Draft pick trivia from Gil Brandt

sphinx : 3/30/2015 5:29 pm
Gil Brandt
Most 1st-round picks in 1 year: 4 by #Jets in 2000.

No. 12: Shaun Ellis
No. 13: John Abraham
No. 18: Chad Pennington
No. 27: @Anthony_Becht

#Redskins once went 11 years w/out a 1st-round pick (1969-79), 8 of those w/out a pick higher than 4th round. Longest wait? Round 8, 1972.

That was an excellent haul by Parcells

In the 80s too. Off the top of my head they traded at least one maybe two for Wilber Marshall. There are others just can't remember...
They probably traded a first

In the spring of 1988, Marshall became the first NFL free agent in eleven years to sign with another team, agreeing to a 5-year, $6 million contract offer to play for the Washington Redskins, the team that had eliminated the Bears from the NFL playoffs in each of the previous two seasons.[10] When the Bears declined to match the offer, the Redskins had to give them their two first-round draft picks in the next two NFL Drafts as compensation.

The Baltimore Sun | August 21, 1992 ...
The Washington Redskins closed the book on one of their worst trades Thursday when they waived veteran running back Gerald Riggs. The Redskins gave the Atlanta Falcons a first- and second-round draft pick in 1988 to get Riggs, hoping that he'd be another John Riggins in their one-back offense. It turned out that Riggs, who was 28 at the time, had been worn down from 1984 through 1986 when he carried the ball 1,043 times. He was plagued with injuries with the Redskins and when he was left unprotected on Plan B this spring, no team gave him an offer.

Wiki ...
Byner was traded to the Washington Redskins before the start of the 1989 season for running back Mike Oliphant.

was a below average player,,,,Pennington had flashes....the other two were great picks.
Pennington would've

still been the QB for the Jets with multiple playoff appearances if it weren't for the injuries.

One of the smartest QBs to ever play the game

One of the worst arms, even before the rotator cuff surgeries.
George Allen hated rookies

Would trade as many draft picks as possible to acquire veterans.
