I find that hard to believe. They ended the season with 47 on defense. I don't know if it means anything other than maybe they feel with a new coordinator they can expect more consistently good pass rush. And that unless they love a defensive end they could be looking at other positions.
I don't have any earth-shattering analysis of in this post, it just surprised me when I saw that looking through some stats and was wondering if everyone else is as surprised by this as I am.
they allowed the 4th most yards per game and 5th most yards per play.
Ka-ping!!! Beer, here!!
Sorta like JJ Watt but we're not suppose to bring that up because "you play who is on your schedule"[/trollface]
Well, at least when I become the DC that's what I'll preach.
And yeah, no one ever retorts the JJ watt stat
This x 10
We played well against bad teams and played bad against good teams. Analysis: we were not contenders and were never just one player away from being one.
More analysis: If we continue to have the type and number of injuries that we had last year and the year before, we will not be a very good team this year either.
The year before, this defense, was thought to be a top 10 defense.....statistically only......playing against quarterbackless teams certainly helped...
When this team needed a sack or a pressure or a hurry, could it do it? There is no doubt in my mind, that that second game against Dallas, was a huge factor, in going in a different direction for this Giant defense, away from Perry Fewell. Of course, giving up 400 points for the second time under his command, certainly was huge, even if there were injuries on defense.....But to allow Romo that kind of time on a final drive, is something we have seen too many times before, from a Fewell defense....
But also consider that the Giants : the Giants allowed the second least third down conversions per game & had the fourth best third down against % in the league. Perry Fewell got fired on what happened on first & second downs. Ah Dallas... Let's compare the game at Giants & the playoff game at GB:
Giants : Romo 18-26 / 275 / 4-0. Murray 24-121. 18 FDs 53 plays 394 yards 275 passing 119 rushing. Pretty bad huh? Read N React Tampa 2. Blah blah fucking blah...0k Packers
Romo 15-19 191 10.1 yards per attempt 2-0. Murray 25-123. 21 First Downs 51 plays 336 yards. Great aggressive game plan by Capers, correct.
Also consider Rolle's drop of a gimme. Interception in the Giants end zone that takes away a Cowboy TD & Dez Bryant's catch that was rules a non-catch. See where I'm going with this?

Do they need more consistent pressure - yes - as do 31 other NFL teams
The problem is the last drive against Dallas in the second game skews a lot
They have players that can get to the QB
There's some good pieces on this defense - most of the positive statistics that the defense yielded last season are not illusionary. Even if Fewell wasn't let go I would've expected a significant step forward for the D this year based on how they finished and the young developing talent that they have.
With speed and athleticism on the opposite side, JPP, became much more effective.

Im willing to bet most of any teams total sacks come against bad teams. Not sure why people keep alluding to this to somehow downplay the Giants; once again go check Watt's stats. They match up perfectly with your argument about how the Giants collected their sacks.
This isn't a knock on Watt; its continually brought up to show that the entire league feasts off of bottom feeders, we are no different.

in the last 5 games of the season. It was against bad teams, or teams already eliminated from the playoffs, but I think anyone watching the last 7 games closely saw a defense that was playing much better as a whole despite who their opponents were.

Read the entire post. The point made was anything but downplaying the Giants. But you can't completely dismiss the fact that the D's best performance came in non-meaningful games.
