In 5 years who in the top 10 will have this said about them? There are players who aren't necessarily "BUSTS" but their careers just aren't what was expected.....a guy like Keith Rivers comes to mind...
Jameis Winston QB
Leonard Williams DE
Amari Cooper WR
Kevin White WR
Marcus Mariota QB
Randy Gregory OLB
Arik Armstead DE
Brandon Scherff T
Danny Shelton DT
Andrus Peat OT
DeVante Parker WR
Dante Fowler Jr.
I dont agree with this at all. Kevin White was already considered the #2 or #3 WR prospect even before running his 40. It was expected that if he ran anything under 4.5 that it would solidify him as the #2 prospect at WR. The 4.35 wasnt expected but under 4.5 was.
Now that being said he already had production. He already had size. He already wins a lot of 50/50's. Runs routes well. Not as good as Cooper but better than Parker. The only real question on him was his speed. And he answered that..
So I dont see him as being OVERRATED. I see him as the #2 receiver in the draft.. Some people would value him over Cooper because of his size.. and potentially higher ceiling..
Lets not make it like he is just some workout wonder. He has production to go along with his athleticism.
A lot of these pass rushers are just edge rushers in a 3-4 so they have to be in the right system to succeed. Fowler and Dupree are more of your prototypes for a 4-3 DE. I like Fowler because he is more of a complete DE. Dupree is not a traditional hand in the dirt DE. Are we really going to gamble on a guy that hasn't really played the position we are going to expect him to play in the NFL? That is a huge gamble. We have no idea if he can control 330 pound OTs to set an edge. I don't care how great you are as a pass rusher, if you can't set an edge in a 4-3 then you will lose a ton of games. Look at last year. I would like another DT but DT wasn't really our problem last year. Last year we got burned on the edges due to a combination of poor talent and poor scheme.
DTs are always hard to project because of the huge jump in talent from college to the NFL.
The OL don't blow you away. Scherff worries me because you always hear about his nastiness and his technique. If he has both then why does he get beat as often as he does? That is concerning. Peat has all the tools and supposed work ethic but then why is he so out of shape, out of breath at the combine and why did his last year in college reall go downhill?
To me, I'm taking White and Cooper if they are on the board before everybody else.
If Chan Gailey installs something resembling an NFL offense, there is little to no chance that a raw Mariota beats out either Geno or Fitzpatrick.
Most of the writers and fans screaming for his selection have failed to analyse whether his selection actually improves the team. It may - but it will be 2017 or later before you see it.
Well then, there you go..:)
I prefer the Eli approach
I don't think that's been questioned by anyone in spite of every negative story that's been put out there.
I agree with you. He might be a knucklehead off the field, but the football part, I don't think, would be the reason why he might wash out.
You cannot dismiss the serious off field stuff or downplay it, but the football part of his evaluation is as good as any pocket-passer prospect in a long time.
