Did you ever get to play with someone who's in the league?

OBJesus : 4/14/2015 7:42 pm
I went to Hamilton High West, a pretty small high school on the border of Trenton in NJ. My freshman year I was still a little fat kid so I played DT and lined up directly next to Jayson Dimanche (LB for the Bengals, signed as a UDFA I believe 2 years ago) who played DE at the time, I'll never forget the first training camp we had and when we got to hitting drills for the first time, as you would expect from a bunch of HS freshman the impact was pretty underwhelming until this very tall very lanky kid named Jayson stepped up and absolutely wrecked some kid, I mean you could here the pads crash if you were 3 blocks away from the practice field.. everything stopped lol as no one was expecting it from this guy. After high school I believe he went on to the same D2 college Brandon Jacobs went to, I hadn't even heard about that until a couple years ago when I heard he might make it to the NFL! I couldn't believe it, a few months later he's in training camp with the bengals in what happened to be the year they were being covered on the HBO show hard knocks, and shockingly enough he was heavily featured in it! Me and my friends couldn't believe how much face time he was getting on the show when we were watching, it was pretty awesome haha I think he's only the second athlete from my high school to play professionally, the only other was Kevin Johnson who some of you may remember, he was a journeyman WR for the browns/ravens not too long ago, I know he had at least 1 1,000 yard year in the pros.

Anyway was just wondering if anybody here has experienced anything similar, and has a cool story to tell?
Played HS Baseball with Mike Jones

Billy Pickle......played for Raiders from Rutgers

Walt Weiss, who went on to to play for the A's, Rockies, Marlins and Braves. He was a year older and we played little through high school together. Great player and even better guy.

Also played football against Seth Joyner from Spring Valley. He was not only an LB, but a running back who was huge and ran all over us pipsqueaks.

Jeff Kemp in college. I had no sports experience and Jeff was the varsity football QB and yet I almost tackled him in the open field once, and by almost I mean I managed to get an arm on him as he blew right threw me.
If I had played....

...my final 2 years of HS I would have scrimmaged against Chris Snee. We played a preseason game against Montrose, PA more or less every year.
I played soccer with John McEnroe at Trinity School
dannysection 313 : 4/14/2015 8:25 pm : link
He was very good, FYI. He was also very weird and didn't talk to any of us.

McEnroe sat out our biggest game my senior year because of a thing injury (he was a year behind me, though we're the same age). We all called him a woos, etc, though he had some sort of big tennis tournament the next day...

Guess he made the right choice.
Bill Wallace
Daniel in Kentucky : 4/14/2015 8:26 pm : link
He played with Marino at Pitt.
Marino once said "...the best wr he ever played with was Bill Wallace" Loosely quoted.
he retired for personal reasons.

I played him in a touch game and he flipped my brothers friend in the air by 'two hand touching' him in the chest.

Super nice guy.

I grew up playing sandlot football with Dave Jennings
Del Shofner : 4/14/2015 8:29 pm : link
almost every day. He lived nearby and we ran with the same bunch of guys. He didn't want to play organized football until junior year of HS.
I sparred with Tyrell Biggs when he was in then-West Germany...

Scrimmaged against Pompton Lakes in 1967. We were both sophomores. Lined up and he said we're running right over you. Here came the freight train. Figured if he was that strong he wasn't quick. Samething, we're running right over you. Here came that damn train again. Put me at linebacker right then and there where I started for 3 years.

Beer pong with Jeremy Trueblood - freshman year at BC.
I played baseball against
Matt M. : 4/14/2015 9:23 pm : link
Manny Ramirez and Frank Rodriguez in HS (mostly summer ball). In the same league there were a number of players who went on to the minors, but I think these were the only 2 major leaguers.
Would have played against Chris Simms but was hurt that game
TampaGiant : 4/14/2015 9:42 pm : link

I played against Dwayne Jarrets brother. He also was a 6'4" receiver who abused H.S. Players. I played mostly RB and OLB but that game my coach told me to mentally take him out of the game. I had 1 responsibility, cover him stride for stride..... He only caught 1 pass for 7 yds despite being thrown to 11 times. We won !
Also had to cover Troy Murphy in basketball 1 year
TampaGiant : 4/14/2015 9:50 pm : link
In a Christmas tournament at Mendham HS. Me 6'2" him 6'11"..... It didn't go well lol
Played on a summer all star travel team
mfsd : 4/14/2015 9:51 pm : link
one year with Carl Pavano...good guy (at least, he was then)...my memory is he didn't throw that hard at the time, but had his nasty sinker even then. I was 17, he was 16 I think

First time I ever tried chewing tobacco was with him and some other guys on that team one night in our hotel after a double header. I puked for an hour. Ug.
Played basketball with John Candelaria

Played town softball with Rich Suebert in Jefferson while he re-habed his broken bones.
Can't say I have.
Mike in Long Beach : 4/14/2015 10:10 pm : link
Played with Todd Boeckman in intramural softball in college. He was the Buckeyes starting quarterback, but he never went pro. Per the football coaching staff's rules, he wasn't allowed to the play the field and was urged to jog when running the bases... didn't matter much as he'd hit home run after home run when the rest of us could barely hit it close to the fences.

Played against JP Loseman while he was at Venice High
RC02XX : 4/15/2015 7:29 am : link
in Venice, California. He was one of the best QBs in LA County, but while he would throw for a ton of yards against us between the 20's, once he got within the redzone, we would kill him. As a CB/S, I had to deal with his speedy receivers in a spread offense (one of few in our conference). Thankfully, we kicked the crap out of them my junior and senior year.

Oh yeah...the guy was a complete douchebag.
Oh yeah...also played intramural rec league touch football
RC02XX : 4/15/2015 7:31 am : link
against Domonique Foxworth (from the Ravens). Even after his knee injury/recovery, the dude was in a whole another level speedwise compared to most of us.
Not football

I shot hoops with Jeff Ruland...

I scrimmaged against Sam Perkins

Played high school football with
Beezer : 4/15/2015 8:14 am : link
the Kimmel brothers (Jamie and Jerry). Jamie played for the Raiders - short career ended by injury - but he was the long-snapper and played in a bunch of games for a couple seasons. Jerry actually started two games at linebacker for the Giants in '87 - his only two NFL games.) (Their older brother Jon also played a few games for Philly and the Redskins.) They were all monsters in high school. Jamie actually play QB his senior year.
Sparred against ...L Spinks

Holmes, Witherspoon and Bonecrusher....play left DE in high school and Harry Carson played the right side ...we both made All City and All Conference while Harry made All State....OBTW Spinks landed the heavyer shots...the side of my neck still hurts to today...when it rains.
I used to follow

Greg Sacks the NASCAR driver to school. I could never pass him. It used to take an hour to drive 1 mile because he would never make a right turn.

yeah, i'd say playing across from a Giants legend and sparring againt all of those boxing greats gives you the easy win on this thread!!
I played with Eric Lane who got some playing time with the Giants

but it was intramural volleyball in high school. And only 1 game.

Does that count?
I played against..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/15/2015 11:03 am : link
Kris Benson in a baseball tourney in Myrtle Beach and we beat him 2-1.

A little lesser known MLB'er, Greg Keagle pitched against us a few times in HS and we rocked him every time. How he made the major leagues, I'll never know.

Not a major leaguer, but our HS got into a bench-clearing brawl with the crosstown team over comments made by Kirt Manwaring's brother. Kirt played as a C for several years - his brother didn't and was apparently bitter:)

I didn't play football in H.S (one of my biggest regrets)...

but the varsity high school football coach my freshman year was none other than Mr. Charlie Weiss (yeah, THAT Charlie Weiss). He won a State championship at Franklin High School in '88. I THINK, but am not sure, after winning that championship is when Weiss got hired by Parcells while he was with the Jets. We didn't have any players go pro (that I know of) but I know the QB for the other state championship that my high school won (I think it was in '90... my Junior year) went on to play QB at Syracuse, Louis Soloman. Don't know what happened to him after that.

In my freshman year at college the starting QB was Jay 'Sky' Walker... who went on to have a shot in the NFL but didn't make it (I think he was with the Vikings for a year or two) and his primary receiver was Gary 'The Flea' Harrell, who also had a shot in the NFL but didn't make it.

That's all I got.
Check that...

he was actually pretty good in the 95 preseason....i think he ran back a punt or a kick for a long touchdown, but never made the team.

FatMan in Charlotte : 4/15/2015 1:46 pm : link
I'm pretty sure he made the team in 95 but then was cut during the season. I could be wrong though.
also, I came close to playing against Eddie George
Greg from LI : 4/15/2015 1:50 pm : link
But I was on the JV when he came to town and kicked our asses for Fork Union. We got the last laugh, though, since our coach found out that he was actually a postgrad who wasn't eligible for their high school team. They were forced to forfeit all their wins with him and we ended up the league champs by default. TAKE THAT, YOU CHEATING BASTARD!
Yup... you guys are right...
T-Bone : 4/15/2015 1:52 pm : link
for some reason I thought he'd also been picked up by another team like the Jets for a quick second too.

after looking it up you are right, he did play in 4 games and saw action as a returner.

it was in fact a 40 yard touchdown catch from Stan White not a long punt return for a TD in the preseason game. good to see he's got a head coaching gig in the college ranks with Howard.
While not an NFL player (he did play college football)

went to a school that mostly ran the ball, had a great time wouldn't change it for the world. But one little thing sometimes makes me think what could of been. I had the option of attending Ramapo before my freshman year. Would of been in the same class as Chris Simms.

Did play against JP Foschi former Jet tight end. I believe he was a Junior my Senior year. Didn't really stand out compared with the rest of his team, guess he blossomed later on.

Still not a bad memory there Les. I barely remember him being on the team.

B in ALB : 4/15/2015 2:17 pm : link
dozens who played in the NFL, CFL and various arena leagues. The best athletes I've ever been around, practiced with, worked out with, etc were guys that made it hard to explain some of the things they did. Whether it's speed, strength, athleticism or an innate sense of making the right play against heavy odds. The guys that stood out were guys like Edgerrin James, Tony Gaiter, Kenny Holmes, Yatil Green from Miami. Tee Martin, Al Wilson and Peerless Price from UT. Jim Drunkenmiller from VaT. Stephen Alexander from Oklahoma. Really too many to mention.

After college I played USCLA club lacrosse. For 2 years I ran on the same midfield line as Bruce Van Ness, Rutgers HOF football player who was a 5th rd. draft pick by the Falcons and played a year with them at TE. He also played 3 years with the Montreal Alouettes. He had been an honorable mention AA in lacrosse while at Rutgers. There weren't to many 6'3" 235 lb. midfielders playing lacrosse back then.

While on a temporary work assignment in Albany I played some pick up volleyball games with Phil Jackson when he was coach of the Albany Poltroons CBA team.
