NFT: The Who Hits 50!, tonight

tony stg : 4/15/2015 8:30 am
The first rock-and-roll concert I ever went to was The Who. It was in 1976 at the old Capital Center in Landover, Maryland just after "The Who By Numbers" album came out. The Who kick off their latest (and last?) North American tour tonight in Tampa and almost 40 years from when I first saw them I will be taking my 16 year old son to see them tonight; he is the same age as I was back then. Looking forward to sharing this experience with him.
Awesome! Have a great time.....

The Who has always been one of my favorite bands. I mentioned in a thread that I always enjoyed their anti-establishment themes and, of course, there showmanship.

Pete Townsend is a psycho on stage.
Saw them in Toronto in summer of 89

and 70s put on better shows than most of today's acts.

When you think of guys in their 60s and 70s doing what they're doing it's pretty awesome. Most guys at that age are barely able to get out of their Lay-Z-Boy.
tony i took my 16 year old son to see the quadraphenia tour

last year, he LOVED it and he's into death metal - converge, dillinger escape plan- but he also knows and plays music. Was worth every penny,

2000 (Blues to the Bush) and while Roger's voice was a bit worse for wear, Pete was killing it on guitar and the "Ox" was still with them. Wish I had seen them earlier in their careers, but it was still a great show. Have been a fan for many years!
Saw then in 1982 (Shea) when I was 13...

1989 (Giants Stadium), 1997 (MSG), and 2002 (MSG). Great each time. Though to be honest, I think I liked them best in 2002. It was the tour after Ox died, so I think they were really ripping it up on his behalf. They totally rocked, no backup singers, just a four piece plus a keyboardist.

(I was pretty young for the first farewell show, and the Tommy reunion tour had a huge ensemble, and the 1997 Quadrophenia show had too many guest performances to be a legit Who show, IMO)

One tour I wish I went to was them with Jimmy Page & the Black Crowes in 2000. That must have been awesome.
My favorite band

of all time. Have a wonderful time.

I met Townshend twice in thee 90s and had him sign the Cd booklet to my favorite album of all time...All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes.

And I saw them backstage at MSG in mid 2000s. Hung out with their famous manager, Bill Curbishley, and we told stories (I knew them from all the books), for two hours.

I also saw them in 76

First concert, in Jacksonville, FL. Saw them again at MSG later in the 70s and several times since. Quadrophenia tour (with my 16 year old) was fantastic. I've got tickets for the November stop in DC.
They were my first concert also

Hard to believe now.
Great show last night...

Joan Jett opened and put together a solid set. Roger's voice was a little rough at the beginning but improved as the night went on. Pete's guitar work was phenomenal from the opening chord to the final note. His energy is still at a very high level. Zachary Starkey was really good on the drums. Love, Reign O'er Me was just outstanding; I thought Roger would struggle but he hit every note. The show almost made me feel young again and I enjoyed sharing the experience with my son. Well worth going to if you get the chance.

Here is the set-list:

The Concert for New York City was perhaps the greatest musical performance ever. It lifted a nation.
