G-men Had 4th most sacks in the league last year

Jesse B : 4/6/2015 11:17 pm
I find that hard to believe. They ended the season with 47 on defense. I don't know if it means anything other than maybe they feel with a new coordinator they can expect more consistently good pass rush. And that unless they love a defensive end they could be looking at other positions.

I don't have any earth-shattering analysis of in this post, it just surprised me when I saw that looking through some stats and was wondering if everyone else is as surprised by this as I am.
I wonder how many defensive snaps we saw last year
jcn56 : 4/6/2015 11:19 pm : link
compared to the rest of the league. My guess, we had a higher number of sacks to go with a high number of snaps, because we just let people drive forever out there.
They racked up a ton
Matt in SGS : 4/6/2015 11:25 pm : link
of garbage time sacks late in the year against rookie QBs and bad offensive lines. When they needed it most, the pass rush was no where against Dallas in the 2nd game. Romo still might be standing back there right now.
Giants had 1007
pjcas18 : 4/6/2015 11:27 pm : link
snaps on D, 11th fewest in the league.

they allowed the 4th most yards per game and 5th most yards per play.

Sorta like JJ Watt but we're not suppose to bring that up because "you play who is on your schedule"[/trollface]

Its like hitting a homerun in the 9th, with no one on base, and
wgenesis123 : 4/7/2015 5:22 am : link
down by 10 runs. It looks good in the stats, the fans enjoy it, but its meaningless. Consistent pressure on 2nd and long and 3rd down is more important than sacks. What good is a sack on 2nd down if the QB has all day to throw on 3rd down?
Sacks are overrated IMO
mrvax : 4/7/2015 6:41 am : link
QB pressures/hurries/hits are where a defense needs to be at. The goal is to make life miserable to a QB on as many plays as possible.

Well, at least when I become the DC that's what I'll preach.
IIRC, sacks were way down
idol-mind : 4/7/2015 7:03 am : link
until the Jacksonville game. Usually I'm not a big proponent of downplaying performances against weaker teams, but the pass rush didn't exist when the team needed it to and only really started rearing its head after the season was already over.
Another example of how stats can be very misleading

..
Every positive offensive or defensive
Headhunter : 4/7/2015 7:28 am : link
statistic was due to Tenn Jack & Wash. Where we completed 1,000,000 garbage time points and had 1,000,000 sacks and 2,000,000 points and allowed 0000000 sacks and pressures . This place sucks moose balls
What matters is when you get them (i.e. key moments in a game)
rebel yell : 4/7/2015 7:56 am : link
not how many you have. It's a misleading statistic if you look at it that way.

that's about the size of it. Lord knows every other team collected sacks only against good teams.
Skew it however you want
UConn4523 : 4/7/2015 8:00 am : link
we have players that can make plays, it's proven. Hopefully we now have a guy who can utilize these players more efficiently.

And yeah, no one ever retorts the JJ watt stat
I agree we got more against bad teams
Jesse B : 4/7/2015 8:02 am : link
but I'd assume that's true for most tram. 28th other teams didn't beat on them
Ayers and Damonster
Kevin(formerly Tiki4Six) : 4/7/2015 8:08 am : link
Were also on the sideline for that last Dallas drive, it Prob what really got Fool fired.
JPP got garbage sacks
Headhunter : 4/7/2015 8:11 am : link
against that Garbage All Pro Trent Williams since he plays for a garbage team

Marty in Albany : 4/7/2015 8:22 am : link
but it is not earth-shattering.

We played well against bad teams and played bad against good teams. Analysis: we were not contenders and were never just one player away from being one.

More analysis: If we continue to have the type and number of injuries that we had last year and the year before, we will not be a very good team this year either.
Who was your sack leader?
Doomster : 4/7/2015 8:25 am : link
Against whom did he get most of his sacks? And when?

The year before, this defense, was thought to be a top 10 defense.....statistically only......playing against quarterbackless teams certainly helped...

When this team needed a sack or a pressure or a hurry, could it do it? There is no doubt in my mind, that that second game against Dallas, was a huge factor, in going in a different direction for this Giant defense, away from Perry Fewell. Of course, giving up 400 points for the second time under his command, certainly was huge, even if there were injuries on defense.....But to allow Romo that kind of time on a final drive, is something we have seen too many times before, from a Fewell defense....
fewell was fired despite that, and coughlin mentioned it immediately
mattlawson : 4/7/2015 8:53 am : link
obviously the defense was not where it needed to be. sacks arent everything
Fewell was screwed before the season started
RetroJint : 4/7/2015 9:20 am : link
1. The Will Hill waiving 2 Beason's injury during OTAs.
But also consider that the Giants : the Giants allowed the second least third down conversions per game & had the fourth best third down against % in the league. Perry Fewell got fired on what happened on first & second downs. Ah Dallas... Let's compare the game at Giants & the playoff game at GB:

Giants : Romo 18-26 / 275 / 4-0. Murray 24-121. 18 FDs 53 plays 394 yards 275 passing 119 rushing. Pretty bad huh? Read N React Tampa 2. Blah blah fucking blah...0k Packers

Romo 15-19 191 10.1 yards per attempt 2-0. Murray 25-123. 21 First Downs 51 plays 336 yards. Great aggressive game plan by Capers, correct.
Also consider Rolle's drop of a gimme. Interception in the Giants end zone that takes away a Cowboy TD & Dez Bryant's catch that was rules a non-catch. See where I'm going with this?

Sacks
stretch234 : 4/7/2015 9:30 am : link
Only the Giants play bad teams and bad LT. Greg Hardy gets 7 of his 15 sacks against guys playing their 3rd or 4th career game in 'garbage time' and he is dominant. Giants do it and they are shit

Do they need more consistent pressure - yes - as do 31 other NFL teams

The problem is the last drive against Dallas in the second game skews a lot

They have players that can get to the QB
sack
Les in TO : 4/7/2015 9:54 am : link
numbers were also inflated due to inability to get off the field so more snaps/opportunities for sacks. would be curious to know what the sacks/snaps ratio was and where they ranked.
28 of the 47 sacks came
eclipz928 : 4/7/2015 9:56 am : link
in the last 5 games of the season. It was against bad teams, or teams already eliminated from the playoffs, but I think anyone watching the last 7 games closely saw a defense that was playing much better as a whole despite who their opponents were.

There's some good pieces on this defense - most of the positive statistics that the defense yielded last season are not illusionary. Even if Fewell wasn't let go I would've expected a significant step forward for the D this year based on how they finished and the young developing talent that they have.

Those sacks also coincided with two young players getting Mathias K's position.

With speed and athleticism on the opposite side, JPP, became much more effective.
Well, how else were they supposed to set up those amazing 3rd & 18

Im willing to bet most of any teams total sacks come against bad teams. Not sure why people keep alluding to this to somehow downplay the Giants; once again go check Watt's stats. They match up perfectly with your argument about how the Giants collected their sacks.

This isn't a knock on Watt; its continually brought up to show that the entire league feasts off of bottom feeders, we are no different.

Read the entire post. The point made was anything but downplaying the Giants. But you can't completely dismiss the fact that the D's best performance came in non-meaningful games.
