NFT: Knicks and wolves both about to lose

djm : 4/15/2015 10:17 pm
Knicks will finish with the second worst record.

It could be worse. I think they can't pick any worse than 5th. Hopefully they pick top 4. I guess it's a 4 player draft but I believe many feel it's a 5 player draft?

We'd all sign up for this high of a pick so let's hope it works out in the end... This long terrible year is finally over. At least they got a high pick out of it.

The Knicks need to get lucky when they pick more than getting lucky with the lottery. Towns is probably the clear cut #1 but really we don't know which player ends up truly special. It could be mudiay for all we know. It could be Okafor. Even Russell or some other kid... Who knows. Knicks just need to scout the shit out of everyone and make the best pick. Be it #1 or 5.

Only the first 3 picks are chosen by lottery. After that it's ordered by record (inverse order obviously).
I started counting down the games

back in November. Thank God it's finally over. Odds are we get a top four pick - I'll take my chances with any of the guys at the top of the board. Go earn your money now, Phil. It's a clean slate for him as far as I'm concerned.
so if the twolvs

win the lottery, then the worse Knicks can do would be 4th pick?
I'm fine with pick 1-3
AnotherGiantsFan : 4/15/2015 10:32 pm : link
It's highly unlikely we get anything lower than 3. I can finally rest easy as a Knicks fan. We tanked well.

I hope Phil knows what he's doing. He has no excuses this draft/offseason. I'm not looking for a title contender this upcoming year, but I want a team that is thoroughly enjoyable to watch with a bright future.

Also, I fear that D Fish is kind of a bad coach. Impossible to gauge based on this season, but I feel it in my bones. Here's to hoping it's just the arthritis.

Say the Knicks get the #2 overall pick. Karl Anthony-Towns goes #1.

Are the Knicks able to sign 2 max free agents? Looking at the free agent PGs and it looks extremely weak. If they are able to sign 2 max free agents does it make more sense to go after a big man & a PG or go after 2 big men?

To me it seems better to try and sign Marc Gasol & Greg Monroe then draft the PG they like best between Mudiay & Russell. Do you think it's better to try & sign Monroe & a max PG plus draft Okafor?
It's

That's correct. No matter who wins, 4th is the lowest pick they could get.

There is no max PG. And for all intents and purposes, there is no Marc Gasol. He's the prince of Memphis.

Names out of big men. I know people are saying him, Aldridge & Jordan aren't leaving, but anything can happen. Also isn't Goran Dragic a free agent? He's not going to get a max contract? Don't think he should, but I thought around the trade deadline that people were talking he would get a max contract.

Essentially asking is it better to try and sign 2 free agent big men & draft a PG if KAT is gone or is it better to sign a PG/SG & big man + draft Okafor?

The best thing the Knicks/fans could hope for
AnotherGiantsFan : 4/15/2015 11:02 pm : link
Is that Mudiay looks like the next coming of Jesus Christ in the draft process. This team could really use a guard, and there are several serviceable Centers in this FA crop.
slot percentages are
DaddyM89 : 4/15/2015 11:21 pm : link
1st 19.9%
2nd 18.8%
3rd 17.1%
4th 31.86%
5th 12.35%

So just under 39 percent of a top 2 pick. For me I want one of the big men, slightly leaning towards towns but would be happy with either one. 44% we draft 4th or 5th which would suck imo.
Congrats, Knicks fans (from a Sixers perspective)
BurberryManning : 4/15/2015 11:23 pm : link
I was really hoping for a coin-flip but your team was able to salvage the guaranteed spot in the top-5 after nearly snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. I tip my hat as I try to convince myself that it's actually a six player draft; the two internationals and Stanley Johnson have to add up to one legitimate prospect, right?

Now we can sit back, enjoy the actual playoffs, and prepare for the exciting part of our "season", namely the draft and free agency.

I hope
bceagle05 : 4/15/2015 11:32 pm : link
we draft first (obviously) or third so we can either take Towns or our choice of the guards. An Okafor/Monroe/Melo front court would be scary defensively - Phil's comments about defense lead me to believe Towns and Mudiay are the targets.
In other news
AnotherGiantsFan : 4/15/2015 11:37 pm : link
The T-Wolves are going to make such a quick turnaround if they get the #1 pick. Rubio, Wiggins, K-Mart, KAT, and Pek is a legitimate starting 5. KAT and Pek will co-exist just fine, unlike Pek and Okafor.
Let's not get carried away on this defense quote

I'm not complaining. Not to toot my own horn here (ok, it is), I'm probably the first guy on here that's been talking about wanting Monroe. I had a feeling he was going to turn down the QO and play out his contract, so I've been on the bandwagon for quite some time.

But us wanting him shows that defense isn't the end all be all to talent evaluation. Okafor is still definitely in play.
I think

Monroe's passing skills are what Phil likes the most about his game.

The Timberwolves have several players who were taken in the lottery. Garnett, Shabazz, Bennett, LaVine, Wiggins, Payne, Rubio. With the exception of Garnett, all of them are young and Bennett and Wiggins were first overall.

The Knicks only have Bargnani, Aldrich and Melo who were taken in the lottery and none of them have the youth of the lottery guys on the Wolves (excluding Garnett).

The Knicks need the first overall pick more than the Wolves do.
Mudiay makes alot of sense

Especially if Monroe is their FA target. He may be their choice at #2 if towns isn't there.

so the Knicks 'deserve' the #1 overall pick because the Timberwolves have a lottery pick from the 1996 draft? If that's not solid logic I don't know what is

but at least we will def be top 5.

Although looking back the #2 spot isnt so great. Here is where the 2 spot has ended up:

3
4
3
4
4
5
4
5
2
4

So no #1s and only stayed at 2 once (oddly enough this was the knicks pick that went to POR for aldridge). Kind of weird. On a positive note the lottery 2 seed has had good luck with PGs in case we go with Mudiay. Paul and Westbrook both went to teams who had the second worst record.
Yeah, top three is ok with me.

either Towns or Russell. I could live with Okafor but his poor defense scares me. I do not want another alleged star who puts up 20+ points a game but is on a perennial loser, like a Kevin Love, or Amare, and we ask ourselves why do the Knicks still suck when we have Okafor?
Amare..
Italianju : 4/16/2015 9:37 am : link
was a huge part of some pretty damn good PHX teams.

I really hope russell performs great in workouts cause right now i dont really want him. Id have him behind the top 3 and Winslow i think.

I think people need to chill on Okafor's defense.
BeerFridge : 4/16/2015 10:06 am : link
He's 19. He's not a finished product. Scouts questioned Marc Gasol's defense when he entered the league and he's one of the best defenders in the NBA. He'll probably never be an elite shot blocker but there's no reason to think he won't get better defensively as he is a very smart kid.

I do think part of it was he was a big portion of their offense, so i am sure he was told be careful not to pick up quick early fouls...

In College with only 5 fouls to give you do notice the bigger scorers do not play aggressive defensively...

Now the slow feet on the pick and roll and slow to react are red flags...
on one hand...
Italianju : 4/16/2015 10:16 am : link
i def agree that people need to chill a bit on his D. You would think he was going to be the worst defender in the history of the league. That said i think an average defender is probably close to his ceiling just cause he does seem to have slow feet and poor lateral movement.
we just don't know what is in Okafor's heart
djm : 4/16/2015 10:33 am : link
or how bad he wants to be the best big man in the NBA. Just like we didn't know about guys before hand. All we know is he's got good size and good moves down low--that's typically enough to get you drafted pretty high.

Ewing wasn't an offensive super star when he came out of Georgetown. His D was being compared to Bill Russell. As it turns out his NBA career ended up almost reverses from college. He went down as one of the best offensive big men in NBA history while his D, while good to great wasn't really his trademark skill in the NBA.

I feel that if Okafor wants to be one of the best he's got the size and skill set to get there. I'd still take Towns probably and maybe Mudiay if his workouts end up great...but Okafor is an intriguing prospect.
Yes, Gasol built himself into one of the best centers in the NBA
BeerFridge : 4/16/2015 10:41 am : link
We don't know if Okafor will do that. But I'd happily take him at 2 and hope you can coax the defense out of the kid.

Dont know much about these guys
Headhunter : 4/16/2015 11:05 am : link
but the 1 thing I've learned over the years is that a college player plays in a system that may not be a true indication of what he will do on the professional level. The only think you get from watching college is an idea of their talent level but you dont know in most cases how it transfers to pro ball
the only thing
Headhunter : 4/16/2015 11:05 am : link
.
There are worse
EricNY33 : 4/16/2015 11:09 am : link
players you can draft than a center who will probably be a 20 point scorer for the bulk of his career. I just hate drafting a center who isn't a good defensive player. That being said... I don't know him. I don't know his work ethic. I don't know how motivated he is to become a great player. THAT's where the GM's and scouts make their money.

I happen to think it's really a 3 player draft. I am not as sold on Winslow as most nor am I a big believer in D'Angelo Russell. I think the two European kids could both be special players but it's always scary drafting a Euro because there are more variables with them. You have the same concerns as the college kids but you also have to deal with them moving to a new country and adapting to a new culture. That might be a bigger issue than what they do on the court.

Right now, for me, it's Towns, Mudiay, and Okafor in that order. Anyone else would be considered a slight disappointment.
