“I think the people in Philadelphia should be very excited about the changes that are coming,” Carroll said at the league meetings in Arizona, via CSNPhilly.com. “Maybe they can’t see it — the vision is not clear to them. Chip knows what he’s doing. It’s going to be interesting to see.” . “His record and his history has proven that he knows what he’s doing and that he has his act together,& #148; Carroll said of Kelly. “I know he’s really excited to have the opportunity to be in the position to mold the team. I wouldn’t doubt for a second that he’s not on it. He knows what he wants and what he needs. He’s proven that.” |
That stood out to me too. But you don't expect coaches to bash each other.
College? Ask Steve Spurrier about college.

Carroll is aware of Kelly's days in college as well?

And Carroll has the unique perspective of being successful at both levels. So I wouldn't discount what Pete was saying there.
I find it somewhat amusing that BBI gives him very little credit. If he(Kelly) gets the right QB and even a mediocre defense, the Eagles could be quite good. Think of what Russell Wilson would do to that offense. I will not be surprised if Mariota is the goal and Kelly is stocking players to trade up. He brought in a viable NFL QB that could be the key piece a trade. He is pretty shrewd.
In the end it might pay dividends for them, but he's taken an unorthodox route that has been criticized by the majority, not just a few homers who don't like his employer.
And the fact that college often doesn't translate to pros?

jcn they lost Shady and picked up Murray to save big bucks. Not much lost there in reality.
Every major change in the NFL gets "mocked" until it works and then it is copied.
I'm not conceding the division to Kelly, yet, but I'm certainly not dismissing it either.

Not disagreeing..In fact, I've often made that point as well..I was just trying to interpret what PC MIGHT HAVE meant
Kelly is simialr to Spurrier in his belief that his system is a substitute for top tier talent. It may be but tonsay its proven in the NFL is premature. Also if his system is so superior then why did they take a step back when Sanchez stepped in.
Sure Kelly is a smart coach but somehow winning oneplayoff spot in a shitty NFC east div one year is some sure fire recipe of success?
Jury is out and I don't care what other coaches say.
Not sure I understand the McCoy comment..He'll be 27 in July and has less wear and tear on him than Murray, imo..Reid didn't use him in the ground game all that much, except when he played us..
Chip seems to be a very good offensive coach much like Reed before him......but I feared 2 guys...Jackson and McCoy on that team and now both are gone and no one else scares me.
Besides, last time I counted Coughlin is only coach that has won anything in NFC East.

In fairness, it EASILY should have been 2-0 save for a brainfart..PC also built this "most talented team," something that remains to be seen with Kelly in light of his "GM" moves of late
Got it.
What I do see is a guy who took a team with a LOT of talent that underachieved the year before and had two pretty good years.
I'm not sure how is career will go but as others think. I think there will be no middle ground. Either he is very successful or he is an abysmal failure in Philly and goes back to college. I am leaning towards the second and I think we could find out very quickly.
Many Giants fans don't want to hear or admit this.
Little Bill wasn't a genius for a few seasons, either.

Fair enough. Only point I was making is that it's hard to translate college success to NFL success and Spurrier is a case in point.
That's a pretty safe asumption because guys like Kelly, with his past success and enormous ego don't take mediocrity well. If he senses that it's not working out right away, he'll head back to college.
I agree.
I just hope he doesn't somehow land Bryce Petty. That will be a nightmare for Giant fans.

I pointed out he wasn't lazy like Spurrier. But thanks for also ignoring he main point that Kelly is convinced he's smarter and his system is better than anyone else's. That he also so sure of his system that he got rid of the guys who actually had success that he has had in the NFL.
I look at ryan and Kelly in similar ways, although they are completely different coaches. By their styles, they aren't poised for longevity, rex runs his mouth too much to stay on when times get tough, and Kelly wants to tinker with things too much and is a system guy - and systems usually get found out sooner or later in the NFL.
Pete Carroll is an outlier, and people have to remember that he essentially failed in the NFL until he went back to USC.
How in the hell is that a good fit in Kelly's offense?
Everything Foles did, Petty can do at a higher level.
When he moves around he can rip throws. He can slide around and throw the length and width of the field without his feet under him. In that offense it would make him extremely tough to defend.
He's very athletic too. He can tuck and run. He can extend plays.
Marriota has some long speed on him. Yet he's a perfect match for the Eagles? In every other aspect of QB play, Petty is superior. And the arm talent is on a completely different level. Marriota can't make the same throws.
The only issue is his back. If that's a problem all bets are off.
I have seen many dismiss him because he's a product of the system. Yet they aren't downgrading a lesser QB talent in Marriota. I'm finding this very strange.
I don't think the NFL sees it that way. I think there are NFL guys and teams that rank Petty very high.
If somehow he drops to round 2, the Giants should draft him.
NFL.com has him as a possible 3rd rounder. Walter Football has him as a 3rd day pick. CBS sports has him being the 4th or 5th QB drafted. Kiper has him as the 6th QB.
Falling to round 2 seems like a certainty.
I'm hoping HOU or CLE get him before he drops to PHI.
People are overplaying the system stuff. And the lack of snaps under center. Mariotta going top 5 but Petty not until round 3+? That's way off. It won't play out that way.
The off the field stuff is exception for Petty. Football is very important to him. But more than that, he can really throw. It's not just velocity. It's a tight spiral with a quick release. And he's accurate deep. He didn't pad stats with a ton of WR screen like Derek Carr in Fresno.
Carr is a good comp. Both had system questions. Similar athletes and arm strength but I see Petty as a better passer. He has the quicker release and can make stronger throws without stepping into it.
I think he will be one of the best players in the draft.
I think Petty is a better prospect.
I may very well be wrong. But I just don't see it.
