I still have no clue why they think this is a good idea. High School kids probably dont even know who the hell Chris Mullin is, he's never been a coach. Why can't they just do anything that makes sense? link - ( New Window )
He was a great NBA player. I'm sure he'll sell them on that. I don't think this is a bad hire at all. This is a dude who knows the area and university.
This will either be the luckiest hire ever or they will make me hate someone that I have loved since I can remember. Hope this works out better than every hire since Louie

but to think that high school kids from NYC would have no idea who Chris Mullin is, that's just ridiculous. They may not care who he is, but they know who he is.
He was never a prima Donna as a player, and overcame demons.
He has been a basketball lifer. He can always sell kids on the fact that he was an NBA GM, and knew how to draft talented college kids. Also, these kids may not be old enough to know Chris Mullin the player, but their handlers do. And now Under Armour has a big name to attach to their brand.
That unfortunately is a big part of recruiting college hoops. Yes it is a risky move, but the reward is enormous.
The good press the University would get if Mullin returns a conquering hero would be priceless.
But I doubt it. This is man who has succeeded in whatever he's pursued.
He's never coached. Never recruited. I'm sure there has been a few but I can't think of one guy who has never coached and was handed a major d1 college coaching job.
him play in the NBA. If you asked 100 top high school kids to pick Mullin out of a lineup i bet maybe 5% could.
Mullin should be all over the St. John records books so, if they have a trophy case I would think at least the ball players would know who he is. Beyond that, not so much.
So because they never seen him play live, they have no idea who Chris Mullin is? When you were in high school, you only knew about current players or coaches? Had no vision of the past?
I think you're selling these kids a bit short here. They aren't ignorant. And again, it may not matter to them, but kids in NYC know who Chris Mullen is.

BBS, I'm not talking about just kids in NYC. I'm talking about the top 100 kids across the country
Will join Mullin's staff. I don't care your age, but no SJU alum, like Abdelmassih, could say no to Chris Mullin. Also, he has been recruiting many of the same kids -- Diallo for example -- that Lavin was in on.
Also, Sampson's coach said Mullin a great hire. Rysheed Jordan is already leaning on staying in school.
They're not a major power. We big time coaches lining up to come here? Coaches are expensive as hell, and I'd want more to coach in NYC than a college town.
should also consider Tom Pecora, just let go at Fordham. He had 2 good gets in Severe & Pascall. His best role is as a recruiting-oriented assistant.
Mullin knows the game better than 95% of D1 coaches. He's played for great coaches. His name remains magic in NYC. He's not too old to have a long, successful third career. Beyond all of that-I like the guy. He has wrestled his demons and has them under control.
I gave John's one of my best all-time pitchers . He finished top-5 in all the major categories.. Fordham sent an assistant flunky who was 45 minutes late for his visit. Love the school. Largest Catholic institution in the country. If this happens, best of luck. Maybe they could do better. Maybe not. But I wouldn't bet against him.
Why? Hitching your wagon to Hoiberg is a better career move than hitching it to Mullin? Abdelmassih is a SJU alum. He was a student assistant and may want this badly.
but it reminds me of when Penn hired Jerome Allen. One of the greatest players in school history, but there was no way it was going to end well. I'm much closer to the penn situation than SJ, but there are tremendous risks to this ending poorly.

That right there is the problem. One way or another, no matter how long it takes, this will eventually end up in a situation where SJ has to fire Mullin. Unless of course Mullin leaves on his own first, for whatever reasons, good or bad.
It is exactly why, as a Yankee fan, I wanted no part of them hiring Don Mattingly as manager. Donnie baseball is my all time favorite player and I didn't want to see him shit canned by the Steinbrenner clan.
And he turned down the Sacramento coaching gig, and encouraged Karl to take it.
We will disagree. I am optimistic.
His coaching resume is exactly blank.
If Mullin went to any other school and had the exact same success, they would never even think about hiring him.
That's the issue. He only got the job because he went to St. John's. Nothing else. That's a terrible reason to hire a head coach. They are not making this hire for the correct reasons.
Mook, I am not getting into an argument with you Â
because we both want the program to succeed. I will just say this, Hoiberg wasn't a hot candidate with any coaching experience when he took the Iowa St. job. And had was less accomplished as a NBA executive.
The parents of the kids he recruits all know who he is. Every coach knows who he is. Recruiting is the problem, I'd expect his resume as an nba player and exec to help in that area.
But bottom line Mullin is way, way, way better than keeping Lavin. This hs kids don't know him argument is garbage. Information this day and age is readily available. Every hs recruit in the nation will know about the Mullin hire by tomorrow morning the latest. Masiello's only national exposure was his lies about ties to Kentucky. Should have went with him I guess.
they should have gone with Danny Hurley, a guy who actually has coaching experience.. They don't need to make a "headlines" hire. They tried that with Lavin and it didn't work.
Possible candidates as assistants include Kentucky assistant Barry “Slice” Rorhssen, a Brooklyn native, former Manhattan coach and close friend of Mullin, Iowa State assistant coach Matt Abdelmassih, a St. John’s alum who has had a major hand in the Cyclones’ recent success and knows Mullin well, and Arizona assistant Emanuel “Book” Richardson from The Bronx. Abdelmassih is the lead recruiter for consensus top 10 prospect Cheick Diallo, a previous Lavin target. Mullin could also look to nab a top local recruiter, such as Manhattan assistant Rasheen Davis or Iona assistant Jared Grasso.
The way this whole thing went down with Lavin, St Johns must have had Mullin wrapped up. Who knows if it's a good hire...but it brings a buzz back to the fanbase. Probably not the best way to do business. I know he signed an extension today, but I think Dan Hurley is destined for Seton Hall at some point.
said it would take a boatload on money for DH to go back to seton hall. He felt abused by PJ and thought the school never backed him up if you remember that long ago. He doesn't have fond memories of SH at all.
RE: actually i know someone who is on the inside Â

That's actually interesting. I do remember Hurley stepping away from the team for a bit PJ's last season and also just getting tormented by fans. His brother's success didn't do him any favors. But still if they come calling him with a big offer, you have to wonder if something 20 years ago would stop him. Maybe it's a chance at redemption for him. I know that same fanbase that was all over him as a player would welcome him with open arms at this point as a coach. Willard has got to be hanging on by a thread.

I think if he leaves Rhode Island it'll be for a way bigger job than Seton Hall...
Seriously, someone please explain to me how this is a good thing. High schol kids don't even know who this guy is!
that's what I think too, but we will see.

Chris Mullin has never coached. He's never recruited. He's now the guy I want? No thanks.
It also makes things impossible if they suck and you want to fire him.

Gotcha, sorry for the misread. In that I am sure you are probably spit on.
I don't agree with Mook here, but I wouldn't spit on him ...

I can understand the Mark Price hire at Charlotte. But not this one. If you wanted a ST Johns alum, why not Mark Jackson?

Chris Mullin has coached as many games as I have.

Early indications are that Chris Mullin is targeting some very strong recruiters w/ NYC ties...Will be developing in next few days.
