What do YOU suggest we do at safety?

OBJesus : 4/9/2015 6:15 pm
You'd have to be a psycho to trot out 2 guys with a combined 0 career starts especially when they're not even high potential guys, so what do you do? Anyone left in UFA is pretty much a career back up that everyone here will be trashing by week 2 if we threw him into a full time starters role, that Gipson guy from the browns is really good but he's an RFA with a 2nd round tender I think so he might be tough to get, I was really hoping we'd go all in this off-season in attempts to make one final push in the home stretch of the Eli/Coughlin era but we seem like a team playing it tentatively and already prepping for the future as opposed to putting the best roster we can put on the field this year, Eli could have been a dynasty QB if we didn't waste half his career putting together mediocre rosters and relying on him to piggy back it, sad...

for all you guys who thought mays was the second coming and wanted to draft him early.

hahaha fucking ha

my project rant sleeper lowery is still in the league at age 29 and out earning mays, at 27

I'll have some crow on that, I thought Mays was gonna be a beast, still one of the best safties in madden though lmao
i embarrassed myself that year obsessing about lowery as a 4th round

cb to safety conversion. its nice to see the league catching up to me ;-O
I think S is a huge need, a hugely important position & they'll be ok
Eric on Li : 4/10/2015 1:10 pm : link
Start with the current roster which has Behre, Taylor, B. Jackson, and a couple other fodder guys. Not good, but definitely possible to see 1 contributor emerging from that group. Obviously need to add talent since there's a good chance they will see at least 3 safeties get heavy game action. I see that coming in the form of 1 veteran, 1 early-to-mid round draft pick, and possibly 1 later pick UDFA.

free agents that would could fill a role - Dawan Landry, Jeremy Miles, Danieal Manning, Bernard Pollard, Thomas Decoud, Stevie Brown

Obviously lots of interesting names in the draft. I'd like to see them get 1 guy who can play in the box and 1 guy with plus athleticism/ball skills.
I'm starting to question Reese's thinking on a safety
Jersey55 : 4/10/2015 4:23 pm : link
because I can't believe that he has painted himself into a corner again and leaving the team with out a viable starting safety, one would think that he would have learned his lesson after the C.C. Brown fiasco....
one more comment about the safety situation

I wonder if Reese would like to rethink his thinking about letting Will Hill walk away....

your previous handles?

They'll draft one, continue to try and add a young ascending vet, eg, Miles, if his price drops, and the young dudes on the roster are going to get some serious burn.

One of his current alter-egos is brownstone (or, as we fondly know him, brownstain).

Why, so the next time he got caught the Giants would lose him for a full year? And this on top of him lying through his teeth to them about it being second-hand smoke.
cross your fingers
The Tempest : 4/10/2015 9:27 pm : link
The chances of Reese drafting a prodigy at safety is low. Available free agents aren't upgrades and bringing Demps back actually makes it worse. Converting a CB sounds great right now because we are out of good choices.

He's at best a 3rd Safety. If we're relying on him to be a starter...well, then we're fucked.

As for the original question, my mock draft based on players I like in positions of need (which I don't believe. I always believe in taking the best player available) is taking Derron Smith of Fresno State in the third round and Ibraheim Campbell of Northwestern in the fourth round. I have Smith as my second rated Safety and Campbell, who I have never watched, but just read up on, is my fourth or fifth rated Safety. However, I could see both going before where I mocked them going.

I like both those picks Anakim. It would make for an interesting camp battle with Berhe and Taylor.

The Giants might be hot for Randall.
Few things

Id bring Stevie Brown back, at least he'll be an experienced body, they say it takes 2 full years to recover from an ACL so hopefully he bounces back. He will be cheap and at worst case scenario give him his walking papers.

secondly I'd package a couple of late round picks and acquire a veteran safety, doesnt have to be a pro-bowl guy but a starting caliber safety that can be had. Like a James Ihedigbo, Mike Adams type player.

Im not opposed to drafting another safety either but this draft does not seem to have many

resign Stevie Brown after the draft to get some sort of veteran presence back in there. Currently the Giants are sitting tight and hoping a top talent drops in the draft, but even if we got a guy we had rated as a late 1 in the 2nd or 2nd in the 3rd/4th...I still think they should grab Stevie Brown or a guy they like better.

I'd rather have the pot smoker than Stevie Brown. No, seriously.

Agreed, but realistically...
No reason to do anything before the draft.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/12/2015 8:42 am : link
If need aligns with value, maybe they land a potential 2016 starter in Tartt, Randall, Rowe, Amos, etc. Whether that happens will help steer their vet FA moves. Stevie Brown seems likely in any case. If they come up empty in the draft, a younger vet with some upside becomes more of a priority.

The depth chart entering camp will probably show Taylor, Berhe and a cheap vet like Brown as the top three safeties. Not sure which of them will get the first crack at the Kenny Phillips single high / center fielder role. Assuming Brown returns, much will depend on whether he recovers more athleticism in post-surgery year two. Bennett Jackson is another x-factor. We don't know how far the conversion project has progressed: for example, did he spend any time in the safeties room during his rehab?

With or without a promising rookie, David Merritt will have his hands full this summer.
The OP started out well
fkap : 4/12/2015 9:11 am : link
Safety is a legitimate concern.
However, before the OP was over, it turned into a shit on the Giants, and devolved downward from there. anyone on the roster, or suggested to pick up are deemed scrubs. any realistic scenario is scoffed at.

that's why people are calling OBJesus a troll.

Let's face it. there's limited options. our hopes for quality rest on either Behre/Cooper stepping up, we sign a mediocre vet who steps up, or we draft someone (pretty much what the rational folk on this thread pointed out, but which wasn't good enough for OP). problem with the draft is that we (meaning BBI channeling our inner Giants braintrust) have the top picks alotted to OL, DE, WR. Gonna be hard to squeeze a safety in a round where he's likely to be good enough to make a difference right away. So, yes, the safety situation isn't looking all that rosy. but it is what it is, and there are limited options.
not worried

with safeties during spags last stint he turned some low level safeties into starters (butler and gibril wilson) and got decent returns from them and according to rolle he thinks behre will be good, the is plenty of veteran CB who have lost a step to play pure DB anymore that would be fine at FS if you remember antrell rolle was a converted CB himself

plus they can always use another draft pick on one of the later round CB/S tweeners, pick one with enough size/speed to play FS the deon grant role spags used the first time around

i never liked fewells scheme bar that stretch during the superbowl run and i suspect that was more to do with the players than fewell, it lacked the aggression of the 86/90 giants and the game feel/anticipation spags had in 2007 defence.

was supposed to bend but not break but shattered all too often where megatron or dez bryant or others would be allowed to stroll thru the defence uncovered for an easy long play/touchdown,particuarly bad against the 2 minute offence several of those collapses cost them a win far too often
