Devin Smith breakdown

Coach Mason : 3/28/2015 11:38 am

As we slowly draw closer to the draft, it is interesting to see some of the analysis on some of the players who may be picked in the top 3 rounds.

I've found Football guys do a pretty good job breaking down statistics and how it may translate to the pro game.

Reese has been intrigued with guys before that can take a top off a defense and Smith could be an option for that. Granted Odell can do a bit of everything but another speedster who can get deep can open up even more things for this offense to do underneath.

This is very interesting.

Thank you!

While I'm always skeptical of statistical analysis as the sole tool for evaluation, this shows some things that are very significant and correspond with what I've been able to see of his play on video.

The most obvious is that labeling him only as a long ball speedster, as so many lazy analysts have done, is silly. His success on shorter and intermediate routes is also excellent. And that jibes with the passionately competitive and capable receiver I see on video. Plus, frankly, he's not going to run away from DB's in the NFL when going over the top with the same ease as he did in school.

I like him very much as a receiver, and fully believe he would justify the #40 pick if the Giants have him as one of their BPA's at that spot.
I'm all over this kid in the second round......

after we trade back to pick up La'el Collins. Then Preston Smith and then Devin Smith.

Kid reminds me of Desean Jackson, just bigger. Speed to kill. Played at OSU. What is not to like here?

Oh, he has bad skin.....
Boylhart doesn't think he has the size/speed ratio to be a #1

But loves him as a #2....
Quote:
Devin has excellent hands and a long stride for his size that makes it easy for him to catch the deep ball with the consistency that not many speed receivers have. He can run all the routes and against zone coverage, he is a weapon because of his ability to get behind the zone and still grab the deep catch that makes a defensive coordinator scream obscenities at his defense. Devin is the type of player you see on film and think you can easily defend and then during the game, he destroys your game plan because he is faster, quicker, smarter, and a much better route runner than what you thought you saw of him on film.
Did Boylehart have similar comments about OBJ by any chance?

OBJ doesn't have the size to be a 1, either, or so I thought until I saw him in action last year...
Err, I forgot the Huddle Report archives

are free and easily accessible online. He loved OBJ and called him a franchise WR - even though he rated him only 15th on his big board, so undervalued him.

Great assessment. How is OBJs blocking downfield, anyway? I can't remember good or bad. Probably doesn't matter as Giants RBs were seldomly getting to the second level.....
