2 exists.

Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/28/2015 1:12 am : link
It's a lot of stuff...they cover things in a way I guess I would call superficial and it's a bit misleading or not quite accurate. For example, the Gettysburg 2-hour piece done by Ridley Scott. While I'm glad they covered elements of the battle not often discussed, I remember sitting there and saying to my wife, "That's not quite completely accurate." Same thing with a lot of WWII stuff they've done recently. I thought the series "America - the Story of Us" was a nice attempt, but again the depth was missing and therefore misleading.

One of my big beefs is they tend use an overly-dramatic narrator (especially if the content is Nazi Germany) which I think is a disservice to the historical narrative.

I think they've gotten worse for some reason...

For example, Civil War Journal used to be kind of cheesy, but they had really good and well-respected historians comment throughout the episodes and the show was very accurate.

Not the history channel, but you know what has really held up over time? The old "World at War" series narrated by Olivier.
Didn't they do...
Zepp : 3/28/2015 7:14 am : link
That series where they focused on Stalin, Hitler, Patton from WWI and how that prepared them for WW2? The production was fantastic but I remember a lot of people saying the history was actually inaccurate.

But yeah whenever I'm looking for something history related I usually skip over the history channel cuz 99% of the time they're doing ancient aliens or something with aliens.

Dave in Buffalo : 3/28/2015 7:23 am : link
I remember the late 90s when the History Channel was effectively the "world war II channel". Up until then, WWII stuff was far, far less available. That was a thrill for history and military buffs. On weekends, I would keep it on all day. I think that was my first experience tv binging.

The World at War series and Ken Burns' Civil War, were both iconic. They both, in their own ways, transformed the documentary into something personal. Once you started watching you couldn't stop. WWII was so recent. The World at War took you out of that in-the-now narrative and came at it from the big picture context, which was so revealing. The Civil War did the opposite, Burns' genius dropped you right into it.
Still not as bad as The Learning Channel,
Shepherdsam : 3/28/2015 7:29 am : link
as far as I can tell, they're nothing but fat people, midgets, cooking, people flipping houses learning how to dress themselves.

If I can somehow produce a fat cooking midget with an awful wardrobe and a house that needs fixing up, I'll be the king of reality TV.

went from an excellent interesting channel to outright useless shit in a 5 year period. "Honey Boo-Boo"? Really?

As a side note, the H2 channel seemed to have more raw history. I wish we had a history channel when we were kids. They make history very interesting and a good way for folks to get a better feel for the past.
I agree with all
River Mike : 3/28/2015 8:22 am : link
the sentiments here, and more generally TV is just reduced to the least common denominator. I do watch Ancient Aliens for the comedic entertainment value. My favorite was when they observed that many of the ancient landmarks, Stonehenge, pyramids, etc., lay aligned in straight lines. They speculated that they were refueling stations for the aliens. REALLY?! They came from distant planets and star systems light years away and they needed to refuel going from Britain to Egypt?! LOL.
To answer Anakim's question
RobCrossRiver56 : 3/28/2015 9:49 am : link
The simple answer is Profits

The company that owns the History Channel also own the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. In 2007 a new CEO took over and determined that the current programming (the stuff we liked)was too expensive to produce.

The new reality programming is way less expensive to make and believe it or not viewership is up increasing profits. They do not care what you or I think of the content. Apparently there are a lot of people out there that enjoy shit they are putting out.

I'm not one of them.

The World at War continues to withstand the test of time as the most outstanding military documentary. To me nothing compares. I still remember watching it on Saturday afternoon with my father and grandfather when I was a kid on WOR channel 9 in NYC

Deej : 3/30/2015 10:19 am : link
of how cheap it is to launch reality shows is too much for network executives. People used to bemoan how cheap it was to do a show like Survivor since it had no actors or writers. But what about a show like Pawn Stars? Im sure those guys signed deals that paid squat for 2-4 seasons.

How expensive could it be to do those shows about the storage locker auctions (and yes, I said "shows")? Once you concede that the real estate of television (ie your timeslots) are worthless because there is no limit on the # of networks, I think the whole game becomes about getting viewers as cheaply as possible.
there are multiple shows about storage lockers
Greg from LI : 3/30/2015 10:22 am : link
Multiple shows about tow trucks. Multiple shows about pawn shops. Multiple shows about weirdos living in Alaska.

Apparently, everyone in America but me, because as pointed out, the ratings are good enough to keep 'em coming.

I can't figure out what people see in most of these shows, either. I did enjoy getting a glimpse into some of these things for a show or two (like Deadliest Catch) - but who sticks around for multiple seasons? After that, it just becomes work. It's like tagging along with someone on their way to work. For a day or two, fine. Beyond that? Without a paycheck, why bother?
It's a terrible channel now
Mike in Long Beach : 3/30/2015 11:41 am : link
But I never take umbrage with the network in these scenarios. They're putting on what people are watching.
