The Washington Redskins closed the book on one of their worst trades Thursday when they waived veteran running back Gerald Riggs. The Redskins gave the Atlanta Falcons a first- and second-round draft pick in 1988 to get Riggs, hoping that he'd be another John Riggins in their one-back offense. It turned out that Riggs, who was 28 at the time, had been worn down from 1984 through 1986 when he carried the ball 1,043 times. He was plagued with injuries with the Redskins and when he was left unprotected on Plan B this spring, no team gave him an offer.
