NFT: Islanders - Ducks 1pm Game Thread

pganut : 3/28/2015 8:30 am
We'll see what changes await the Isles lineup today having incurred the "wrath of Cappy". Neuvirth gets the start, and Cappy has hinted Viz may return today. Bet on line combos changing up front.

Boychuk believes the team just needs to clean up a few (nagging) mistakes:
Quote:
If we play a full 60, we can beat anybody,” Boychuk said. “We should know it by now, but we took a period off and mental mistakes cost us the game. We were in it, but one bad shift and they score a goal.”

Cappy feels that the defense has played well over the last 6-7 games and that there's no structural need to panic:
Quote:
In the last few games, we haven’t given up much,” Capuano said. “I like the way we’ve been playing defensively. We just have to find some run support for our goalies.”

But it doesn't mean that L1 (and their poor play from last game) are exempt:
Quote:
They know. You don't have to say anything to those guys; they're the leaders of this team," Capuano said. "They know they have to be better in that situation, and when we talk about puck management, we're talking about clock management as well. As coaches, you trust your leaders. They won't do the same thing again. It's exciting to be where we are this time of year and the players have held themselves accountable all year long. It's their time."

MDC's Oshawa Generals won 7-2 in their first playoff game last night and #71 was active with 3 assists.

Not much else to say except the slide needs to stop.

Let's Go Islanders!

All that we can do is just survive
All that we can do to help ourselves
Is stay alive...
The first line needs to be separated
Lithium : 3/28/2015 8:32 am : link
And Bailey needs to grow a set.
Some miscellaneous notes
pganut : 3/28/2015 9:56 am : link
MDC is up for the OHL's William Hanley Trophy as most sportsmanlike player. While posting 42 goals and 93 points in 56 games, MDC amassed only 18 penalty minutes on the season.

Some thoughts from Sports Illustrated in discussing "New teams rising to fill NHL's rising power vacuum":
Quote:
If any two teams can become the Sharks and the Red Wings of a new era, they are the Lightning and the Islanders. Both teams bear obvious resemblance to the great Detroit teams. They are strong down the middle (Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos and New York’s John Tavares), and have deep blue lines,
league-leading possession stats and a willingness to draft purely for skill.

Certainly a lot of thinking around that Cappy's comments on players trying to make too many "sexy plays" directed at KO. A bump down to L2 would make total sense, and I'd love to see a L1 of 27-91-18 today as some of us here have hoped for. Of course, it'd be a no brainer, IMO, to have Grabner back today (and considering the opponent, would make total sense)...so why do I think that Cappy does something completely counter, like bringing CMac back?
GRABNER
steviej : 3/28/2015 10:09 am : link
Grabs needs to b in there !! Speed kills
Grabner
Metnut : 3/28/2015 11:51 am : link
out again and De Haan sitting again. What is with Capuono's love affair with Strait? We are getting close to the playoffs. We should be icing our best lineup and giving them time to gel.

Oh well, let's go islanders! I am glad to see Lee/Tavares/Bailey back together again and Okposo might add some punch to the Nielsen line.
Oh boy.
pganut : 3/28/2015 11:51 am : link
Visnovsky in for de Haan. 27-91-12, 86-51-21. No additions/subtractions for the forwards, just line juggling. Translation = no Grabner. And why sit the liability that is Strait when you can bench your second pairing Dman in CDH?

While I'll never root for this outcome, in the event we're one and done in the playoffs, the offshoot is that Snow has to can Capuano. How one can justify "hunches" instead of putting your best lineup out there each night, and on top of that not putting your optimized lineup combos on the ice is beyond me.
LOL

Ha, nice. It's just frustrating sometimes. Oh well, we have enough out there to get it done. Let's have a big weekend here and get the fanbase positive again. Need to finish strong and hopefully have home ice for a 1st round series vs Pitt.

Apparently Grabner out is legit

Per Staple, battling an illness.

Lines today: 27-91-12, 86-51-21, 26-29-18, 17-53-15. D pairs: 2-55, 37-3, 14-11.

Let's get some goals!

We kill off a 5-3 last game, gain momentum, and then give up a goal shortly after. They kill a 5 on 3 and score right away. This team needs to play with some anger and urgency.
Need

Boychuk or even Jt to have a fight.
Screw it

King Henry is

So, was a symptom of Martin breaking his nose

isn't helping things when they start booing every time the team holds the pick for 3-5 seconds. We all know they need to shoot more but give it a rest.

Another frustrating game so far. I still think we tie this up in the third. Lets go Islanders!
Every team
Fish : 3/28/2015 2:35 pm : link
In the league knows what we are going to do on offense. Every team. We have no speed sniper that cuts to the net and Knocks it in.
Every player here flubs it one way or the other.

Please comment on this.
This team is 1 and done
KWhite2250 : 3/28/2015 2:37 pm : link
If they even make the fucking playoffs. I know im an awful fan and negative but this team has suffered awful losing streaks under this pitiful fucking coach every year. November is just march/april this year. I wouldnt be surprised if they lose out to finish the year.

You really have to have a laugh at this coach. Talking a bunch of bullshit in his press conference about changes coming and then he doesnt change a fucking thing really. I dont give a shit if some people think they arent readh but pulock and reinhart could play just as fucking well if not better than hickey/dehaan/strait but the isles dont have the balls. At this point I'd rather watch cmac and boulton over brock/kennedy'/bailey and of course grabner should be playing. Im sure the coach will say everything is good. Our battle level is high and we work hahd!
Fish I was just about to ask
mikeygiants : 3/28/2015 2:39 pm : link
something along those lines. This team's woes boil down to one or a combination of the following:

1. other teams having figured out our schemes
2. youth and inexperience at this level
3. fatigue and injuries
4. lack of elite talent
and
mikeygiants : 3/28/2015 2:41 pm : link
5. coaching
Agreed KW
Fish : 3/28/2015 2:42 pm : link
The whole system was fresh and new during the season. It got stale and there is nothing to do about it. Bringing a kid up would adjust somethings. Nelson should be watching from the box for a couple of games.

Martin has disappeared as pganut said.

Yes yes
Fish : 3/28/2015 2:44 pm : link
And yes on all those points.

See what I did there. Used yes yes yes in a negative.
metnut is right; we do have some stupid fans
pganut : 3/28/2015 2:45 pm : link
But I'll give some of them a pass as this success thing is new to them. This team is seeing what it takes to be a champion, but it's at their own expense since they're watching instead of doing.

Fish, not sure it's a speed guy that's necessary to get to the net. Anyone can do it, but they need to be willing to pay the price. Outside of Lee, no one else has shown the stones to do it. That's the difference between teams that succeed at the next level and those that don't. Gotta get in there regardless of any bruises or lost teeth you may suffer. It probably won't be this year, but they'll get it, like the 84 Oilers who saw the champion Islanders sitting in the locker room after winning the cup, with icepacks nursing the battle wounds necessary to win.
Quick

Analogy...

I play hoops and on occasion an ex NBA player plays with us. When he shows up the team around him plays tight and does not see ball as much.
When he is not there we have flow and solid shots.

If JT is drawing 3 players to him then someone needs to be open, a crisp pass needs to be made and put it back of net.

Not the best analogy but everyone standing around waiting for JT.

I reference the Blackhawks often but these guys pass the puck, hit open man for a Beauty of a goal usually. Us, not so much. Why?

These guys are driving me insane. Only saving grace is I want the Rangers which if they keep playing like this they may get them.
The isles have been learning
KWhite2250 : 3/28/2015 3:31 pm : link
What it takes for years. Enough of the pep talks and moral victories. They were learning what it took vs the pens in the playoffs 2yrs ago and followed that by blowing again. Wake me when this organization puts together 2 solid years. Alot of fans overrate our players. Guys like brock and frans are just ok players.

No way do they win 2morrow and they might be in 3rd and 1pt out of wildcard by monday. They will go nowhere with these clowns behind the bench. Never seen a coach keep his job after winless months in back to back years. Lines have always stayed the same for years under this coach even during tough stretches. A normal coach changes lines up and benches people, but not this asshole
Another day
pganut : 3/28/2015 3:32 pm : link
Another 1-goal loss. Frustrating, because the D is playing well. Another fluky goal (ANA's first) the difference. This team needs to stop nibbling from the outside and get to the dirty areas. It's not a question of skill, but of heart.

The good news is WAS lost, the redpants are losing also. Anyone just see the obvious Crosby kick in that was ruled no kick, because Pens are at home and the league wants him to win the scoring title?
in an attempt to not over analyze things
theold5j : 3/28/2015 5:04 pm : link
I just feel like we have run into some hot goaltending And have not gotten the bounces. it's not like they're losing 5-1, 6-2 every night. These are tightly contested games that are 1 bounce either way from being a different game.

I watch other games and pucks go in the net like crazy. The players might be tight because of not scoring but one of these games someone is going to break the ice.

It's the same players as we had all year.
That's a good point
Fish : 3/28/2015 9:15 pm : link
We are close in every game. One goal losses but someone besides Tavares needs to do it. Taylor Hall would be the guy. Send bailey, Grabner and Hickey in a trade this off season.
some questions
Dave M : 3/28/2015 9:19 pm : link
1. Why is such a young team always gassed in the 3rd?

2. Why did this team stop cycling the puck and playing the corner?

3. Why do they SETTLE for weak point shots or bad angle shots?

4. What happened to their tenacity and guts?

All good questions
Fish : 3/28/2015 9:32 pm : link
All recognizable questions. We see it but coaching staff doesn't.

For some reason capuano thought they had a playoff spot locked up and is resting players. They all lost the edge. Coach stepped off the gas so they won't burn out yet we are not good enough to play that game.
