Rangers looking to better their result from last year. Isles back in the playoff. Devils at home this time (and sadly, Ryanne Clowe may never suit up again according to reports). Around the league, Kane is back, and the Bruins GM is not.
Should be a great playoffs.

Metro and Central matchups look particularly awesome this year.

re: the Graves slash
Davisian : 4/16/2015 12:57 am : link
It wasn't pretty, but there's a clip on YouTube of much of that game and you see slashes almost as bad from both teams all game long. It was definitely in the game much more then.

It was actually surprising that Graves even got a suspension.

Now it's a clear cut game or two.

Washington's crowd was absolutely dreadful. Can't believe that was a playoff game.

The Islanders played a very good game defensively. I was impressed. I can't think of too many quality scoring opportunities for the Capitals, despite seemingly holding the puck for the majority of the second half of the game. They were all outside shots, etc.

The Predators loss was brutal. To go up 3-0 and lose...

The Senators/Habs series could be a great one. That rule needs to be amended - Subban did not deserve to be ejected for that.

Didn't see the Calgary/VAN game. I don't think too highly of either team, but my distrust in Anaheim gives the winner a legitimate shot at the WCF.
Outside of the Sedin's, there's really nothing particularly impressive
arcarsenal : 4/16/2015 8:42 am : link
.. about the Nucks.

Of all the teams in the WC playoffs, the Canucks just seem the least threatening.

Yet Subban got nothing as far as suspension. Makes no sense. The league should have waited until they found out the injury severity before immediatly saying there would be no further punishment.

Well there's no reason they can't go back and change their minds...
jv : 4/16/2015 12:49 pm : link
I mean I'm sure they won't but they can if they'd like to..

pjcas18 : 4/16/2015 12:52 pm : link
surprised there is no suspension.

although no idea what a wrist microfracture is.

The only google links are about Stone.

arcarsenal : 4/16/2015 1:00 pm : link
I wouldn't be furious if he wasn't suspended. I kinda think the game misconduct was sufficient. It was shitty but I didn't feel like it was overwhelmingly malicious.

What Byfuglien did to Miller a couple weeks ago seemed a lot worse as far as intent goes, IMO.
What makes Subban's slash interesting is that he threatened
Andy in Halifax : 4/16/2015 1:04 pm : link
Stone the last time they played and clearly targeted him last night. A broken wrist off a baseball swing slash... definitely deserved 5 and a game. Absurd to think otherwise Brett.
I agree with arc.
Andy in Halifax : 4/16/2015 1:05 pm : link
No suspension, but 5 and game was entirely sufficient.
.
arcarsenal : 4/16/2015 1:06 pm : link
Didn't know there was a little bit of a history between them. I thought Subban just lost his cool.

That changes things slightly but I still don't think he deserves a suspension. I do think he should have been ejected as he was though.
The interesting thing will be the retaliation
pjcas18 : 4/16/2015 1:13 pm : link
Cameron, stupidly, came out publicly and said if Subban isn't suspended the Senators will slash one of Montreal's players.

If he said nothing and just let hockey take care of itself it would happen and be over, but because he said that if someone does retaliate there will have to be punishment IMO.
As fans of each team, we kinda knew this would get ugly
Andy in Halifax : 4/16/2015 1:18 pm : link
They've hated each other from 2013, and its only gotten worse since.

Ottawa has to be careful though, they can't goon it up and lose focus on winning. They can't go down 0-2. It sounds cowardly, but they might be better off to bait Montreal into penalties and try and sneak a W before going home. It's not like Montreal will intimidate anyone, that's not how they're built.
Apparently Chris Neil
jv : 4/16/2015 1:19 pm : link
will be in the lineup if Stone can't go. I'm sure that will be uneventful.

Not cowardly at all, it's smart. Especially if the player of target is Subban, he's not exactly known for his discipline.

1. Fuck you Andy.

2. I really don't think injuries should dictate suspensions. Something I really hate with the NHL.
It'd be fun if we can extend this into a long series
Andy in Halifax : 4/16/2015 1:23 pm : link
Losing Stone would hurt, he's been our leader and best player during this run. Could end up being a classic series if Ottawa can get game 2 and make it competitive.
.
arcarsenal : 4/16/2015 1:27 pm : link
From someone with no dog in the fight, I think this is going to be a looooong, awesome series. I think it'll be the best one in he EC this round.
Montreal
pjcas18 : 4/16/2015 1:38 pm : link
lucked out as the 2nd seed in the east to play the hottest team in the NHL.

Ottawa went 21-3-3 since mid-February. Hammond was 20-1-2 in that time.

And MTL was without their best player and penalty killer and it was evident last night.

Ottawa was 2 for 5 on the PP last night and it almost was the downfall for Montreal.

OTT had 2 PP goals and a MTL own goal for their 3 goals.
Yeah, Ottawa's PP is dreadful.
Andy in Halifax : 4/16/2015 1:49 pm : link
Montreal needs to correct a few things there as they were caught over pursuing and losing guys near the net a few times last night. That could/should bite them in the ass if not corrected.

Of course, opening night of the playoffs against a heated rival, players are bound to lose their position once in a while - they are a pretty decent PKing team so I assume they will correct a few things and improve as the series moves on.

Hopefully, opening night jitters explains a few poor performances from Ottawa too - Ceci, in particular, was dreadful. Responsible for 3 of the goals against last night with miscues.

Was Ceci the defenseman who let Flynn walk out of the corner on the game winning goal?

the center (Pageau?) was very hesitant to play Flynn and should have, I couldn't see what defenseman it was though who got beat.
Yeah, Ceci lost his man on the GWG in the corner
Andy in Halifax : 4/16/2015 2:10 pm : link
also lost his man in the corner on the first goal and coughed up the puck at the blueline on the SHG.

He's usually really solid - for a team with a really thin blueline we can't have our #3 shit the bed like that.

That's not meant to take away credit from the 4th line of Montreal - they were fantastic. Extremely impressive.

What the fuck is overrated then, cliff-hanging fuck?
I meant to say puck possession
Deej : 4/17/2015 10:11 am : link
is getting overrated, in reference to the DET-TB game (which I missed). My jumping off point was some post on HF Boards about that TB really won the game because of puck possession, except they lost because of the score. It was bizarre. But then I couldnt find the post.

My head isnt on straight today.
I know it's still a bit away
feelflows : 4/17/2015 10:14 am : link
but holy crap.. if the Isles and Rangers play like they did in game 1, this board can get very intense in a couple of weeks lol
Oh, HFBoards is terrible
Deej : 4/17/2015 10:17 am : link
It's just a vice I cant quit. Havent posted there in years, but Im a consistent lurker. Reading the Habs fans bitching about Kreider-Price is like my Fox News of sports -- I get more pleasure out of being pissed off reading that than I do reading Rangers-side stuff.

Occasionally I feel a strong urge to post something, but Im always able to resist. I really wanted to post in the Habs-Sens game thread comparing the Subban slash to the Kreider "run" on Price.
....
BrettNYG10 : 4/17/2015 10:26 am : link
I totally agree on puck possession. It's interesting, but Corsi is agnostic to shot quality.
.
arcarsenal : 4/17/2015 10:33 am : link
I believe LA had the highest CF% this year and they're not even in the playoffs.

Corsi gives me a good indication of how a game I wasn't able to watch went. It's a good reference but I've never put a whole lot of stock in it because of the fact that shot quality has no variable weight in its equation.
Once they sort out the shot quality issue, like Brett said,
Andy in Halifax : 4/17/2015 10:40 am : link
Corsi will be a really great stat.
War on Ice has been working on one, I think.
BrettNYG10 : 4/17/2015 10:43 am : link
Nothing will ever replace watching the games, but they definitely help you think a bit differently. I enjoy the advanced stats, but can't stand when they're used out of context or as the end-all, as Deej said.
Here we go
Fish : 4/17/2015 10:46 am : link
with the Corsi shit again.
Subban slash
pjcas18 : 4/17/2015 10:48 am : link
and Kreider collision are not remotely similar.

Subban tomahawked Stone. He can argue intent I guess, maybe say he was trying to hit the stick of Stone or something, but he didn't he accepts his penalty as the right call.
Remember that time Fish contributed to a conversation?
BrettNYG10 : 4/17/2015 10:48 am : link
Me neither.

Islanders aren't getting enough credit for playing a sound defensive game the other night. Mostly reading people shitting on Washington.

I'm really looking forward to the OTT/MTL game. Hope it goes 7.

Preds are cooked if they don't win tonight, IMO.
I'm disappointed the Islanders Caps series is the same time
