Giants Target In Rd 1: UCLA DE Odighizuwa

KWALL2 : 4/13/2015 3:08 pm
Lately, we have seen a lot of talk on BBI about Randy Gregory at #9. For many reasons, I don’t think there is any chance they take the guy with that #9 pick.

One of the things that bothers me about Gregory is seeing college OL handle him in the run game.

I’ve seen some posting highlight videos of Gregory. These videos mean nothing. What I’ve done is watch the guy for entire games. I recently watched the Rutgers and USC game. In each game you can see the problems.

On the other hand, there is a very interesting and explosive DE prospect that does not have the same problems. He’s much bigger than Gregory and, more importantly, he plays even bigger.

Below I linked a video of his game vs USC. It isn’t a 10 play highlight reel. It shows every snap. What the video shows is a full game of ass kicking play from a DL. What you see is a guy rocking OL back and whipping them with quickness.

I would describe his play as “consistently disruptive” and you will too after watching it.

It’s this future stud 4-3 DE, and not Gregory, who checks all of the boxes that the NYG look for in a DE. Think bigger and more explosive Trent Cole.

6034 270lbs with long arms, 11” hands, and elite measurables. 40: 4.62 Vertical: 39” Broad: 10’7”

Combine Note: His 20 (4.19) and 60 (11.75) yard shuttle beat several RBs,WRs and DBs including Alabama S Landon Collins

Reasons Giants will consider him at #9:
- NYG place high value on DE
- DE is a need. We only have one quality DE on the team right now and he can leave next season.
- Elite and explosive athlete with ideal size and length.
- 2 way impact player. Not just a college pass rusher. He's excellent vs the run with a game that projects well into the NFL.
- Tuck-like versatility – Can rush from outside, slide inside on pass downs or stand up and rush.
- Sr Bowl – Giants put a lot of weight on these practices. Odi was one of the most impressive players in one on one drills.
- Dominant play vs quality comp. Just like JPP was in his last year of college ball, Odi was consistently disruptive. And (like JPP) he did it vs quality OL.

Some may dismiss him because of the limited production. 2014 was really the only year that Odi had significant playing time. But this was not an issue with JPP. It shouldn't be here.

The sacks numbers? I think he had 6.5 but that doesn't matter. He proved to be a nightmare to block all year. Production is not all about sacks. He played 3-4DE at UCLA and they moved him inside often. More important than piling up college sacks, what Odi did was prove to be a nightmare to block. And he showed a game that will work in the NFL.

Odi dominated at the end of the year (See USC and Bowl game). He followed it up with an outstanding SR Bowl and then the measurables confirmed it all.

This guy has NYG DE written all over him.

The only issue is medical. He had hip surgery in 2013. If the medical checks he's a top 15 player. And getting him at #9 makes a lot of sense for the Giants.

Medical on Odi is substancial
Coach Mason : 4/13/2015 3:12 pm : link
two major hip surgeries? Tuck had quite a bit of an injury history himself and he dropped to the third round.

You don't take that type of medical risk in the top 10.
I like Odi
Emil : 4/13/2015 3:12 pm : link
but not at #9. Trade down to around 15 and I'd say sure.
I'd be ecstatic to draft him
JonC : 4/13/2015 3:12 pm : link
provided the medicals check out.
I've been...
Strip-Sack : 4/13/2015 3:13 pm : link
thinking he could be a surprise pick at 9 for a while but the hip surgeries need to be checked out obviously. I'd be happy with the pick.
Injury concerns and limited production...
Dunedin81 : 4/13/2015 3:13 pm : link
talented kid, but not a Top 10 pick.
Gregory OTOH
Coach Mason : 4/13/2015 3:14 pm : link
checks all the boxes except for the MJ.

He has played at 255 previous and fits the Giant preffered height/arm lenght/angular frame profile.

Add how unproductive Odi was in College...Gregory makes a ton more sense at 9 than Odi does.
I'd like all of the Gregory fans
KWALL2 : 4/13/2015 3:16 pm : link
to watch that video I linked. It's every snap vs USC. And you'll see an ass kicker. He does things Gregory can't. And things you need to do to play DE for the NYG.

It's all about the medical. I know nothing about it. But the player is worthy of this #9 pick. As a player, he's an outstanding upside pick with no downside.

He will help any NFL team instantly.

He's ready to play right now.
He's the sort of guy the Giants would pick at #9 for sure.
Curtis in VA : 4/13/2015 3:16 pm : link
I like him better than the other DE's as well.
agree with Emil
GiantsFan84 : 4/13/2015 3:17 pm : link
if you want Odi you trade down and draft him in the mid Rd 1
also agree with Kwall
GiantsFan84 : 4/13/2015 3:18 pm : link
I love his game and is probably the safest DE pick for the Giants.
RE: Gregory
JonC : 4/13/2015 3:19 pm : link
I don't think his supporters realize how poorly his skillset projects to 4-3 DE versus NFL competition.

Add my agreement. I like him a lot but those hip surgeries are concerning.
I actually like Odi quite a bit
Coach Mason : 4/13/2015 3:21 pm : link
but wouldn't touch him at 9. And Gregory and Smith are better values IMO.

Preston Smith has even better measuables height, weight, arm length, excellent 3-cone, (except for 40) and better College production.

Mario Edwards is starting to get some chatter

KWALL2 : 4/13/2015 3:23 pm : link
The Giants will take a close look on how he handled good college OL. Not the straight line path to the QB sacks. That means nothing.

How did he do at that position vs quality OL? It's a big negative for Gregory. I don't think they would consider him.

Why did they draft JPP? A big part of it was the way he handled quality OL. In particular the Giants mentioned how he played against Anthony Davis. It may have been a limited sample but JPP did things vs quality OL in college that was easy to project to NFL.

With Gregory? You don't see it.

With Odi? You do.

I really like the WR White and Parker. But Odi is right ther with them as players I'd like to see on the Giants next year.
If he gets past the Panthers in the mid 20's
Brandon Walsh : 4/13/2015 3:24 pm : link
we may have a shot in round 2.

Mario is probably a 4-3 DT or 3-4 DE at the NFL level
JonC : 4/13/2015 3:25 pm : link
.
Brandon
KWALL2 : 4/13/2015 3:28 pm : link
that's a lot of teams that could use him between that Panther pick and our #2.

If medical isn't an issue, I say no chance he'll be there in round 2. I'd bet on 1st or 2nd DE off the board.
The Giants are not drafting Gregory
Brandon Walsh : 4/13/2015 3:30 pm : link
They are not spending the number 9 pick on a question mark

1. I don't care what his weight is now, his frame does not project to gain weight to be an every down 4-3 defensive end. Regardless of what those want to believe about pass rushers, a 4-3 defensive end HAS to play the run.

2. Regardless of what those believe Spags can draw up as a hybrid for him, the truth is this coaching staff may not be here next year and the front office will not draft a player that doesn't fit their mold of a player at a premium position. This is a long term investment

3. He is in the drug program alrady, they are not going to use their first premium pick in a decade on a 21 year old kid with one stupid decision can be suspsended.

The Gregory narrative is stale for those trying to talk themselves into something. When you look at it reasonably, the Giants are not touching him at 9.
The Gregory comparisons to Dion Jordan
JonC : 4/13/2015 3:30 pm : link
are reasonable, imv. Two players who don't anchor versus OL, don't shed blocks once engaged, and are easily engulfed and washed away from the ball. Even at 255, he doesn't demonstrate he can handle these duties versus college OL. The only thing he really checks off for NYG is long arms and height, he doesn't play big in any way.

Agreed, but there will also be a run on CBs, OLs, and WRs in the teens and 20's pushing players down. I say its unlikely but I think a better chance he falls to the 2nd and we take him then taking him at 9. Not saying its right, just what I think is realistic.

Fully agree KWALL.
I'm thinking
KWALL2 : 4/13/2015 3:34 pm : link
Round 1: DE Odi
Round 2: DT Carl Davis

And we're set on the DL.
You guys crack me up
collins25 : 4/13/2015 3:35 pm : link
The hip surgeries from '13 are now a concern? Where was the concern at the senior bowl practices and game? What about the Combine workouts and interviews? Oh yeah, then we have the trade down and get him in the mid 1st rd. I'm quite sure that every team in the league has done their due diligence on him and any other player they are considering. If he is the guy they want then you take him when you have the chance, not wait to see if he falls to the next round. We know nothing! I admit, I don't have a clue who they like with their 1st pick or any other pick for that matter. What I do know is they will get an impact player at #9.
I've seen him mocked to the giants in the 2nd rd quite often.

Odi is going up against a mammoth 350lb RT in Zach Banner who in 2014 was in his first season starting but was one of the most heavily recruited linemen in the nation before joining USC. Odi is giving the guys fits, including bull rushing this human mountain. That tape form the 1st quarter is very impressive. Osi is almost unblockable an plays with a ton of intensity. He also plays a position where the Giants don't have an incumbent starter.

Thanks, KWALL. Good post.

"Mocking The Draft analyst Dan Kadar liked the pick, writing that "A player like Odighizuwa is the perfect scheme fit for the Giants. He's a traditional 4-3 end with the power to hold the edge against the run, and enough quickness and speed to get into the backfield."

You make compelling arguments. At 40? Definitely.
Coach Mason : 4/13/2015 3:52 pm : link
9, I'd be surprised.

I don't trust the medical but obviously I am not privy to the in depth evalation and prognosis of his hip surgeries.
Good with Odi in the 2nd....
Emlen'sGremlins : 4/13/2015 3:56 pm : link
....after Scherff in the 1st.

Only way the Giants take Gregory is if he drops like a rock like Manningham in '08.
He
Eric from BBI : Admin : 4/13/2015 4:11 pm : link
has the physical skill set the Giants target.
Ugh
David B. : 4/13/2015 4:17 pm : link
You could probably get Odighizuwa in the 2nd round. I don't think anyone has a first round grade on him.

2nd round worked out well with Strahan and Osi. 3rd round for Tuck.
I'd rather take a pot smoker than a guy

good post
blapre74 : 4/13/2015 4:19 pm : link
I have liked this guy for awhile. the Giants are going to have a good draft beginning with a DE who can rush the passer. There are plenty of Olinemen and wrs in subsequent rounds.

And its not.
I hope not

Drafting these guys who already have a medical history is just a nightmare. We need people who can stay on the field.
mock drafts are bullshit
djm : 4/13/2015 4:30 pm : link
all it takes is one team to like a player more than the mocks to render those mocks completely worthless. Rest assured, one team definitely likes a player more than the mockers do.

Forget about the value. Teams pick guys based on their board and whether they feel that player would slip to the next round. Typically, a team probably feels that if they themselves like a player that another team likes that same player. That's why they draft him "early"
He is my favorite DE in the draft
rasbutant : 4/13/2015 4:37 pm : link
But he comes with Risk. Hopeful he last to the 2nd round pick like Tank Carradine did last year.

2013 / Round: 2 / Pick: 40 ---Maybe its meant to be!
sorry

but there is just no way u can justify taking a guy w/that medical history top 10.
i think its much more likely he shocks the world and slips to late 2 or even round 3 - like justin tuck did
Yeah - I got my head slammed into the wall for suggesting this

I know as I was reading Nawrocki's book last night - DE/LB chapters - is that all of the guys that have been thrown around as possible #9 picks just don't fit the NYG make-up for a DE.

When I got to this guy - as well as Arik Armstead - my reaction was, "these are Giants-like picks."
Cosmic
KWALL2 : 4/13/2015 5:07 pm : link
Isn't that an impressive video?

I see a bigger and more explosive Trent Cole. I think this is a game the Giants will really consider when projecting him on their team. Odi has a game we can use on the Giants.

Watch Odi vs USC
KWALL2 : 4/13/2015 5:08 pm : link
then watch Gregory vs the same USC team. It will end any love affair you have for Gregory.

Definitely not 1.

No more injury history types early on. We need an infusion of healthy talent. I can actually live with the low college sack production - not the medical.

Largely this is the same issue

with Dupree. He stays blocked, and doesn't shed well. He holds the point however.

Like Dupree, this may or may not be scheme related .. the scouting staff should know. Dupree, while not as stout, has health on his side. I see these two players as comparable.. but at #9 i think you can get more.

He is very reminiscent

of Tuck. I definitely think he is a candidate.
