Peter King MMQB- This is a 9 "Prime Player Draft"

Headhunter : 3/30/2015 11:41 am
You want to pick in the top nine. Here’s what a few football people who were at the league meetings are thinking about the breakdown of this draft: Nine prime picks, then eight or 10 really good prospects, then maybe 30 or so of the same-level player. The top nine: quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, defensive tackle Leonard Williams, wideouts Kevin White and Amari Cooper, pass-rushers Dante Fowler and Vic Beasley, offensive tackle Brandon Scherff and cornerback Trae Waynes. After that, beauty starts to be in the eye of the beholder. I had one GM tell me: “The 17th pick on our board might be the 53rd pick on another team’s board—and that could be a team we really respect.”

Well the Giants are the kings of having pick N+1 in an N player draft. Thinking of the Ike and C. Jones drafts in particular.
Seems like even if they take the CB
Headhunter : 3/30/2015 12:03 pm : link
they win this year
Note Scherff the only OL
JonC : 3/30/2015 12:10 pm : link
consistently among draftniks and those a bit more plugged in.
I am team Scherff

Hmm

I wonder what these "football people" thought of OBJ as a prime pick last year?

Me too. Though Waynes wouldn't make me too upset either.
To me this is just the typical hype
English Alaister : 3/30/2015 1:30 pm : link
Of course some of those other players in the 10-20 range are gonna be great. People complain about having the N+1 pick in 1996, we just drafted badly.

Terry Glenn, Marvin Harrison, Eddie George and Ray Lewis went later on in the first. We just fluffed the evaluation.

I think there is an excellent chance the best player in this draft goes in the 10-20 range. I can see Devante Parker being a stud. I can see LBs like McKinney or Anthony being beasts. DTs like Shelton, Davis, Goldman, Brown are all seriously good. Gregory could be it.

This is just the usual draft hype.
Exactly why a lot of us
bceagle05 : 3/30/2015 1:39 pm : link
hate when they win meaningless games down the stretch.
EA
ColHowPepper : 3/30/2015 2:01 pm : link
agree; I looked at the Cedric Jones draft a few weeks ago, smh; fiasco, and can't even blame Reese (:

They do have to hit their first two picks, at least, this draft to have some hope of incremental improvement for 2015, and this would seem to be a good draft in which to do that at 9 and 40.
I see it as an 8 player draft, as I don't incliude Waynes.
yatqb : 3/30/2015 2:05 pm : link
I'm concerned that Scherff won't be there for us, and that we'll wind up taking Parker, Peat or a DL like Dupree.
My top 9 for NYG
Pep22 : 3/30/2015 2:17 pm : link
1. DT Williams
2. DE Fowler
3. DE Beasley
4. WR Cooper
5. OT Collins
6. DT Shelton
7. DE Ray
8. OT Sherff
9. WR White

and of course, at least 1 and probably 2 QBs go before 9.

That was the first thought that entered my mind
Funny
NNJ Tom : 3/30/2015 2:57 pm : link
but that was what I was thinking too.

This is a trade down draft.
Shelton should be in there instead of Waynes

the article states

9 player draft and the Giants pick 9th.

So why are people complaining that NY won some games down the stretch? 9 = 9 correct?

Not that it even matters...Giants are in good position to draft a good player whether they fuck it up or not won't be traced back to the 2014 win at St Louis...relax.
Scherff or Collins
PatersonPlank : 3/30/2015 3:00 pm : link
Count me on them Scherff too
I'm not complaining about the wins,
bceagle05 : 3/30/2015 3:05 pm : link
just pointing out that a draft slot or two might be the difference between a top prospect and a good-but-not-great prospect. Anyway, my hope all along was an impact defensive player in round one and a starting guard in round two. Hope that's how it shakes out.

And it was considered a 9 player draft at the time? We didn't even know who or who would not come out.
Nfl Draft Scout had the same top 8 prime players
jeff57 : 3/30/2015 3:11 pm : link
in its updated list. With Shelton at 9. And La'el Collins at 10.

This jibes with the Seattle GM who said they had only 16 prospects with a first round grade after trading his first round pick for Jimmy Graham.

Or it could be that there are 45 guys w a first round grade. Looking back over the years of Giants high level picks firsts we have the Ron Dayne's and Cedrick Jones' and even Hilliard who depute his injury was never going to be an All Pro. So Lets hope whoever it is is more OBJ and LT and Banks than it is the former.
Marriota shouldn't be on the list
KWALL2 : 3/30/2015 4:18 pm : link
I sure hope he goes top 8 but I think he'll drop much lower than expected. Bryce Petty should be drafted before him
OBJ was a blind squirrel pick
Ivan15 : 3/30/2015 4:45 pm : link
Face it. Unless the Giants relied on inside info from Eli Manning, there is no way they would have picked him in that slot based on scouting evaluation alone.

At the time, he was a safe pick - "clean", not a hot dog, not a troublemaker.

I am reveling in it right now just like the rest of you. As brilliant as it appears right now, let's see how that pick looks in the spring of 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Totally agree. I don't even like Winston as a first round based on his Sr season and his off the field antics.
Can somebody translate Ivan's post?

No chance.

But as for the draft, I can't see any of the teams ahead of us picking Waynes, and I doubt that we want him, so for us it's an 8 player draft unless someone takes Shelton ahead of us.
I like Winston a lot
djm : 3/30/2015 5:10 pm : link
I think he's gonna be a legit starting QB in the NFL. He handles himself pretty well on the field and in the locker room which is more telling than some of the stupid shit he did that got him in some hot water. He's a kid...he's likely to mature enough that he doesn't wind up in prison.

Quite a ringing vote of support! Made me laugh. Such a high standard!

I'll give it a shot. Let's see now...

Translation: The Giants are too stupid to know a good receiver when they see one, and they just got lucky when they drafted OBJ at #13.

Quote:

Translation: The Giants thought OBJ was a solid citizen. They had no idea that in reality he was a Class A screw-up.

Translation: OBJ will never see a second contract with the Giants, and he'll be lucky if he's not kicked off the team in the next year or two.
The Giants made a great decision on OBJ and than they got lucky
wgenesis123 : 3/30/2015 6:12 pm : link
too! They passedf on Donald and Martin, so some how they had OBJ rated higher, but I have a hard time believeing anyone knew how good OBJ would prove to be his rookie year.
Not exactly a blind squirrel!

wut?
JonC : 3/30/2015 6:18 pm : link
Not only did the Mannings know who OB was since he was in high school, NYG also knew all about him. Where do you some of you clowns get your info, for fuck's sake.
