Hard to say he was underrated. Hammer is a good choice. I'd say Banks, though. Giants fans don't underrate him, but I don't think he ever got his due on a league-wide basis when he played.
A model of consistency....How consistent has Eli been so far?
Eli's number #1 most important attribute he is consistent...making 167 consecutive starts...that's 11 years without missing a start...3rd most in NFL history behind:
1) Brett Favre (297)
2) Payton. (208)
That number alone almost gives the man hall of fame credentials....but consider his stats so far:
39,755 passing yards (15)
297 TD passes. (13)
Eli needs 17 more TD passes and to throw for 4,856 yards to move into 10th place all time in both categories!!
The man has had a tremendous career and been an iron man rock...how likely will the Giants ever have another QB this consistent and this good ever again??
but I believe he's rated appropriately by most fans. anytime under or over rated are discussed it's hard because none of us truly know how a player is rated or viewed.
Eli is polarizing (because he is NOT consistent - at least statistically), but he's a multiple time pro-bowler (3) and two time SB MVP. He'll probably be elected to the HOF. How is that underrated?
And why does everyone assume Eli will be replaced by a bowl of jello? Why won't he be replaced by the next Aaron Rodgers instead of the next Danny Kanell?
He played a position short on glamor in that defense, and did a lot of dirty work that didn't pile up flashy stats, but he was the best around at what he did. He shed TEs like a dog sheds fur.
the interception of Elway was in the regular season
which was also the era of the linebacker. It's hard to consider him underrated. For me it's easy: Mark Collins. I never forgave GY for permitting Mark to have any entire second career as a safety with KC & Seattle.
Another guy I'd suggest - Erik Howard. He struggled with injuries for much of his career, but when he was healthy he was an absolute moose in the middle of the line.
If by the league, then it would most definitely have to be Eli Manning. Never saw a two time Super Bowl MVP and multiple Pro Bowl attendee with 30+ TDs and 4000+ yards per season QB get so little respect.
Everyone points to his interceptions, but while he has had multiple 20+ interception seasons, many of those were due to the system and the associated miscommunication on the part of the WRs.
By Giants fans? I would say in modern time, it's definitely Prince.
might be one of the most undervalued player in the entire league.
Even among Giants fans he is under appreciated. It is the most bizarre thing I have ever seen. I know Giants "fans" that told me during this past season that Eli was "washed up" and needed to retire and blamed the bad season on him. Meanwhile he was having a great season. Crazy.
Little Bill's Super Bowl XXV defensive scheme might be in the Hall of Fame, but it was Earhardt's boys who ate up 40 minutes of clock, and "shortened the game" for Big Bill.
1) everyone gives his wrs credit over him. All of their best seasons came with eli manning. What has boss, ballard, nicks, smith, manningham, plax done since eli. toomer couldn't even make the chiefs in 2009 and was a starter on the giants the year before. Cruz went undrafted. Plaxs best years were with a young eli.
First, everyone said eli just throws it up to plax.
Then because nicks is a first round pick
then cruz did everything. Now beckham is amazing. Dont get me wrong, all play/played great. but watch payton, rogers, brady highlights. they make good throws but they also have wrs making circus catches too. but the qb get all the credit.
2)top 15 all time in every qb category and has a good chance to be top 10 by the end of next year.
When eli retires, all his haters will come to realize how good he really is. those giants fans who don't like him, will be thankful for youtube so they can watch eli highlights remembering what it was like having a qb.

Burress best season came in 2002 with the Steelers
I like Eli as mentioned, I just don't think he's really underrated (by most fans)
No doubt about it, among Giants fans and non-Giants fans alike, Eli is the most underrated superstar athlete in any sport that I can remember over 40 years. The guy is a two time Super Bowl MVP and Super Bowl Champion. He plays in the largest media market in the country. He's an iron man. He's a model citizen. He's absolutely every single thing you could ask for in a franchise quarterback. And yet, he's always playing second fiddle to someone.
Close second, I like Rodney Hampton. Great back, great Giant and a champion. I always hear people say they think Tiki was the best Giants back of the past four decades. For my money, I like Hampton. He was a bruiser and speed guy that could carry the load for the entire offense. Good guy too.
Hampton is *not* a close second to Eli. He's miles apart which is kind of my whole point about Eli being both incredible and incredibly under appreciated.
underrated by non Giant fans/ Rest of NFL: ELi Manning, no question
Underrated on the current roster : Trumaine McBride and Robert Ayers
underrated in the recent past: Chase Blackburn, James Butler, Aaron Ross, Derrick Ward, Sam Madison, Michael Mathews, Sam Garnes, Rich Suebert, David Diehl, Madison Hedgecock, Kevin Dockery, Mathias Kiwanuka (full career, dont just focus on 2014)
Same with Amani Toomer. Toomer should have made 2 pro bowls.
Yep, and finding a non-giant fan who has anything positive to say about our 2x SB MVP is about as rare as a unicorn.
Great player
Yeah, Pepper and Reasons understandably got overlooked.

Did I miss that one?
I thought everyone knows how awesome Banks was.
I guess people probably feel like he benefited from LT, and I'd guess a lot of that defense did, but Banks was a great player for a lot of years.

Yeah I though of him, but he wasn't underrated, he was the one of the very few positives in those years of gloom
This is who first crossed my mind.
In my time as a fan: Keith Hamilton
Close second, I like Rodney Hampton. Great back, great Giant and a champion. I always hear people say they think Tiki was the best Giants back of the past four decades. For my money, I like Hampton. He was a bruiser and speed guy that could carry the load for the entire offense. Good guy too.
probably true, he's the most common name on here.
