NFT: Jon Stewart's replacement will be

Headhunter : 3/30/2015 8:14 am
Trevor Noah. I saw him and he is a sharp 29'year old South African that delivered a killer set on his special available on Netflix. I think it's an inspired choice, the dude is sharp
I did overuse sharp

didn't I?
Has this been confirmed?
Deej : 3/30/2015 8:17 am : link
He hasnt been funny on the Daily Show so far. He preens.

him a bit on Youtube when these rumors came out. Seems smart and funny, always ballsy to pick a guy with a significant accent but seems like a solid pick.

Deej,
NYT is reporting this will be announced later today
Jon
DanMetroMan : 3/30/2015 8:22 am : link
Stewart has already confirmed this news

"“I’m thrilled for the show and for Trevor,” Mr. Stewart said in a statement. “He’s a tremendous comic and talent that we’ve loved working with.” Mr. Stewart added that he “may rejoin as a correspondent just to be a part of it!!!”"
Cant be worse than Larry Wilmour

Can he?
I didnt have a great candidate in mind
Deej : 3/30/2015 8:30 am : link
but I dont have high hopes for this guy. I dont think he is inherently likable (like Stewart, Colbert, and Wilmore).

John Stewart really did the Daily Show franchise no favors, timing his resignation to come right after the most obvious candidate locked up hosting gigs elsewhere. I thought Rob Riggle and Amy Poehler (who is already involved with CC) would have been good choices, but I dont know if either was interested. As it stands, @Midnight is already the best late night show on that network.

Poehler seemingly is a bit unrealistic. She's a single mom and I can't imagine she would have been willing to commit to the amount of work/time it takes to do a daily tv show. Riggle would have made sense. Seems like they badly wanted to go with someone "totally fresh" however. Deep down they have to really truly regret letting John Oliver leave.

will be remembered for a long, long time.

There were no rumors re Poehler. I wont speak to her personal life, but it's not like she made a killing on P&R (which got poor ratings). Stewart probably made 5x as much as she got from NBC. And obviously her time at SNL and in particular at Weekend Update make you think she could do the job well.

Noah feels like the economical choice. Good or bad, they dont have to commit much $$ to him and probably got him to sign a long term contract (that they can walk away from because of the low $$).
There are no American comedians who can read the news?
NoPeanutz : 3/30/2015 8:47 am : link
It's an American news show. John Oliver was always an interesting anomaly, bc he seemed like a foreigner (though permanent resident) holding down a U.S. news show. But to turn the whole show over to a foreign comic, who reads and sees the stories differently from his audience?
great choice
Stu11 : 3/30/2015 8:47 am : link
he's a favorite of the Mrs. and I ever since we saw his cable special on HBO or Showtime. Really funny guy, I think he has the delivery and sarcasm to pull it off.
There were previously
JerryNYG : 3/30/2015 8:50 am : link
some rumors about Tina Fey, who would have been my top choice.

I don't have an opinion one way or the other about this guy.

John Oliver's show (albeit only 30 mins a week) is definitely superior in my mind.

Amy P. was one of the highest paid TV stars. She made between $200k and $250k per episode for P&R.
If I had a preference
PaulBlakeTSU : 3/30/2015 8:54 am : link
of Daily Show correspondents to host it, that it would be Aasif Mandvi. It is going to be incredibly large shoes to fill for anyone, though.

PaulBlakeTSU : 3/30/2015 8:55 am : link
Stewart is at least getting out so that a new host has a year or so to thrive in the presidential election cycle and get those naturally inflated ratings.
Chris
Deej : 3/30/2015 8:56 am : link
That's <$5 million per year. And there were reports that Stewart made $25-30 million.
When Jon Stewart took over for Craig Kilborn
Headhunter : 3/30/2015 8:57 am : link
he was not a household name and grew into the role and grew the show. The writing staff and correspondents are what makes or breaks the show
personally not a fan of this choice
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 3/30/2015 9:00 am : link
Noah is a funny stand-up, but his style hasn't translated well to the show.

And honestly I think he's a bit overrated as a comedian. His background is interesting but his style gets tiresome since most of his jokes come from the exact same place.

I wish they chose someone else. No Oliver killed them. I think Aasif Mandvi was probably the best choice. He's been far funnier than Noah on the Daily Show and has more experience.

He should be much better than Larry Wilmore though. The Wilmore hire was dumb. Yea, let's replace a hilarious guy that was defined by his super-high energy with a completely lifeless and dry dude who isn't even that funny.
I've always wondered
Headhunter : 3/30/2015 9:12 am : link
Jon Stewart has/had authors on the show at least twice a week. I don't think he read all of their books. The author's must supply him with key points and his staff has someone assigned to read the book and do a synopsis, BUT the sense I get is that Stewart has read most of the books. He gets into the content on more than a superficial level.
so sick of
japanhead : 3/30/2015 9:13 am : link
stewart's new affirmative action comedy. the daily show's been unfunny for years in large part due to the lack of comedic ability of the correspondents after the good ones left (carrell, helms, riggle, etc.). wilmore was good on the daily show in 5 minute segments twice a month but he's not funny enough to carry his own show and the panels he puts together are absolutely painful to watch, in addition to being unfunny.

it's a shame stewart has the clout to hand-pick his replacement, as he has no comedic acumen whatsoever. so sick of seeing that dude put on a fake jewish accent and mock something. or put on a fake new york mafia accent and mock something. or stammer though an unfunny rant where he takes fox news to task. zzzzzzz.. just lazy.

I only catch Stewart's clips on Youtube but there isn't a clip that I've seen where I didn't at least chuckle.
When I heard the rumors I admit I was concerned
sjnyfan : 3/30/2015 10:46 am : link
I've seen his stand up (It's called "African American" and I believe it's on Showtime) and of course his segments on the Daily Show. There have been a few laughs but I think the tone he sets is a bit too serious, especially for CC. It'll be interesting to see how it translates once he takes the reigns. I've since learned that he had a very similar show in South Africa for a couple of years. I'm going to try to find a few clips. Hopefully that's a bit lighter.

I couldn't disagree more with this post. Jon Stewart has been anything but lazy and the show is still funny because there is still just as much of an opportunity to skewer the media outlets and our government for the shameful jobs they are doing.

I also think this rant is the pot calling the kettle black; replace "Daily Show" with "Saturday Night Live" and "correspondents" with "castmembers," and you have the same lazy argument people make about it not being funny anymore.

The Daily Show is still funny, despite Stewart heading ~2,000 episodes of the program. Even just last week, TDS had a great piece comparing media reaction to Ferguson and Bengazi that was just as sharp as anything they did years ago.
that was a great segment Paul
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 3/30/2015 11:08 am : link
I don't watch every day, but I try to watch a couple times a week.

It seems like Stewart is dropping the gloves and just going right after FoxNews during his final stretch at the Daily Show. He's always gone after them but seems to be going extra hard at them recently.
i'm not saying
japanhead : 3/30/2015 11:28 am : link
stewart doesn't make some decent points here and there, or that he isn't "sharp." just that he isn't funny. he's never really been funny, this going back to his MTV days, any film role he's ever had, his standup, and so forth.

different stroke for different folks i suppose, but i've watched the show since the beginning and he was eclipsed by colbert long ago. i don't know if the writers are to blame, but the quality of the correspondents has tanked in recent years, and his propensity to go on stammering rants is far higher than it used to be back when the show was better (2004-2010).

he does a fine job calling out fox news, sure. he also displays an irritating proclivity to get angry and preachy. perhaps it was just seeing colbert do a much better job satirizing essentially the same stories, but i couldn't have been happier to hear stewart was leaving, until i learned that his replacement is a little known correspondent who has never been funny on any daily show episode i've seen him on.

of course this is just my opinion, but if i think of shows on comedy central that are actually funny, i'll go with key and peele, broad city, workaholics. colbert used to be the best on that network. but, at stewart's behest, the network replaced him with larry wilmore, who's never been very funny, and, like stewart displays a tendency to take himself far too seriously and go on social issues rants where the comedy takes a back seat as he exposes some hypocrisy or another, in self-important fashion.

just my two cents, but stewart is hardly a comedian, and, in my opinion, has benefitted from good writing and very talented correspondents (none of whom are still on the show). he's been flailing for the better part of 5 years now. again, in my opinion.

maybe this new guy will be great. he hasn't been so far. again, my opinion.
as far as SNL is concerned,
japanhead : 3/30/2015 11:40 am : link
i wouldn't know, but i do believe that that show never managed to reproduce the funny it captured during the farley-sandler-myers-hartman era. ferrell and sanz being some recent exceptions. i actually liked the old kevin nealon and norm macdonald weekend update segments but fey/fallon duo never caught on with me and i haven't watched SNL in probably 6 years so i haven't a clue if whoever's doing it now is any good.

maybe i'm old and cranky, or maybe i just got spoiled by colbert bringing it with such consistency. but i've watched stewart become an increasingly ranty and undisciplined host (that approach can often work in stand-up, notsomuch for a 22 minute news satire show), as his clout increased. add this to his conscious effort to hire diversity (regardless of their comedic skillset) and you've got a show that's a lot less funny than it used to be. IMO

But it sure seems like all the top talent is leaving the show before Jon calls it quits.
what

top talent is still on that show? the funniest ones left many years ago
Samantha Bee & Jason Jones
Headhunter : 3/30/2015 11:59 am : link
.
don't
japanhead : 3/30/2015 12:19 pm : link
think either are all that, though they're ok. jones is decent, but is really just a poor man's rob riggle, sam bee is just profoundly unfunny most of the time. it may have something to do with the segments being written for them, i guess, but if those are the best of who is left it further confirms how far the show has fallen from its glory days.
I love when people come on threads

To crap on something they don't watch. Why on earth do you think we need you to tell us how you personally don't like something when everyone else who opens this thread likely enjoys it or they wouldn't be posting. Do you value yourself so much that you feel we need to be subjected to your whims and prejudices? Do you walk down the aisle of a food store and tell patrons that spaghetti has jumped the shark? I mean honestly.

it's a discussion forum for christs sake. my apologies for presenting a counterpoint. also, if you bothered to read my posts you'd see it's pretty apparent that i watch the show, though i often tap out if the rambling rant to sharp biting comedy ratio is skewed toward the former (and it too often is)
