Lately, we have seen a lot of talk on BBI about Randy Gregory at #9. For many reasons, I don’t think there is any chance they take the guy with that #9 pick.
One of the things that bothers me about Gregory is seeing college OL handle him in the run game.
I’ve seen some posting highlight videos of Gregory. These videos mean nothing. What I’ve done is watch the guy for entire games. I recently watched the Rutgers and USC game. In each game you can see the problems.
On the other hand, there is a very interesting and explosive DE prospect that does not have the same problems. He’s much bigger than Gregory and, more importantly, he plays even bigger.
Below I linked a video of his game vs USC. It isn’t a 10 play highlight reel. It shows every snap. What the video shows is a full game of ass kicking play from a DL. What you see is a guy rocking OL back and whipping them with quickness.
I would describe his play as “consistently disruptive” and you will too after watching it.
It’s this future stud 4-3 DE, and not Gregory, who checks all of the boxes that the NYG look for in a DE. Think bigger and more explosive Trent Cole.
6034 270lbs with long arms, 11” hands, and elite measurables. 40: 4.62 Vertical: 39” Broad: 10’7”
Combine Note: His 20 (4.19) and 60 (11.75) yard shuttle beat several RBs,WRs and DBs including Alabama S Landon Collins
Reasons Giants will consider him at #9:
- NYG place high value on DE
- DE is a need. We only have one quality DE on the team right now and he can leave next season.
- Elite and explosive athlete with ideal size and length.
- 2 way impact player. Not just a college pass rusher. He's excellent vs the run with a game that projects well into the NFL.
- Tuck-like versatility – Can rush from outside, slide inside on pass downs or stand up and rush.
- Sr Bowl – Giants put a lot of weight on these practices. Odi was one of the most impressive players in one on one drills.
- Dominant play vs quality comp. Just like JPP was in his last year of college ball, Odi was consistently disruptive. And (like JPP) he did it vs quality OL.
Some may dismiss him because of the limited production. 2014 was really the only year that Odi had significant playing time. But this was not an issue with JPP. It shouldn't be here.
The sacks numbers? I think he had 6.5 but that doesn't matter. He proved to be a nightmare to block all year. Production is not all about sacks. He played 3-4DE at UCLA and they moved him inside often. More important than piling up college sacks, what Odi did was prove to be a nightmare to block. And he showed a game that will work in the NFL.
Odi dominated at the end of the year (See USC and Bowl game). He followed it up with an outstanding SR Bowl and then the measurables confirmed it all.
This guy has NYG DE written all over him.
The only issue is medical. He had hip surgery in 2013. If the medical checks he's a top 15 player. And getting him at #9 makes a lot of sense for the Giants.

Round 2: DT Carl Davis
And we're set on the DL.
Balance value with need. I hope it isn't 2 DL back to back.
No more injury history types early on. We need an infusion of healthy talent. I can actually live with the low college sack production - not the medical.
Like Dupree, this may or may not be scheme related .. the scouting staff should know. Dupree, while not as stout, has health on his side. I see these two players as comparable.. but at #9 i think you can get more.
Good chance Car. goes OL. There's is worse off than ours.
When I got to this guy - as well as Arik Armstead - my reaction was, "these are Giants-like picks."
I don't think the Giants will take either, but of the two, Armstead would be more likely. He has the upside and measureables that appeal to Reese. Armstead was also hampered by an ankle injury for most of the season. But I just think O's medical, and Armstead's rawness will cause Reese to pass.
2nd round worked out well with Strahan and Osi. 3rd round for Tuck.
There's at least a 50-50 chance he goes between 20 and 32.
2) Production
I'd target him at 40.
Since when did USC become the only game to evaluate prospects on?
That would be way shorter than ideal height in a DE, so I must be reading the coda incorrectly.
good post
Giants also had a free agent DE either last year or the year before with a crazy African name that wasn't supossed to make the team but was so good in pre-season that he cracked the roster. Name escapes me though...

Ojomo
Ojomo - Right...
I thought he was a find. He dominated guys he was playing against in exhibition games. Wish Coughlin gave him a longer look.
Collins: "What I do know is they will get an impact player at #9."
You know this how?????
6ft 3" and 4/6.
It is a good measuring stick to compare 2 DE. Same quality opponent. That is all.
For the record, Gregory's questionable NFL game was not limited to only the USC game.
For me, that is Odi.
Odi is explosive. If asked to rush the edge consistently he'll get there. At UCLA he often moved inside and lined up over the G. They also had the ends slanting hard inside a lot.
No sacks in the game but the "production" is still there. He's disruptive the entire game. One of his QB pressures he hit the QB arm for a pick 6.
This link is all of his snaps in the Virginia game. It's his first back after missing all of 2013.
Odi vs Virginia - ( New Window )
I disagree. You have to infer additional production with health, because his production doesn't scream Top 2-3 defensive player. He's still about projection.
Also I get the dislike for Gregory here. But to deny that he has top edge rusher talent is foolish.
The extra weight his frame could easily handle, he is a much better looking 4-3 DE prospect than Beasley/Ray.
In addition to Cosell and Boylehart (who isn't perfect but two who I respect). Here is yet another analyst who sees much of the same thing at least talent wise:
Once again the pot stuff gives me pause but I trust the medical much more than Odighizuwa and if Giants do a thorough check, would have no problem with him at 9.
Top edge rusher in this draft? - ( New Window )
Watch the video of the Virginia game. He stat line is 2 tackles. You saying he wasn't productive in that game? He was in backfield all day, consistent QB pressure, and his hit on the QB resulted in a pick 6.
Production is not about sacks.
It's a lot more important to see a guy who is consistently disruptive and that is exactly what you have with Odi.
Like Dupree, this may or may not be scheme related .. the scouting staff should know. Dupree, while not as stout, has health on his side. I see these two players as comparable.. but at #9 i think you can get more.
Totally agree RAIN, 100%
Armstead does fit the tree profile Spags likes in his front 7 though but his lack of get up and go worries me.
Like the player, but there is no way we are investing a top 9 pick on a guy with that type of medical history.
One issue that popped into my head the other day, in view of the coaching staff being given the win or else mandate - wonder what Reese's opinion is re: the staff being able to avoid the "or else". And, could that factor into the draft strategy?
#9 or #25? You don't draft a guy in round 1 if you think the hip is an issue. If the medical clears at #25 I'd bet its OK for the team at #9.

I did. But there's only a 25% chance of that.

Doctor gave his patient six months to live. Patient couldn't pay his bill, so the doctor gave him another six months.
As I've been saying forever now it seems. I'd take Devante Parker at 9 over any of those guys. I've stated this several times before. If he doesn't break his foot and miss 7 games,we're likely talking about him as the first receiver off the board.
But for all those who are clamoring that the Giants reach for an OL at 9,they really can't say much about drafting Odi in the same spot. Both would be reaches IMO with better talent still on the board. Now having said all that,if the Giants do shy away from going BPA,Parker IMO,then I'd rather see them draft a guy like Odi than Scherff.
His 6 game stretch last year was something to watch, especially coming off a broken foot.
He has everything you look for in a #1 WR and the Giants would be lucky if they draft this kid.
I'm a big time Victor Cruz fan and I really hope he comes back 100%,but the Giants just can't count on that after the type of injury he had.
I hate to say it but do we really want to go into the season with only OBJ and an inconsistent Randall? Honestly I wouldn't want any of the current backup recievers out there consistently if something were to happen to OBJ,god forbid.
I think if you have a chance to upgrade any position through the draft you have to jump on it. Parker would be an instant upgrade over Randall.
I know it would suck to see another high draft pick walk out the door but I'd make the exception to draft a talent like Parker.
Who knows, maybe Cruz doesn't come back and Randall stays at an affordable price next year. Only time will tell, but like I said, drafting Parker is a chance I think the Giants should take at 9. IMO I just can't see any other player at 9 that would offer the kind of upside he does. Maybe Beasley if he's there. That's only if the Giants believe he can be a 3 down LB in a 43. If they think he can drop in coverage, put his hand in the dirt to rush on 3rd down and obvious passing situations then I could see him being drafted over Parker. But that's not a likely scenario IMO!
But like any other year with whomever they select,I will become an instant fan and reserve my judgment until I see results on the field.
in all my years of watching Giant football and the draft,I've got what I wanted in the first round only once, and that was last year with OBJ. So hopefully I can get 2 in a row with the same type of results. We would all be so lucky right!?! HA..
If this kid isn't a diva and is ready to work , he could be the best WR in this draft. Giants will thoroughly evaluate the character I'm sure.
